While the state Capitol remains under a "Yellow Alert," watching and waiting for ten Democrats to take a stand one way or another on Andy Dillon's $1.2 billion tax hike scheme there are reminders of the stakes all over the state.
The sheer insanity of a massive tax hike sans a single penny's worth of reforms is reinforced by the updated numbers coming out of the housing market. Michigan now ranks sixth worst nationally in terms of home foreclosures.
Not a nice number. But the pain and the trouble in that figure really jumps out at you when you dig a little deeper. Not only are there now nearly 16,000 properties sitting on the market in one stage or another of foreclosure, that breaks out to a jump of 11% over the month of July and a staggering 126% leap from this time a year ago.
A one-hundred-twenty-six percent increase in foreclosures since the heat of the last campaign year.
Talk about trending in the wrong direction. Not that we didn't see the writing on the wall last fall. Those of us who didn't cover our eyes and pretend the state's problems were just going to go away, anyways.
Read on . . .
And the foreclosure rate doesn't tell the whole story. When you add 16,000 properties to the housing market at bargain basement prices you're going to depress that housing market. And when that market is already depressed? Well, home prices plummet. Nowhere has that been more painful than in metro Detroit and Wayne County.

This is astonishing. And things show no sign of getting better there.
Pass your own tax hike again, Michigan! Please.
We’re looking forward to gaining more jobs down here in Alabama as reality slaps more people in the face...hard enough to wake them up from their “we’ll never leave Michigan” coma.
hey, got that Michigan ping ready?
On monday i heard on the radio that if businesses with tax deferments do not lean on the republicans to pass the tax increase, that granholm is ready to yank those tax incentives.....militant government, militant workforce, and tax and spenders in the house, all the while the average household income has fallen..........time to get the canadian socialist feminazi out of the governors chair!
Speaking from experience, Michigan is a difficult State to leave. It’s government is simply working on making it easier.
If Michigan could only vote Wayne County out of the state, most of these problems could be solved.
add me to the michigan ping list........
I met a Michigan refugee recently. They picked up and left.
His wife found a health care job instantly and he found one to keep him busy while he was finding something he reallly liked.
They sold their house in Grand Rapids and hit the trail. They liked the looks of East Tennessee and stopped. He was very scared of the change but seemed very glad to be gone.
Who is John Galt?

Michigan has great fishing, hunting, boating, and scenery...but so does Zimbabwe.
There comes a time when the little guy has to leave.
of course its difficult. its hard to leave when its impossible to sell your house. for anyone that owes more than about 70% of value, you’re a captive audience.
does this mean Texas will get another car factory?
What incentive is there for the Michigan politicians to do anything? No matter how good or how bad they are, they still get their paychecks. Nothing they do, impacts them personally. You can get layed off, you can loose your car, you can loose your home, you can loose your’s and your families health coverage, you can loose everything.........they don’t loose a thing. Until budgets and taxes are tied to politicians salarys, there will be not changes for the good of the people.

I was speaking of all the fun I had in Michigan when I lived there, but I know what you mean.
Michigan is a prime example of what will happen to the US if the democrats impliments their agenda at the federal level.
i love winters here. not too harsh, lotsa snow, and its so much fun playing with the kids on their sleds and toboggans, making snowmen and snow angels, snowball fights, etc.
and the hunting is good too. :)
I got a better idea....we got the headlee amendment passed with a ballot proposal, and bypassed the government...maybe it is time to do the same thing with income and sales taxes...no increases unless it is voted on and approved by the voters, and take that power right out of the politicians hands.....
Screw Alabama, Southack! Indiana is a much shorter drive and Honda and Toyota are moving to Indiana. Bring all your Auto Manufacturing a little south.
(No had feelings)
Where do I sign the petition!!

