When former Tennessee senator and actor Fred Thompson makes his presidential bid official Thursday, his Utah supporters are planning to celebrate at a downtown party.
The event is just one of many being organized nationwide by self-described "Fred-Heads" who for months now have been pushing Thompson to get in the race for the GOP presidential nomination.
Thompson is scheduled to formally announce he's running via a webcast Thursday on his campaign site, www.imwithfred.com. Following the announcement, he's expected to campaign in Iowa, New Hampshire, South Carolina, Florida and Tennessee.
"We're just getting started, but I think a groundswell is coming," said Grant Lynn, organizer of the Salt Lake City party, set to begin about 5 p.m. Thursday at the Utah Republican Party headquarters, 117 E. South Temple. Lynn said the party is free and open to the public.
Lynn said he hasn't been involved in politics for years but was drawn back by Thompson.
"I really see that we need to make some changes. It needs to be different than the same ol', same ol'," the Salt Lake City financial planner said. "Otherwise, I'd be a (Mitt) Romney supporter."
Republican Romney, the former leader of the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, is the favored candidate of most Utahns according to recent polls. Like the majority of the state's residents, Romney is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Lynn, who served a mission for the LDS Church in France at the same time Romney did, said he's concerned that national surveys have shown some voters won't support a Mormon candidate for president no matter what.
"Any observer would have to look at that and say, oh, there's whatever percent who will never vote for Romney," Lynn said, citing polls that put that number at some 30 percent. "That's a lot of people."
Plus, Lynn said, Romney has changed his mind over the years about some key conservative issues including abortion. Romney, who now wants to see abortion banned, ran as a pro-choice candidate for the Senate in 1994 against Sen. Ted Kennedy, D-Mass.
"That has bothered me. That's one of the things I've enjoyed about Fred. He's not compromising," Lynn said, calling him especially tough on national security. "I like his message. I like his approach."
But that isn't likely to last for many Thompson backers, said Kirk Jowers, director of the University of Utah's Hinckley Institute of Politics and a longtime Romney supporter. Thompson "is the proverbial empty vessel," Jowers said.
"Fred is well-known from his TV and movie appearances and certainly has a charismatic, appealing presence," Jowers said, mostly as a result of having "not been scrutinized. Therefore, Republicans can fill him up with all of their beliefs and hopes."
Jowers said about half of all Republicans nationwide have complained about their choices this election. Even in Utah, some voters are looking for "more of that southern conservative model," he said.
Those voters will soon see Thompson doesn't fit the bill, he said. "I think conservatives in Utah and elsewhere will be disappointed in Thompson because neither his voting record nor personal life are the ideal that they are envisioning."
Lynn, though, is convinced he's backing the candidate most likely to win the White House. "Romney is well-entrenched, he's got a huge organization," Lynn said. "To me, the demarcation is that Fred is more electable."
I can live with Mitt being a Mormon. I can't live with Mitt being a gun grabber.

More cheap shots from the Precious Willard flunkies. They fear a real candidate like Fred.
How could I have missed this gem ? Compared to Fred, Precious Willard looks like Kucinich. I'm sure Romney's liberalism will fly over really well with the UT Conservatives. Slick Willy's flunky is sure working overtime to shovel the bullcrap.
Hmmm. I’ll have to get a nice bottle of wine and watch the webcast!
Here’s an article good for a few laughs. The desperation of the Willardbots is palpable. I love it. ;-)
Fred can and will beat the devil servant, Hillary, but if God himself picked it,he would pick Duncan Hunter.

Seems to me that this would be a better time to hit the ground running and get to work, instead of celebrating and partying...
The funny this is, you can sometimes get Mitt-wits to admit a truth that Fred-heads don’t share:
Mitt’s supporters would be OK with Fred, but Fred’s supporters would NOT be OK with Mitt.
Whether it’s Mitt’s gun grabbing, pro-abortion, or the Mormon thing, Fred-heads have a profound reason to oppose Mitt, while Mitt’s supporters have little against Fred other than that he he the greatest threat to their first choice.
I guess I’m just saying that Fred is likely just about everyone’s string second choice, if they are honest with themselves (except for the Keyes/Hunter types who are in denial of reality.)
All Fred has to do is get out there and communicate -
tell the voters why conservatism works, give historic examples,
and conversely, give examples and common sense explanations as to why “liberalism” ALWAYS fails and creates more misery.
My check goes in the mail at 10PM MDT.

Man, the Romney boosters sure all spew the same lame nonsense, don't they?
“Hmmm. Ill have to get a nice bottle of wine and watch the webcast!”
Do you know what time the webcast will be on Thursday? Sure it will happen sometime before his appearance on Jay Leno’s show Thursday night. Thanks for the info. :)
The fact that they all hit on the same themes, often with identical language, tells me that they're getting "talking points" distributed to them.
I guess the link didn’t work ....it was a Fred pres video
I would like to go to or host a house party, but I have a church function that night (I’m the youth leader at my church).
I did the search at Fred’s site, but the nearest house party is in Jonesboro AR....on OCTOBER 20!!!
Please tell me I’m not the only Fred Head doing something in the Memphis TN area.......
I haven’t been able to find anything going on around Indianapolis. I also would have a problem tonight because of church. It would be nice to connect with some other Fred supporters [although I have seen some bumper stickers]. Funny, I haven’t seen any for Hillary.
Well, I had a nice Columbia Crest Sauvignon Blanc a few weeks ago. It was almost as good as the Chilean Sauv. Blanc I'd had before. Or I may just get a nice bottle of Hogue Reisling, and SirKit will join me; it's his favorite!
I would have LOVED to have a House Party, but my house is in total chaos because we’re remodeling to get it on the market. We’re leaving MA after almost 20 years and heading back home to MS! WooHoo!
I think Fred is going to be on Jay Leno's show TONIGHT. Folks were complaining because he was going on that show and not going to be part of the debate. Of course he COULDN'T be in the debate, if he were not yet a candidate, but the complainers don't care about little facts like that.
Although I’m not supporting Duncan Hunter, he at least has the credibility to run as a legitimate Conservative Republican alternative. A lot more than the Rudy McRomneypaul bozos.
Iowa’s pretty quiet except for DesMoines I believe has something scheduled....I’m going to try and catch FRed in MasonCity this Friday. It’s the closest to where we’re at.
Been to your town of Indy at least a dozen times...the place is very cool!!!!

...unfortunately, they can’t seem to make up their minds when to send out announcements.
Thanks so much for letting me know that Fred will be on Jay Leno’s show tonight! Also heard that his web-cast announcement will be at midnight. Wonder if that is correct?
“heading back home to MS!”
Where at in MS?
Just curious, we are just north of Memphis TN
