Police in Israel have uncovered a neo-Nazi ring which was responsible for vandalising synagogues and carrying out attacks on Jews and foreign workers in Israel, a court was told yesterday.

The group of eight Russian immigrants aged between 18 and 21 appeared in court following an 18-month investigation into attacks on two synagogues in which swastikas were painted on the walls of the buildings. The men covered their heads with their shirts during the hearing, revealing arms tattooed with Nazi imagery.

More than a million people from the former Soviet Union have emigrated to Israel, which has a population of seven million, since 1990, taking advantage of Israel's Law of Return which allows anyone to claim citizenship if they have a Jewish grandparent. Many of the new immigrants have little connection to Judaism and emigrated for economic reasons.

Many Russians live in large communities in Israel's cities in which they have little interaction with other Israelis.

They have their own supermarkets where pork is available, unlike in the majority of stores. Russians feel they are victims of discrimination in Israel and many are denied the right to marry by the Jewish authorities. Police named the leader of the neo-Nazi gang as Eli Boanitov, 19, from Petah Tikvah, a city next to Tel Aviv.

Boanitov, who was known as "Eli the Nazi", told police: "I won't ever give up. I was a Nazi and I will stay a Nazi, until we kill them all I will not rest." In one conversation recorded by the police, Boanitov tells one of his fellow gang members: "My grandfather was a half-Jewboy. I will not have children so that this trash will not be born with even a tiny per cent of Jewboy blood.........

Maybe before long, the law will require that immigrant parents (at least one parent of each family) have a Jewish mother or conversion before becoming citizens. We'll see.

Weird! Looks like the "Law of Return" has a downside.

Not too surprising. The Law of Return was designed to get people to go to Israel and it was designed to cast a fairly wide net. It caught some losers in the process, which is what happens when you cast a wide net. If these folks were given citizenship, it may be very difficult to deport them after punishment. However, I point out that the reason for this is that Israel is a land under the rule of law, unlike most of the other states in the area.

Exactly. The Law Of Return should reflect Halakah. Only those born of a Jewish mother or who have converted to Judaism in accordance with Halakah should be eligible to immigrate to Israel.

That doesn't make him Jewish. The Jewish principle is Jewish identity is acquired through matrilineal descent. The other method is conversion to Judaism.

Due to the wide scope of the Law Of Return, a lot of gentiles immigrated to Israel because they had a Jewish ancestor. And that resulted in people settling in Israel who have no attachment to Judaism or love of the country. Hopefully this case will finally compel Israel's government to do what Orthodox groups have wanted for a long time: define immigration and citizenship in accordance with the Jewish Law, the Halakah.

When the Soviets finally decided to release those Jews who wished to emigrate to Israel, there was a rush to get faked Jewish Soviet passports by some of the Soviet Union's most undesirable characters ... many of whom, just like Fidel's Marielitos ... the authorities were very happy to be rid of..

The trade in illegal paperwork was centered around Odessa, then and now, a center of the Soviet Mafia. It is going to take the Israelis a generation, or two to straighten this out.

A "mamzer" by definition is the offspring of a married woman who has had a child with another man. This is religiously impossible to prove, since the offspring of a married woman is halachically assumed to be the child of her husband.

The child of an unmarried woman or a common-law-married couple is NOT considered a "mamzer" under Jewish law.

With the advances in DNA technology and the fact that most Jews, whether Sephardic or Azhkenazic, have a common ancestry deriving from Biblical Israel, genetic tests should be performed to see if those immigrants claiming Jewish ancestry have such a heritage. Given the aggressively secular character of the former USSR and the repression of religion and minority culture, plus intermarriage, many Russians of Jewish origin would naturally be indistinguishable in any respect from non-Jewish Russians.

A DNA test, although helpful, is not definite proof that a person is a Jew. For example, the genetic marker that identifies a “Cohen” (descendant of Aaron) has been found in non-Jews—proving only that at some point a “Cohen” intermarried and had non-Jewish descendants.

That's not true, civil marriage's are legally binding in Israel, they're simply not recognized by religious authorities, Jewish or otherwise.

The civil authorities ARE the religious (ultra-orthodox) authorities in matters of marriage and divorce. This monopolistic power was ceded to the ultra-orthodox by David Ben Gurion in exchange for their support of the division of Palestine. They had previously opposed the creation of a Jewish state.

I see the irony, but you seem to miss the fact that all of these teens were something like 10 when they came over (brought over by their parents.) It is highly unlikely they were neo-Nazis (or any other political affiliation at the time they came over). What probably happened is being totally alienated as immigrants (the adaptation is oftentimes hard even for ex-Soviet Jews who want to be a part of the Jewish identity) in a country or culture that they really felt no ties to - growing up, they eventually found a subculture (most likely through the internet) which allowed them to express their ultimate alienation.

Pretty much all the ex-Soviet immigrants in Israel are viewed collectively as "Russian" (unless they are Orthodox) regardless of their full, half or mixed Jewish parentage. I know the ex-Soviet "repatriant" circles rather well and there is some fear, as well as outrage, that this incident will stigmatize the rest of "Russians".
