Ron Paul Takes the Ribbon in State Fair's GOP Straw Poll (Maryland)
The Washington Post ^ | 9/9/07 | http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/related/topic/John+Wagner?tid=informline

Posted on 09/09/2007 10:40:15 AM PDT by LdSentinal

A curious thing happened this year at the Maryland Republican Party booth at the State Fair: A GOP presidential straw poll was won by Ron Paul, the idiosyncratic congressman from Texas who is a fierce critic of the Iraq war.

Perhaps just as curious was the Maryland GOP's decision to trumpet the results in a news release last week with the headline: "Maryland GOP Presidential Straw Poll Is a Big Success; Grassroots Candidate Wins Surprise Upset."

According to the release, Paul received 263 votes, and former New York mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani (for whom Republican former governor Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. is toiling) was second with 220 votes. (Ehrlich received three write-in votes.) Former Tennessee senator Fred Thompson-- who had yet to declare his candidacy -- finished third with 188 votes. No other candidate cracked 100 votes.

All told, nearly 1,000 people cast ballots in the Maryland GOP's first-ever presidential straw poll at the fair. The party said the straw poll was open to everyone of voting age, regardless of party affiliation, who stopped by the GOP booth.

The campaigns of nine GOP presidential candidates were invited to have representatives at the booth. It turns out only Paul had someone there all 11 days, the party said.

"The final vote showing Ron Paul won is a lesson for all campaigns of how grass-roots politics can make all the difference," said Chris Cavey, first vice chairman of the Maryland Republican Party and co-chairman of the party's State Fair Planning Committee.

"The Paul campaign repeatedly e-mailed their base of support to turn out at the State Fair to cast a vote for Dr. Paul, and in doing so, demonstrated that a small, organized operation can beat the odds."

RuPaul is polling less than 3% nationally and wins by 28%?

It’s pathetic how the RuPaulettes think that by FReeping a poll they somehow will change the hard and fast statistics of reality.

As a Maryland resident I can’t say I’ve not seen any RuPaul yard signs, bumper stickers or media promoting him. Though that’s anecdotal it reinforces this FReepers opinion the RuPaulettes are deluded and juvenile.

MR. WALLACE: So, Congressman Paul, and I’d like you to take 30 seconds to answer this, you’re basically saying that we should take our marching orders from al Qaeda? If they want us off the Arabian Peninsula, we should leave? (Laughter.)

REP. PAUL: No! (Cheers, applause.) I’m saying — (laughter) — I’m saying we should take our marching orders from our Constitution. We should not go to war — (cheers, applause) — we should not go to war without a declaration. We should not go to war when it’s an aggressive war. This is an aggressive invasion. We’ve committed the invasion of this war, and it’s illegal under international law. That’s where I take my marching orders, not from any enemy. (Cheers, boos.)

whenever I see these results for Paul, I think Hillary is behind this. You just know she has a major committee whose only job is to secure a 3rd party candidate to siphon off Republican votes. We have seen from the fundraising scandals and other moves that she has essentially just dusted off Bill’s playbook, and they well know the key factor in their victory was Perot.

Either Maryland has no REPUBS, the State Fair was a bust or the booth was behind the live bear exhibit.

Is this a declaration of war?

Joint Resolution to Authorize the Use of United States Armed Forces Against Iraq

What's the difference between a declaration of war and a joint resolution?

This joint resolution may be cited as the "Authorization for the Use of Military Force Against Iraq".

a) AUTHORIZATION. The President is authorized to use the Armed Forces of the United States as he determines to be necessary and appropriate in order to

(1) defend the national security of the United States against the continuing threat posed by Iraq; and
(2) enforce all relevant United Nations Security Council Resolutions regarding Iraq

Under international law?

I had no problem understanding what jdub said, you obviously did.

Here let me ‘plain it to ya! The clintons’ somehow, (I’m guessing government contract here) convinced perot (the weasel from TX) to run as a 3rd party candidate to fool (gullible) conservatives into voting for him (perot) instead of Bush the elder. It worked twice for clinton (the sleaze) and so now ARE they looking to Paul to play perot’s role so the hildabeast wins by default?

I hope Dr Paul is too principled to take them up on it, but if he decided to leave the Republican party and run as an independent, it would look like something we have seen before, to a lot of us.

Words mean things, actions mean things.

Congressional Declaration of War on Japan
Declaring that a state of war exists between the Imperial Government of Japan and the Government and the people of the United States and making provisions to prosecute the same.

Joint Resolution to Authorize the Use of United States Armed Forces Against Iraq
Whereas United Nations Security Council Resolution 678 authorizes the use of all necessary means to enforce United Nations Security Council Resolution 660 and subsequent relevant resolutions and to compel Iraq to cease certain activities that threaten international peace and security

(a) AUTHORIZATION. The President is authorized to use the Armed Forces of the United States as he determines to be necessary and appropriate in order to ...enforce all relevant United Nations Security Council Resolutions regarding Iraq.

Hmmm . GW Bush first president to the United Nations? LOLOL!

do you notice there is no declaration of war in the second document? Did you notice the list of where as-es goes on seemingly forever citing all kinds of internationalist gobbledy gook?

Your argument is all wet.

“Your argument is all wet.”

What argument is that?

The only info I posted was the actual us declaration of war against Japan.

The truth of the matter, IMHO, is that laws/regs/constitution are passive. On their own, they do nothing. It is the interpretation/enforcement/etc. of them by people that causes them to have force.

Ending nation-building and installing a democracy while simultaneously fighting a half-assed war in a regional hell-hole while our borders remain wide open isn't cut-and-running.

his statements about 9/11 and a possible Tet Offensive, etc.

Have been spun by Giuliani and the GOP establishment.

and his isolationist policies are. Just to name a few.

Not isolationist, pro-America. No involvement in globalist organizations that urinate on our sovereignty.

I've seen it as have many others. Go see for yourself. The spammers are over there, too, believe me.

What spammers? LOL. FR PIONEERED disrupting online polling. Now it's a cardinal sin if Paul supporters engage in it? BTW, the Fox poll was only ONE vote PER cell phone. Unless Paul supporters had a dozen cell phones apiece, it was impossible to spam the poll. So Faux News lied out of their ass and debunked their own poll.

Whatever. A lot of lefties dig the guy.

Traditional lefties do. The middle-class folks concerned about their jobs and sovereignty, and the influence of trans-national corporations. I doubt that the liberal moonbats support Paul, although some of them are trying to exploit his campaign.

You like to think that we are out here quaking in our cowboy boots in fear of the powerful Paul but we are not.

Have you forgotten that I lived in Brazoria County Tx when Paul ran for his first elected office? We still own property there.

Have you forgotten that I told you I met him on several occasions when he campaigned? I met a very nice OB/GYN named Dr. Paul. Well thought of as a doctor but when he voiced his political ideas to us he was a nut. I watched him closely on the debate, he is STILL a nut. He blames US for the Muslim attacks, only a blind idiot would think that.

He is not presidential material, he needs to retire to a lake some where and fish. There are several good bass lakes not far from Lake Jackson, I’ll advise him if he needs help selecting one.
