Thompson Plans to Crash This Party
New York Times ^ | 1 September 2007 | By ADAM NAGOURNEY

Posted on 09/01/2007 7:02:15 AM PDT by shrinkermd

Fred D. Thompson, the soon-to-be-official presidential contender, has come under a good deal of criticism in New Hampshire this week for scheduling his formal announcement for next Thursday morning and thus skipping the Republican debate in Manchester on Wednesday night.

But that does not mean that television viewers watching the debate will not see him.

Campaign officials said Friday that Mr. Thompson had bought a 30-second spot that would be televised nationally on the Fox News Channel, the network carrying the debate, just as viewers are tuning in at the onset.

One campaign official familiar with the decision said the spot would be a sneak preview of the announcement that Mr. Thompson will make the next day in a video posted on his Web site, to be followed later Thursday by campaign appearances in Iowa.

Mr. Thompson had come under pressure from the New Hampshire Republican Party and the editorial board of The New Hampshire Union Leader to participate in the nationally televised debate.

But Republicans close to the Thompson campaign felt that the risks would probably be too great for any benefit. In the worst case, he might have made a mistake or come under attack from his Republican rivals, overshadowing the highly scripted rollout he has prepared for the next day.

We need SERIOUS change in Washington. This cat believes Fred can - and will - make it in ‘08. He’s got hundred-million dollar name recognition, he’s presidential, and he’s got common sense. I like that. And I are serious cat.

The MSM and Liberals despise anyone that has a brain and who can outsmart them. Liberals have become accustomed to being unchallenged and given free reign to use their play book made up of dirty tricks, accusations, slander, corruption, and innuendos in conjunction with their allies in the MSM. Time for our side to step down into the gutter where they live and fight on their turf using their tactics. Let the games begin! Up to this point, the GOP leadership hasn’t shown any gonads or fortitude in fighting Liberal sleaze. A goal for the base needs to be ridding the party of RINO’s who have openly shown us what they are. Our children’s and grandchildren’s futures depend on defeating Liberals and ridding our Party of RINO’s (closet Liberals).

And considering the average intellectual prowess of the MSM and Liberals in general, that happens very often. I guess that explains why the Liberals have so much hate built up...

It just goes to show what a liberal arts education from a liberal arts college with a law degree will get you.

The left is fueled by emotion and not reason. Even in court, there is no longer any reason or evidence. It is pure emotion, psychology and hollywood theatrics to state their case.

What has Fred flip-flopped about to earn the chinese shoe factory remark? Changing one's mind because of new information, or a realization that a past stance was simply wrong, is not a flip-flop. A flip-flop is changing ones mind purely for expediency. If you can show that Fred has changed his mind for expediency, and has done that several times, then of course the chinese shoe factory comment would be fitting.

Is he now opposed to layiing off Americans to replace them with H1-B visa holders? Does he now support anti faud measures when it comes to hiring foreign workers?

Some things are a pretty simple matter of right and wrong and I won’t bother with a man who needs to take a second look to triangulate his position.

I am having a hard time getting excited about any of the current crop of Republican candidates. That worries me, a lot.

In 1995, I don't recall anyone expecting Clinton to get re-elected the next year. After all of the fiascos in his first term, from Hillary's attempt to take over the health care industry to Reno's massacre at Waco, I expected Clinton to lose in a blowout just like Jimmy Carter did in 1980.

Then the Republicans nominated Dole, whose only justification for running was it was his turn.

We can very easily end up with President Hillary in 2008. Be afraid. Be very afraid.

Yeah, Fred sucks. That clinches it, I’m going to find the stiffest and stodgiest congressman that nobody ever heard of and support him for president. Hopefully, it’ll be a guy who has a lousy attendance record, who drones on about building walls, and votes to fund as many teapot museums as he can.

I think it would also help this congressman’s cause if his supporters were the most ornery, unappeasable, moonbats we could find.

Once I’ve found such a man to support, I can blame the dastardly MSM for not covering his campaign enough. When I’m not doing that, I can tell people who support other candidates that it’s their fault that mine isn’t doing well, because they won’t support my guy.

Thank you for convincing me! I’ve seen the light!

Don’t forget this requirement: That stodgy candidate must run a very poor, almost non-existent campaign, so that he’s at about 1% in the polls.

I don't know...is he....does he?

I am aware of Thompson's historic stances on legal immigration and in the cases cited above, I don't agree with him. But you have accused him of flip-flopping for expediency, and so far, I don't see any documented support for that accusation.

Wow! No, I hadn’t seen that. An admission that Hunter can’t win from inside his own campaign! So, why, then, is he campaigning? It looks as though some of us were right all along—he’s just using a presidential campaign to collect funds for his PAC so that he can give his PAC money to his son’s campaign after he drops out. If that’s true, it’s certainly dishonest.

‘Greed’ fuels capitalism. Capitalism is a conservative ideal.

I reject the notion outright that there is something wrong with working hard for the best of things. People who speak of ‘greed’ are usually socialists or angry class warriors that are upset that someone has nicer things than they do. Which are you?

Pretty much where I am. I do not think Fred is as great a communicator as Ronald Reagan but I do think he has the best presence of any of the curren candidates, a solid conservative record and.... he can win.

Rudy will turn off a number of folks.
Romney will turn off a number of folks.
Nobody else has decent name recognition.

If we don’t want Castro’s ticket in the White House (Hildabeast/Obama) we need to get behind Fred now. Democrats will be out in force in 2008, we have to have a candidate that can bring out the conservative vote.
