Good grief. What’s going on over there? Is it normal to have so much activity like this in such a short period of time?

The area is a very active seismic zone but it is unusual to have this many major quakes in this short a period of time.

I’ll never forget that picture from a few years back of all those dead, bloated bodies as far as the eye could see. Nearly 1/4 million people died from that event if I recall correctly.

If I lived there I would be absolutely terrified right about now.

I live in Southern California too and went through the Northridge quake.

The term "aftershock" is not scientifically significant other than it describes an earthquake which occurs after another earthquake nearby.

Basically the movement of earth's plates is what causes an earthquake. Several earthquakes occuring in a certain period of time simply means that the plates are continuing to move.

The 8.4 quake earlier today was 30 km deep, and both the 7.9 quake, and this 7.1 quake are both 10 km deep. All three are considered shallow. The damage is usually much greater during shallow quakes.

Earthquake triggers tsunami alert in western Indonesia
13 Sep, 2007

PADANG: A powerful earthquake shook western Indonesia for the second straight day Thursday, collapsing buildings in a coastal city and triggering tsunami alerts around the region. The jolt could also be felt in neighboring Singapore, causing high-rises to sway.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii warned the new 7.8-magnitude quake had the potential to generate destructive waves within 1,000 kilometers (600 miles) of the epicenter. It advised authorities to take immediate action to evacuate coastal areas.

The tremor was centered 185 kilometers (115 miles) southeast of Padang in Sumatra, the island ravaged by the 2004 tsunami disaster that killed an estimated 230,000 people in a dozen nations, the U.S. Geological Survey said. It had a depth of just 10 kilometers (six miles) and triggered at least one strong aftershock, measuring magnitude 6.8.

Thousands of frightened people piled in trucks or sought shelter on higher ground.

ooops...don't sound too good, bd.

Oh, I got the names confused. It was the San Fernando quake in 1971...by 1994, I was in CO and missed that one. But, in 1992, there was a good one out in the desert, where I lived at the time. That one, I think, was in Desert Hot Springs area.

Second Earthquake Hits Indonesia []

9/13/2007 12:46:02 AM For the second straight day, a powerful earthquake rocked western Indonesia on Thursday, collapsing buildings and triggering tsunami alerts throughout the region.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii warned that Thursday’s new 7.8-magnitude quake had the potential to generate destructive waves within 600 miles of the epicenter. It advised authorities to take immediate action to evacuate coastal areas in the entire Indian Ocean area, including Indonesia, India, Sri Lanka, Thailand and the Maldives

The tremor was centered 115 miles southeast of Padang in Sumatra, the island ravaged by the 2004 tsunami disaster that killed an estimated 230,000 people in a dozen nations. The quake had a depth of just six miles and triggered at least one strong aftershock that measured magnitude 6.8.

A total of 141,000 people in the Sumatran towns of Curup and Sungaipenuh were exposed to Thursday’s quake, and the city of Padang was hit by a 3-meter tsunami.

That same area was rocked by another massive quake hours earlier that registered 8.4 in magnitude. At least 10 people have died in the quakes and dozens more have been injured., and nations as far away as Africa put coastal areas on alert.

People I know who lived here during the 1971 quake said that the 71 quake was far worse than the 1994 Northridge quake. The Northridge quake was bad enough.

The Kern County quake was very big.

Historic Earthquakes

Kern County, California
1952 07 21 11:52:14 UTC
Magnitude 7.3
Fatalities: 12

This earthquake was the largest in the conterminous United States since the San Francisco shock of 1906. It claimed 12 lives and caused property damage estimated at $60 million.

...Property damage was heavy in Tehachapi, where both brick and adobe buildings were hit hard, and 9 people were killed. Three people were killed in other towns.

Although damage was severe, the total extent of damage to property did not exceed that in Long Beach in 1933. Only a few wood-frame structures were damaged seriously in this earthquake, compared to the 1933 shock in which many such structures were thrown off foundations.