It's not too late to throw together a freep at the Capitol, folks. Free parking and refreshments at my house.
Anyone else getting tired of hearing the phrase "revenue increase"???
I have a good friend whose mother lives in Michigan and she finally sold her house but at way below what she wanted for it. It didn’t sell for many a moon but it finally did. She needed to go into a smaller apartment because her husband had a serious stroke and was in a nursing home. She could no longer afford the house so it was a tough choice. I’m thankful she sold it. Now, in our area, houses are being bought and sold pretty regularly. Of course, it’s a college town and that could be the difference. They go for big prices, too.
If you have one, we should combine them.
Why would anyone live in Mich.? You can’t go jetskiing in the winter up there.....
Every elitist lefty has said those of us who voted for Bush in ‘04 are downright stupid. Can we say the same of anyone who voted to reelect Granholm even though her state is going down the drain?? I am guessing if a conservative said that in MI they would be called an extremist and hate monger.
Here in NW Indiana things appear much like Michigan. A steel industry that has dried up, high crime in places like Gary and Hammond. This area could be a manufacturers mecca. There is a decent workforce, rail availability, a respectable airport and unused buildings begging to be utilized but yet the area remains essentially dead.
The sheer insanity of a massive tax hike sans a single penny's worth of reforms is reinforced by the updated numbers coming out of the housing market.Last year at this time there were about 10,000 unsold homes in Grand Rapids. Judging by the signs along this street, there are a bunch more now. The only advantage to this (and this is definitely not a silver lining per se) is that lenders are eager to lend more money to reliable borrowers and give them good rates, because the large number of foreclosures and unsold homes means more loans have to be written, and fast, to keep the banks solvent. Thanks Grellis.
At my age, jet skiing is the farthest thing from my mind. It has been my home for my entire life. I was not born a nomad and don't intend to leave during my twilight years. LOL. Thank God I don't live anywhere near Detroit but it is waaay too close for me and getting closer with the Muslim population. I am filled to capacity the State's support of Detroit's corrupt government via subsidities. The City of Detroit just keeps electing them. Hopefully, with those rushing to leave the state we will be able to elect a Republican to the Capitol in the future.
Maybe a recall petition against the governor and the legislators would send a message. If it didn’t, at least we’d be rid of the ‘holes.
A little south — but still connected to union mentality.
Toyota, Honda, others making super profits in Alabama without unions, offering workers incentives for improving to next level up the scale. Workers there not abut to vote a union in. I’m not too sure that can be said about Indiana...
The problem is that these blue-staters who are in mass exodus to the South bring their politics with them. They don’t learn their lesson from having turned their previous home into a hellhole. I am afraid that the conservative stronghold here in the South is being slowly chipped away at by liberal Yankee expatriates.
Except that there will be no place left to run.
Same here. My new neighbor used to be a Ford engineer.
Now drives a bus at Disney.
and the libs wondered why we wanted DeVos as Gov.
I left in 1979 and it was easy. I loaded up all of my belongings into the back of my pickup truck, filled up the gas tank and crossed into Wisconsin.
What’s this “winter” you speak of?
I was up there yesterday, reminding Mike Simpson that if he votes for a tax increase that he’ll be recalled.
It was just me and my big yellow sign, but a couple of reporters approached me. Everyone who passed was supportive, and all are incredibly digusted with our legislature.
I loaded mine into a U-Haul, took one last walk around the farm, and cried.
Some crazies try it, I'm sure, but Lake Superior tends a big on the chilly side in January and you'd need an icebreaker.
We can go outside in August, though. ;-)
I grew up in Michigan, and still have my parents, brother, and friends there. I love to visit, and really wish we lived closer together. However, my husband and I made the decision back in the late 80’s that the Michigan economy was just too risky for us to bet on. We stayed in SE Pennsylvania, which has its issues, but on the whole is a good place for us to raise our boys. It makes me very sad to see what has happened to the Michigan I always loved. Beautiful state, kind people.

Look or Michigan to be sold on EBay very soon. /sarcasm
Michigan's fishing and hunting is mediocre, at best. It is either flat or a swamp in most of the lower penninsula where most people live. It's hunting regs are archaic. It's raising fees across the board. And while there are a large number of incredible hunters here, the hunting ethics of the majority of the general hunting population I've interacted with are appalling.
“You can get layed off, you can loose your car, you can loose your home, you can loose yours and your families health coverage, you can loose everything.........they dont loose a thing.”
Because the residents will continue to vote in the theiving pols! For some reason the citizens keep figuring that the people breaking the state can fix the state. Idiot electorate is the root cause of the problem. (Present company excluded, of course!)
“Maybe a recall petition against the governor and the legislators would send a message.”
And better yet, have those recalls coincide with the 2008 general elections.
yes you can, you just have to dress a little warmer......
We don't want em. We have enough ILLEGALS already.
