doing a search here under keyword AlMasri it looks like we’ve killed a few Al-Masris over the last few months, but this seems to be a new one
Well, it was only right that we should kill some more; after all, we know that Masri loves company.
FYI: ‘Al Masri’ at the end of an arabic name is not a personal identifier, it is a geographic identifier.
It’ like saying ‘John Doe of Mansfield’...or, ‘of Masri’.
Like ‘Mohamad Izzadine Al Dhouri’ means Mohammed Izzadine of
(the Province of) Dhouri.
Calling him Al Dhouri for short, is like calling Dennis Kucinich “Mr. of Cleveland”.
” Today, Mr. Of Cleveland was reported saying in Syria...”
As I understand it, “Al Masri” means “the Egyptian”.
A lot of the more senior AQ types have come out of the Egyptian radical movement, along with Zarqawi, the plotters of the 1993 WTC bombing, their holy man the blind shiekh, Mohammed Atta, etc. They seem to get much of their best talent there, which isn’t surprising.
AQ types seem to refer to each other by their origins a lot. I suppose it would be typical for them to use their nom-de-guerre + “al Masri”.
