Ted Koppel on Rather Suit: Squeezing Out of Newsman was a ‘Travesty’
TVWeek.com ^ | 9/24/07 | Chuck Ross

Posted on 09/24/2007 8:20:26 PM PDT by LdSentinal

Calling the ouster of Dan Rather from CBS News in 2006 a “travesty,” newsman Ted Koppel said today that he hopes the $70 million suit filed by Mr. Rather against CBS and Viacom will bring Mr. Rather “relief from his [emotional] pain.”

Mr. Koppel said he “hurt” for Mr. Rather, whom he characterized as a friend. Addressing the “60 Minutes” report about President George Bush’s National Guard service that preceded Mr. Rather’s departure from CBS, Mr. Koppel said the story was “much more correct than incorrect.” Mr. Koppel said that those responsible for the incorrect parts of the report deserved to be chastised and punished.

It is a “travesty” that “Dan Rather was squeezed out” with such little class from CBS News, Mr. Koppel said today at a forum at Fordham University in New York City that was put on by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences.

The academy tonight presents its annual News and Documentary Emmys. During this evening’s ceremony, Mr. Koppel, the former ABC “Nightline” newscaster who now works for Discovery Communications, is scheduled to be honored with a Lifetime Achievement award from NATAS.

Mr. Koppel also spoke about the difficulties that network news departments face as parts of media conglomerates. Speaking of his former employer, he said, “ABC News is a pimple on the elephant’s behind”—the elephant being ABC parent Walt Disney Co.

Explaining the remark later to TelevisionWeek, Mr. Koppel said he first realized how small ABC News was in relation to Disney as a whole some years ago when he was flipping through the annual report and saw that he was many, many pages into it before ABC News received a mention.

The dilemma stems from the fact that the media giants are primarily entertainment companies and thus have to make money, Mr. Koppel said. He cited the birth of “60 Minutes” on CBS in 1968 as a watershed moment that became a double-edged sword: It was a serious news product that was embraced by viewers, which was good. Unfortunately, it also made a lot of money and proved to the owners of the broadcast networks that a news division could be—and in their view should be—profitable.

Well, Koppel's got a point there -- would have showed a lot more class to just drop-kick the lying sack of shiite through the window -- after closing it.

LOL, no surprise that that scumbag Koppel sticks up for the disgraced Rather. I’ll never forget when Koppel, in response to the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, went to Vietnam to check up on Kerry’s medals by “interviewing” villagers who “remembered” Kerry from 1967. Naturally, Koppel concluded that Kerry was a bona fide war hero. Koppel was pathetic.

Koppel and Rather are peas from the same sickening pod.

my mother and i went to see Bush at an oyster roast at Boone Hall Plantation in Mt Pleasant, SC during his campaign

after Carrol Cambell, his wife Iris, Gov Edwards and his wife and me and my mom walked single file through the dark tents to get to the oysters and bypass the hords trying to shake Bush’s hand we 6 found the oysters and started to wolf all the oysters down we could eat

after 10 minutes of us eating our oysters in walked Ted Koppel

I noticed his shrimp frame and commented “look there is Ted Koppel”

that was the only comment we all said nothing more(Carrol(a friend of mine) and Gov. Edwards said nothing) and continued to eat our oysters

what garbage we thought he was

My Gawd this really is the gift that just keeps on giving.

They are so arrogant they think they can simply stand their ground, close ranks and transform a lie into the truth.

Maybe if they hold their mouths just right, and stand in just the right spot, and click their magic commie red slippers together at just the right frequency, they will magically be transported home to 1973, where they have total control over the media and can not be held to account by anyone.

But then again, Kenneth never really knew what the frequency was, did he?

It’s the old “fake but accurate” angle. So Ted Koppel is another nutter.

It’s just stunning that “news people” would claim that a conclusion based on a bogus piece of evidence somehow proves their thesis.

Sheesh!

“much more correct than incorrect.”

Lies often "wear the clothes" of the truth. Lies will contain a sufficient amount of truth to fool those their perpetrators are trying to beguile.

Lies, of course, attempt to pivot not on the truth, but on their "incorrect" parts.

Thanks Howdy, you've been helpful in pointing to the Rather incorrect aspects of GungaDan's complaint.

Mr. Koppel said the story was “much more correct than incorrect.” Mr. Koppel said that those responsible for the incorrect parts of the report deserved to be chastised and punished.

Well, I've always wondered about that. Whatever happened to Bill Burkett, CBS's sole source for the story? Mary Mapes had visited him at his Texas home, and he faxed in the disputed memos to CBS between 3 & 4 am from a Kinkos in Abilene, some 15 miles from his home.

Can't CBS just solve this whole thing by persuading Burkett to produce the originals?

Oh, I forgot, Burkett has had two tours of duty in mentals wards prior to his late night faxing, and he's the bat in CBS belfry that nobody wants to talk about.

CBS went with faxed memos from a person that a Google search could have told them was a loon. It's the old thing about believing what you want to believe. And Burkett and his 'original' copies have mysteriously disappeared. But he was the key to the whole thing...

I remember this. Koppel is a fool if he thinks that anyone would remember an American naval Lt. forty years later.one who had an abbreviated tour, and left because he knew how to get out of an un pleasant situation. Of course the communist government is going to cover for a “fiend”. It was he who helped persuade the country to abandon the South Vietnamese government.

Ted Koppel's years in journalism appear to have taught him nothing about the concepts of 'falsified evidence' and 'absence of proof' (we already knew that about Dan Rather).

And now Koppel works for the Discovery Channel...

Here’s the good news: Hillary will not be elected President of the United States, ever. Not in a million years. When Americans walk into their polling places in November 2008 - - when it is time to cast their votes for real - - they will not be able to vote for Hillary Clinton.

I predict the biggest GOP Presidential landslide in history.
