Whoopi, Larry and Fred: What Could They Be Thinking?
FOXNews.com ^ | September 6, 2007 | Susan Estrich

LOS ANGELES — It’s one of those days.

You give people a microphone, or you vote them into office, and you’d think that they’d think before they open up their mouths. You’d think that some modicum of intelligence and common sense would be required for them to get where they are. And yet there they are, saying things, doing things, that leave you open-mouthed, wondering whether they think we’re that dumb, or they really are.

You know who I mean. Whoopi Goldberg. Larry Craig. Even the Fred Thompson campaign. Spare me.

Susan Estrogen at it again. She did such a bang-up job running Dukakis’s campaign, that now she’s an expert?

The article is from Susan Estrogen.

I won't even read it. She immediately lumps the quadruple abortionist Whoopie and the serial bathroom smeller in with Fred Thompson?!

It shows how much liberals fear Thompson.

I could add, Susan, that you give someone multiple face lifts, 30 pounds of makeup, 2 pounds of hair dye, and a cameraman - they will make fools out of themselves trying to look like Ann Coulter.

Don’t forget Susan’s moment of glory during the last Presidential election when she sold the idea of skewing exit polls to the dems, on the theory that if they said Kerry was winning, more people would vote for him or just go home, discouraged and not vote. She demanded Fox/Brit Hume use on air exit poll numbers she’d given him, (fake), and he said, but they weren’t holding up. All but foaming at the mouth, she stormed off the set when Brit said Bush was winning. She was persona non grata to the dem party for months and months. Now, due to botox and whatever else she had done, she’s back on camera, the big expert.

Ah, the Clinton attack dog stikes again. And I do mean dog. If you've seen Susan lately and watched her talk, you'd see the only thing that moves is her jaw, the rest looks like morticians bondo, nothing moves. Her eyes look soulless(pun intended) and she is still apologetic about the Clintoons.

This is just another attempt to take a cheap shot at Fred before he really gets going. The smell of fear is strong in her, she knows the threat Fred will be to her girl, Hillary.

First, she is right about Whoopie. I can't believe Goldberg is still on the View after her racist comments about Michael Vick.

Yes, I said racist. She essentially said that poor black kids grow up in a culture of torturing and killing pets.

Second, I agree with her on this one thought:

In fact, millions of people do watch debates, hoping to decide which candidate they like best. They may not be “regular people,” but I’ll tell you who they are: voters. Primary and caucus voters. The people most interested in politics are the ones most likely to watch debates. The people most interested in politics are the ones most likely to vote in primaries and caucuses, and determine who the nominee is.

Fred Thompson dismissed every one of us who watched last night's debate. It was fine that he skipped it. He should have said he skipped it because he had just entered the race and didn't want to make the debate a circus. Instead, he essentially said that "Fred" is here, so we can all stop doing this whole primary thing.

The old windbag is at it again. You're opinions are a mass of contradictions. Fred didn't dimiss anyone nor did he disrespect anyone last night. Fred respects the primary process, he just isn't fond of debates that give way to 15 second sound bites taken from 90 second responses. Fred handled things just right last night. By not attending the dog and pony show, Fred was able to be seen by more Americans by appearing with Leno. And after all, thats what politics is all about. Get your message out to the most people. Fred accomplished his goal and his message is right on the money.

I suppose we could argue whether it would have been better if every candidate had skipped the debate and instead requested 10 minutes with Jay Leno.

And I realise that some of the “dissing” of the debate was Jay Leno. But Fred did say that it was harder to get on Jay Leno than get into the debate, which was most certainly false, as Fred didn’t have to do anything particularly great to get onto Jay Leno’s show.

So I think in that way he DID try to minimalize those who chose to participate in the debates.

I don’t know how much we can fault the candidates for how bad the groups are running “debates”, or for the fact that there are still so many candidates that the debates lose their effectiveness.

But it wasn’t just MY opinion that Fred was dissing the other candidates. Most of the coverage by news organizations put it the same way, so the “conventional wisdom” is that his act was a snub against his opponents.

What you fail to grasp is, Fred played by his rules last night. He didn’t play according to rules created by others. The fact he was successful in his efforts makes the entire evenings events that much sweeter. It was a special night. A night when politics and entertainment merged, as they often do in our modern pop culture. If anyone felt slighted, that is their problem.

This has obviously pissed of quite a few folks around FR. Frankly, I think there were several candidates on the stage last night who were glad to see that Fred stayed away.

As for the news media. We conservatives know they’re mostly liberal. You need to take that into consideration on anything they report. Fox News is well know as a friendly promoter of Rudy Giuliani. They clearly don’t give the same deference to the other Pubbies running. That includes Fred Thompson. But things have a way of changing when you least expect it. After offering cheap pot shots aimed at Fred over the last few months, both Fred Barnes and Mort Kondracke -— two Rooty shills -— gave Fred serious kudos for the way he handled the entire campaign announcement process yesterday. You could see they were very sincere. They know Fred is the real deal. Might even say they both ate some crow. LOL

I’d say it was a job well done. Thank you, Fred.

