Real parenting from day one would be helpful, too.

Just look at the huge increase in the “new” drugs to treat bi-polar.
It is a self fulfilling diagnosis. They prescribe the drugs, and then treat the effects of the drugs they prescribe.
It is a scam. My wacko ex had my son diagnosed to control him.
The doctor diagnosed on her statement of fact. No testing required, just issue the script and your good to go......
(venting here)

I had an acquaintance in college who was bipolar. He was a blast to be around when he was "up".

Wonder if they've changed the definition of bi-polarity. The AMA (I think) recently did that with autism - end result was that literally hundreds of thousands of kids were diagnosed with it. Are all of them completely non-functional? Nope, and I'd be willing to hazard a guess that the drug companies are making out like bandits.

I remember my teenage years going from happy to depressed within a day....I do not think it was any psychiatric problem I think it was being a teenager....teenage moods are all over the chart...

IMO some parents today are too be busy with their own lives to put time into the most important job, raising their kids and they turn to pharmaceuticals to help raise their kids.

Well, more drugs and more of that sweet, sweet Federal tax money shoveled at the problem. School districts get a bucket of cash for each child diagnosed with a “special need.”

Why are you so sure? Is every thing have to be a medical problem?

There are two possible reasons for the "impressive increase" in cases of bipolar disorder in young people, the authors say. Either bipolar disorder was historically underdiagnosed in children and adolescents and the problem has now been rectified or bipolar disorder is currently being overdiagnosed in this age group.

Obviously there's a third POSSIBLE explanation, that the number of cases of true bipolar disorder is actually increasing.

You can’t prove bipolar folks.

I knew someone who had genuine bipolar disorder, which in those days was called manic depression. The symptoms were so extreme that no one had to prove anything.

As is the case with all mental illnesses, there is some legitimate basis for your skepticism. When it comes to manic depressive illness, this is exacerbated by the fact that the medical community have identified two very different varieties of the disease. On the one hand, we have Type II Bipolar, which is characterized be prolonged periods of depression, with some episodes of hypomania, as opposed to true mania(this is a bit of an oversimplification) as is the less severe version of the disease, and typically the one the diva is talking about on Oprah when she talks about her heroic struggle with mental illness. If this were the only type of Bipolar, I'd be right there with you, questioning its validity.

However, along with Type II Bipolar, there is also Type I. Type I Bipolar is easily recognized and identified as a mental illness. It is characterized by two or more periods of mania that included psychotic behavior. In general, most individuals with Type I Bipolar can not function with out medication.

I suspect that most of the confusion people have with Bipolar is the result of the medical community's willingness to group two similiar illnesses together. It is a mistake.

No doubt linked with the rising availability of prescriptives to treat bi-polar disorder.

I have RLS, as did my father....he figured out that walking helps, so when I walk everyday I do not have RLS...I also heard that quinine water can help the symptoms

I have no desire to take any drugs for it, it is short lived and I can deal with it.

teenage moods are all over the chart

My best friend's wife is a pleasant lady, but a hypochondriac. Their kid is a polite and (fairly, for a teensager) well adjusted 14 year old girl.

I managed to really step in it with him this weekend. He mentioned that wife and daughter were headed to the doc - apparently, the daughter is having some issues with hormones and mood swings, and they're looking to flatten them out with some medication.

My comment was "A Moody, Hormonal 14 year old girl? Whod've thunk it?!!" It didn't go over well.

I'm hoping that my friend will talk some sense into his wife. And, I'm guessing (my guess only, no knowledge of the matter) that they'd treat a hormonal issue with birth control pills, which opens up a whole other, far larger, can of worms. Seems a bit extreme, to me at least, to medicate a teenager because she's a little testy a few days a month.

I wish I could tell you my story because bitter? I am bitter that the GOVERNMENT allowed my daughter to destroy her life. I did write a book about it, called “Attention, Please”.

It’s so sordid and long but I knew she was faking since her adolescence. Oh I didn’t know it right away, of course not. At first I took her to every doctor, shrink, neurologist, you name it, in search of what was wrong with her. See, she kept threatening suicide.

she’s thirty now and STILL she threatens suicide. and yet she’s not once taken her life or in any way put herself in a position of danger. She’s married, got a daughter who I adore. I do my best to get along with her but a)I am ashamed of her and b)I know she’s lying.

I caught her faking. Both my husband and I caught her faking. It’s a long, sordid story but I am now firmly of the belief that we’ve got a bevy of children who figured out a way to scam the system. All of these mental ailments, they can’t be proved. Although husband and I did everything to convince the medical people and the school authorities that the girl was faking, no one wanted to take a stand.

She managed to convince the government doctors that she was mentally ill and unable to work and damn if she don’t collect a little check every month. ain’t a thing wrong with the girl.

I heard half of West Virginia is bi-polar. The problem with this alleged disease is it can’t be proven. Someone determined to get that diagnosis need only persevere and some gubmint flackie will make it so.

My daughter read my book and she knows it’s about her. Sure, it’s supposedly fiction but it’s not. I will never mention this to my granddaughter, now only three.

But I wanted to tell my story and so I did.

And every word of my daughter’s character in the book is true. My husband will swear to it as well.

Yep....we see this all the time. Steroid shots, and other meds that don’t do a thing. If they come across something that really helps a dog with skin problems....they won’t use it so the pet owner keeps coming back. We see this because we manufacture excellent skin products for horses and dogs. People just need to stop and think, get away from the fancy foods and stuff that’s killing the dogs. Simple really........remember, dogs are meat eaters, uncooked meat with dry food and no corn in the feed. Do this and you’ll stay away from the vet.

Seems more apparent that doctors diagnose children with things these days. Teenage Johnny 50 years ago could go hunting with his friends in the woods and bring something back that they could eat. Teenage Johnny could go in the woods today, and have his car surrounded by ATF when they get back to it; he would be diagnosed with some weird disease, put on medication for the rest of life, and never be able to touch a gun again.

It’s not medical problems that are the answer. Look at the parents.

I am 50 years old and a mom of 3 boys my youngest is 19. My neighbor and I always joked about getting through the teenage years, we both had 3 boys. We felt lucky if any of us survived. My neighbor had trouble with their youngest son, he is a senior in HS so he spent 5 days with his much adored older brother. The older brother really yanked his chain and he came back a much improved kid.

I work as a school nurse and I see parents running to the doctor for every sneeze and sniffle out there....

I hope you friend can intervene with the wife and daughter but that could be hard.

I’m not confused, but thanks anyway. Just say no.

An organic brain condition that is truly clinically identifiable and backed up with lab/imagery, etc is worthy of treatment. The whims and income requirements of the various cottage industries that have piled on this “opportunity” seems criminal to me.

Mostly the PC crowd is ruining the kids. No more PE classes for exercise in the schools. Parents and teachers tell the kids they can do no wrong but the world tells them different.....totally confuses the kids and they aren’t old enough to know what to do about it.
