Percy Priest Elementary in Forrest Hills was placed on lockdown Wednesday after an intruder entered the school.

The man, 43-year-old Michael Street, was first spotted in the school yard and then pushed his way into the south Nashville school.

After about 45 minutes, Metro Police managed to subdue Street and he was taken into custody.

Parent Michelle Evans was volunteering at the school when Street pushed his way inside.

“I heard a call come into the office that said, ‘Second grade… Call the police.’ I had a second grader and so I went to one of the doors to see what was going on…...

...They were trying to get the kids inside. I saw this man who just pushed himself in. There were a couple of male teachers trying to subdue the man and they couldn’t, he just pushed his way in,” Evans told News 2.

Police said one teacher in particular is credited with keeping the intruder at bay, away from the students.

Metro Police spokesperson Don Aaron said, “Music teacher James Mott did an absolutely tremendous job keeping him away from the kids… Mr. Mott deserves a tremendous amount of credit here.”

Street faces numerous charges Wednesday night.

Percy Priest Elementary islocated on Otter Creek Road in Forrest Hills, just south of Nashville.

My oldest boy went here last year and I live about 700 yards away. This is an area surrounded by fancy homes and middle and upper middle class folks.

Why this guy decided to come out there is a mystery.

Mr Mott deserves a hand. This is a tough crowd on "arty" men and Mr Mott sure proved his mettle.

I salute him

In the old days of the South, even ‘arty’ men could have dealt some finality to this situation: http://www.dixiegunworks.com/images/BO1934.jpg

Good on Mr. Mott. He did what he could under the circumstances.

I can see reluctance to shooting him in an elementary school, but don't the cops there have Tasers or batons?

Perhaps some people should reconsider. Music and Art teachers are being pruned so that Davidson County can hire more Spanish speaking ESL teachers.

Did you read the story on "The Tennessean" site? Said the guy was lighting a crack pipe, asking to be shot, kicking cars, etc.

Is Representative Briley out on bail?

Well put.

Bravo, Mr. Mott! May God bless you.

so that Davidson County can hire more Spanish speaking ESL teachers...

At my son's (former) elementary school (he's being homeschooled this year), they eliminated Spanish for Chinese. I kid you not. When my wife and I asked questions/objected, we were told the money for the Chinese instruction was from a private, confidential grant.

Paging Dr. Wang?

Those were my first thoughts. Good on Mr. Mott. I hope to God more schools have men like him if trouble begins.

I wouldn’t complain. Learn Spanish to supervise the workers. Learn Chinese to manage the company. Besides, Spanish is not a difficult language to learn.

Chinese and Arabic are important second languages for the defense of our country and business in general.

I wasn't complaining about Spanish instruction; it's increasingly necessary. I don't see the need or desirability of my son learning Chinese, however.

First, at second grade level I doubt they would learn anything except how to say "hello" in Mandarin and look at some pics of cute Chinese kids (in other words, just propaganda about how wonderful the People's Republic is). Second, I prefer to boycott Chinese stuff, not have my son force-fed their language and "culture."
