U.S. troops release Iranians detained in Iraq Military hands 7 over to Iraqi authorities hours after their apprehension

BAGHDAD, Iraq - U.S. troops released seven Iranians early Wednesday, hours after detaining them at a central Baghdad hotel, an Iranian embassy official said.

The Iranian diplomat, who refused to give his name, told The Associated Press that one of those released contacted the embassy Wednesday morning to say that they have been handed over to Iraqi authorities.

American troops raided Baghdad’s Sheraton Ishtar hotel and took away a group of about 10 people late Tuesday. The diplomat said the seven Iranians included an embassy staffer and six members of a delegation from Iran’s Electricity Ministry.

Release Hell!

They should have invited them to a compulsory old fashioned, all-American NECKtie party!

Hey, it’s a swingin’ event!

A rusty knife to their throats would have been a better idea.
But we aren’t allowed to send a return message like that are we.

The message will only have effect when Ahmadinejad is too scared to visit Iraq next time. The message should be (and I guess this is what you are referring to)”we can grab your officials and agents anytime”. But I think keeping them arrested would have given the message a bit more bite.

On the other hand, let’s say they were more than diplomats (why we grabbed them in the first place).

To all those whining about “catch and release”, maybe our friends in the Iraqi military and police WE’VE been training have better “interrogation” techniques that can be employed without the DBM and democratic presidential candidates being outraged.

"In other news, two US Army soldiers are being prosecuted by the Justice Dept. for allegedly firing their weapons into the posterior of an Iranian infiltrator. The soldiers didn't immediately report the incident and failed to fill out the proper paperwork. The Iranians was reported to be smuggling in 75 kilos of heroin from Iran, but has been given immunity for his testimony against the soldiers. U.S. Attorney Johnny Sutton is reported to be leading the prosecution."

So? Why are we supposed to respect their "diplomatic" status? Since creation of the Islamic regime they have trampled on our and others rights and conventions with feet. They didn't respect our diplomats 1979, they attacked Western embassies 2006, they kidnap Western soldiers, they attack our allies, they kill our soldiers.

Excuse me, but I fail to see the relevancy of their "diplomatic" rights.

At the very least, ruffling Ahmadinejad's feathers isn't a bad thing!

So let me get this straight—You really believe that an Iranian in Iraq, representing the Iranian government, who says he/she to promote trade, is to be taken at face value? You probably also condemn the air line passengers who took matters into their own hands when a bunch of alleged Mullahs started acting up in the aisle of the aircraft—and just happened to drop OBL’s a few times as they chanted whatever it was they were chanting.

You know what? I think a Middle Eastern type could be standing beside you with a hand grenade and you would do nothing. Why would you do nothing? Because he hadn’t pulled the pin you could not read his mind to discern his intent.

Do you ever listen to yourself? And to think my son has been in harms way 5 times defending this country so pathetic people like you can say such stupid things.

WTF are you talking about? You best straighten up and take that attitude elsewhere.

So let me get this straight—You really believe that an Iranian in Iraq, representing the Iranian government, who says he/she to promote trade, is to be taken at face value?

Yes. You know why? Because the people in the armed forces that are there say so. I am not there, so I cannot say. You are not there. You cannot say. Do you mean to tell me that you know exactly what those Iranians were doing? I don't trust those Iranians anymore than anybody else. But someone let them go. And that someone just happens to know a little more about the situation than me or you. How can you say they are wrong...sitting in front of a computer....10,000 miles away?

I'll tell you what...if I ever talk to anyone in the Pentagon or the CIA, I will tell them to relieve all the military officers of their duty and when they need any advice on how to handle any foriegn policy situation, just ask dooltotheend, a guy sitting in front of a computer yapping on a political forum. He knows it all!

As for the other comments you made......uhm....WHAT?

Bottom line: the damn Iranians were released from U.S. custody and control. That isn't automatically a good thing, given the various shadowy pro-Iranian factions all over the place.

I think you are being hammered because you are taking a rather naive perspective that Iranian diplomats in Iraq are doing simple diplomatic duties.

To suggest that is naive on its face considering the nature of Iran today, the state of war in Iraq, Iran’s involvement and their heavy infiltration of Iraqi territory aiding the destruction of Iraqi citizens throughout the country.

Now if you suggest same again, you would probably be more welcome at a Badr Brigade meeting or dinner with associates of Mookie.

But people here, especially folks serving in the war zone just are not going to be receptive to that kind of naive view of Iranian diplomats in Iraq.

Perhaps you can now understand why.

The Iranian diplomat, who refused to give his name, told The Associated Press that one of those released contacted the embassy Wednesday morning to say that they have been handed over to Iraqi authorities.

Well once again the posted headline is a lie. Here is the actual headline on the story. U.S. hands detained Iranians to Iraq authorities Group of 8, including 2 diplomats, detained over unauthorized weapons

No, just another PC media lie. Here is the actual headline on the story. Rather then cling to their Know Nothing ignorance, maybe the Dinocons might want to grasp, finally, that the bulk of the fighting and dying in Iraq on our side is being DONE BY IRAQIS.

I'm with you on this one. My immediate thought was maybe the Iraqis use "Coercive Interrogation" techniques that we're not allowed to use thus turning them over to an Iraqi Intelligence Extraction Unit may not be bad, Hopefully.....good intelligence will come out of this that's actionable. These guy's need to stand up on their own anyway at some time and Information Gathering will be a large part of this conflict for a very long time coming,

By the way, Thank you son for his service, he is the true American hero.