OK. My point, which you are free of course to reject, is that "pissing off quite a few folks", some of whom are willing to support him, is not MY definition of "successful".

I think he could have acheived all the other things you claim, but also NOT pissed me off, if he had simply changed what he said about the debate a little when he appeared on Leno, so as not to be so dismissive.

Obviously, some people think that his dismissive attitude HELPS his election changes, and other people don't think he was dismissive. And also obviously some people who are "pissed off" are just looking for an excuse because they support another candidate.

But I'm happy to support Fred even though Romney is currently my first choice. So when his comments made me think less of him, I thought that was noteworthy, and something to be considered.

I realise he isn't going to please everybody, but I am hoping that Fred, or Mitt, can end up being a candidate that rises above the pettiness and makes people WANT to support them, NOT because they have belittled the rest of the crowd so I have no choice, but because they are so clearly able to bring a majority coalition together.

I do reject your opinion on this issue, as I do on most issues. You find fault with everything. You’re a nitpicking cynic -— fwiw, you’re not alone. There are many chronic whiners on this forum. A few facts of life. Pissing off some folks is simply a byproduct of living. Being successful is the end product of taking the right action(s). Fred was highly successful the other night. As for you. I suggest you purchase the biggest pacifier they make, then stick it in your big mouth.

I can’t disagree that I fault with most everything — most everything does have faults.

Maybe I’m nitpicking as well, but I’m not a cynic. At least not much of one, although I’m getting more cynical with each “conservative” republican who suddenly support amnesty or is caught toe-tapping or hiring hookers or taking bribes or simply ignoring what we sent them to do.

But a cynic wouldn’t be upset by FDT’s performance, because they wouldn’t have expected anything different from a politician.

I on the other hand am not a cynic, I’m a dreamer, I long for a candidate who can rise above the petty political bickering and win simply by articulating a message that cannot be ignored by the electorate.

FDT I think could do that, and do so without belittling the debates or his opponents.

Anyway, FR is full of fault-finding on all the candidates, and certainly your posts have been no exception.

>>>>>I can’t disagree that I fault with most everything — most everything does have faults.

LOL Life is not perfect, because we humans are not perfect. What don't seem to realize, is candidates win elections on the big issues. Not on the small issues and not on official campaign announcements. If Fred had screwed up his campaign roll out, the media would have laid into him big time. That didn't happen. Fred was successful. End of story.

Not to open up a can of worms, but Fred is the only real conservative running in the top tier of candidates. Giuliani is a life long liberal, Romney is a flipping centrist and McCain is unpopular with conservatives for several key reasons. That should make the choice for conservatives an easy decision.

The conservatives at FR do not universally accept your contention that Fred is a “real conservative”. If Fred had more of the positions of a Duncan Hunter, they’d be a lot happier.

I do think Fred is “conservative enough”, even though I hold more conservative positions on some issues than he appears to.

Meanwhile, in the opinion of another of many people who I'm certain you take no interest in, Rich Lowry of National Review had this to say about the "highly successful" Leno appearance:

His appearance on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno announcing his candidacy was so somnolent that you could be forgiven for wondering if he wasn’t already bored with running for president.

Which I cite simply to show that my opinion does not appear to be baseless, as many other people had the same reaction.

I suppose on Election night, when a candidate is losing, you might have to finally admit that other people's opinions about a candidate matter.

Looks like I opened a can of worms.

>>>>>The conservatives at FR do not universally accept your contention that Fred is a “real conservative”. If Fred had more of the positions of a Duncan Hunter, they’d be a lot happier.

FReepers may not accept Fred "universally", as you say, but the majority of FR members found Fred to be 23.8% better than Duncan Hunter in a recent FR poll taken ---- 61.9%-38.1%. I like Duncan Hunter too. He's a good conservative. His ACU lifetime rating is a little higher than Fred`s. Hunter`s at 92 (88 in current year 2006) versus Fred`s 86 (89 in 2002 his last year in the Senate). I'd say both men are conservative enough for me.

Fred has had an impact on the 2008 race. The same can't said for Hunter. Fred's taken down Rooty`s support and increased his own level of support over the last few months. IMO, that is the biggest story of the GOP primary season, so far. Hunter remains stuck in neutral. Good conservative, poor candidate.

>>>>>I do think Fred is “conservative enough”, even though I hold more conservative positions on some issues than he appears to.

Well, I don't know about that. Fred is a self-professed long time federalist and by definition that means he supports limited government. You don't get more conservative than that. Fred wants to resurrect Reagan's Executive Order #12612, which ordered each government entity look at ways to adhere to the Founder's ideas of original intent, aka. federalism.

October 26, 1987 Federalism

By the authority vested in me as President by the Constitution and laws of the United States of America, and in order to restore the division of governmental responsibilities between the national government and the States that was intended by the Framers of the Constitution and to ensure that the principles of federalism established by the Framers guide the Executive departments and agencies in the formulation and implementation of policies, it is hereby ordered as follows:
