The Syrian really commited pilot error.....messing with the Israeli air defenses. The Golan will be littered with Syrian planes if they keep this up.

Well, I started reading it, and it said that a Syrian plane had violently launched into the air, from a hole in the ground in Golan. Then I remembered to read it from right to left, and it made more sense.:P

Coulda been probing the Israeli air defenses. Or trying to get payback for the raid the other week. I think the Syrian mistake is in thinking that just because they’re systems don’t work, that the Israeli system don’t work either.

“The source did not reveal the circumstances and causes of the crash.”

Mr. Falcon, meet Mr. Sidewinder. Mr. Sidewinder, meet Mr. Falcon.

Of course, its also possible that the Syrian pilot simply ran out of time and airspace simultaneously, independent of Mr. Sidewinder. Syrian pilots are not exactly the sharpest knives in the drawer.

Or a Patriot, Hawk, or other Israeli SAM. I'd imagine the Golan is well supplied with SAMs.

More likely,

While the F-16 is a fine air combat fighter, the Israelis, as the US, use it primarily in the ground attack role. Witness the paint scheme on the F-16 you posted. Desert camo on top, to improve visual "stealth" from high flying fighters/interceptors, while it is down in the weeds (or the sand) supporting the ground forces.

The Soviet general that was in charge of Moscows air defenses cas removed.
I gotta believe that the Golan is better protected then Moscow was and is.

OTOH, the F-16 in your photo *is* equipped with Slammers, AIM-120s, which isn't just for "self defense".

I think the Syrian mistake is in thinking that just because they’re systems don’t work, that the Israeli system don’t work either.

The frightening part, at least to the Syrians and Iranians, is that the Syrian defenses stopped working when the IAF entered Syrian territory. I imagine that during the attack there was a large Israeli (or American) aircraft loitering near the Syrian border doing bad things to the Syrian electronics. Maybe even one flying near the Iraq/Syrian border too.

I never called it an F-16, I post the F-15 picture because they are far more likely to be used in the interceptor role, although with the short distances in that theater, the F-16 with Slammers works fine in that role as well.

The F-16 and F-15 are in some sense MY birds, although not in the interceptor role. I made a "significant contribution" to some of the mission equipment used in the interdiction and deep penetration roles.

There's not IF to it.

"Notice how far away Dayr az-Zawr is from Israel. An F15/16 attack there is not a tiptoe across the border, but a deep, deep penetration of Syrian airspace. And guess what happened with the Russian super-hyper-sophisticated cutting edge antiaircraft missile batteries when that penetration took place on September 6th.

Nothing.

El blanko. Silence. The systems didn’t even light up, gave no indication whatever of any detection of enemy aircraft invading Syrian airspace, zip, zero, nada. The Israelis (with a little techie assistance from us) blinded the Russkie antiaircraft systems so completely the Syrians didn’t even know they were blinded.

Now you see why the Syrians have been scared speechless. They thought they were protected - at enormous expense - only to discover they are defenseless. As in naked.

Thus the Great Iranian Freak-Out - for this means Iran is just as nakedly defenseless as Syria. I can tell you that there are a lot of folks in the Kirya (IDF headquarters in Tel Aviv) and the Pentagon right now who are really enjoying the mullahs’ predicament. Let’s face it: scaring the terror masters in Tehran out of their wits is fun."

Well, actually, I thought they violated Turkish airspace. That means they went the long way around. Also, the Syrians might have not been expecting them to come from that direction. So, I’ll stick with the “IF”.

Bottom line: until there is an official story, we don’t know what happened. It is mostly rumor and speculation at this point. But that can be fun too...

Actually, we do know what took place...it’s not speculation in the least. Dr. Wheeler wrote an article on it...Wheeler is the author of the Reagan Doctrine and continues to have insider info especially in the Pentagon. That’s a piece from his article.
