No, the Lt. Gov, when he was treasurer, allegedly submitted invoices for bookshelves..

Each bookshelf was priced at $8,500.00 each.

By submitting individual invoices, the scheme would fall below the $10,000.00 maximum which would require competitive bidding..

It is when it involves Federal Funds. The bookcases weren't even close to being worth $8,500. But because they were invoiced seperately, the Department of Education was sole sourced and charged for each one at an inflated amount.

By the way, there are no property taxes in American Samoa. So the entire Education Budget is based on Federal Funds alone. About 1/3 of Educational budgets in the states.

Thanks for the link. Unfortunately the posted copyright restricted Seattle Times article included different wording than the article you linked to the Seattle PI.

But you took out the cool mention of interagency cooperation between the Departments of Justice (FBI) and the Department of Transportation (Coast Guard C-130)..

The C-130, by the way, arrived from Hawaii Saturday morning, returning two prisoners to the Tafuna Correctional Facility in American Samoa. They had testified regarding the Warden's criminal beating case.

After landing, the FBI disembarked, but returned shortly thereafter with the Lieutenant Governor in tow..

American Samoa has a population of about 65,000. He may have the title Lt. Governor, but he is little more than the assistant to a small town mayor in reality. This is not a particularly notable event. Small town Democratic mayors get arrested all of the time.

Seriously, it is a very notable event..

With no Federal oversight, the FBI recently established a permanent office here.

Your tax dollars are being squandered, and the Federal Government is finally taking them to task.

By the way, American Samoa has more people than 65,000. Try in the neighborhood of 80,000.

Sure, it’s fine to post Seattle PI articles. Please include a working link and the correct source name for any published material you post.

Here’s a good and continually updated reference thread which lists Free Republic’s copyright rules. It’s good to keep it handy and refer to it prior to posting any published articles.

Looks like you didn't use the published title and another Mod changed what you had to the correct published title.

In the future, please just use the published title then put your comments into parentheses beside the published title. Original published titles help us reduce the number of duplicate threads.

What was the title you used? If there's room, I can add on your personal comments.
