KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) -- Taliban fighters carrying machine guns and rocket-propelled grenades used children as human shields during a battle in southern Afghanistan on Wednesday, forcing U.S.-led coalition soldiers to hold their fire for a time, the coalition said.
The clash in Uruzgan province began when more than 20 insurgents attacked a joint Afghan and coalition patrol, the coalition said in a statement.
As aircraft prepared to bomb the site, "coalition forces as well as the aircraft identified several insurgents in one compound using children as human shields," the statement said. Ground troops and the aircraft withheld fire to avoid injuring the children, it said.
The soldiers did fight the insurgents when they tried to flee the compound, and more than a dozen suspected militants were killed, the coalition said. The report, which was impossible to verify independently, did not list any casualties among troops or civilians.
Maj. Chris Belcher, a coalition spokesman, said Taliban militants have used children as shields before. In June, insurgents forced women and children into a canal in Uruzgan while battling coalition forces, and many of the human shields died in the crossfire, he said.
"If you look at some of the actions where the Taliban have had women and children carrying ammunition for them, where they've used civilian houses, and now in this case they're using children to shield themselves, I'd say that shows they really don't care about Afghans," Belcher said.
The U.S.-led coalition and the NATO force in Afghanistan themselves were strongly criticized earlier in the year by President Hamid Karzai and others for causing civilian casualties in airstrikes on suspected militant locations. The number of such casualties has dropped recently.

Frankly, I've seen little benefit from our overly long and expensive in blood and treasure pursuit of the "world's respect"..
Consequently, I am no longer interested in the respect of the world or how much I "outrage" the perpetually outraged as much as I'm devoted and interested in survival of the Republic, our Western Civilization and my family and friends.
By now, we KNOW who our friends are..
They are the nations who share our love of civilization and individual freedom..
Many of them are standing with us on the battlefield...

Have you seen the U.N. or the "World" recoil in horror at the 9/11 attack, the Chechen massacre at the Russian school, the frequent beheading of hostages, the assassination of foreign leaders who oppose the Islamanazi assault of their neighbors, threats of genocide frequently made by Islamanazis against Israel and that great Satan - America?
War was declared against us, and the enemy is conducting that war through the terrorist activity of ideologues -- with the Nations supporting them attempting to remain off our target list...

We will lose the fight if we don't make the price of Jihad an unbearable nightmare which threatens to hurl their "civilization" back to its 7th century base...
We need to win this war, by the total and absolute defeat and devastation of the enemy.

I also have no doubt that the impotent and corrupt U.N. and the "world" will quietly and diplomatically "protest" -- but tread carefully so as to not enrage the victor whom they fear..
Personally, I would rather be alive and feared - than dead and "respected" by those I hold in contempt...

That really disturbs me - fearing that the naive fools and cowards in this country are going to lose this war without a fight which UTILIZES OUR STRENGTHS...

Sorry but I think world respect is important. Germany and France have elected polar opposites to previous Arafat-loving regimes. The Muslims are doing a terrific PR hatchet job on themselves in Europe. France has started expelling them. Yes, the UN is full of crap but at least the Security Council is no longer on the take from Saddam. Palestinians have lost the “pity” they once enjoyed.
Islamic fighters have never once defeated our soldiers in a skirmish.
Overall, democracy is on the march and global capital is growing at the fastest rate ever. There are reasons to be cheerful instead of fearful. Your granddaughters will never submit to sharia.
