When a woman saw three men break into her bedroom window late Friday night, she took out a gun and fired several times.
It didn't stop the men, though. They came in through the window of her South Fort Myers home, and after a struggle, they tied her hands then took off with money and jewelry.
It all happened sometime before 11:40 p.m. Friday, and detectives were still looking for the suspects Saturday.
The woman, who is in her 20s, was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
She shares the home at 6770 Briarcliff Road with her boyfriend, but she was alone at the time of the break-in.
Det. Michael Hollow said it isn't clear why the woman's home was targeted, and he also said this was the first incident of the kind he has heard of in South Fort Myers this year.
"Home invasions don't happen that often," he said.

Something fishy here. After being shot at several times the men only tie her up? Sounds like an insurance scam.

Definately fishy, probably punk friends of her bf.
To: Maximus of Texas
I agree. This sounds fishy. Did she empty a revolver or full magazine and miss all 3 men in her home at close range? And the men didn’t run, but instead took her gun away when she had the drop on them.

Something fishy here. After being shot at several times the men only tie her up? Sounds like an insurance scam. It does sound fishy. Who continues their invasion when they're being shot at? Unless, of course, those shots are totally ineffectual and the invaders know it--but it presumes some pretty risky threat assessment under less than ideal conditions.
The shots are fired. The jig is up and the neighbors must have heard. And yet there's time to "tie her up" and continue the invasion/robbery?
To: Edgerunner
She just leaves the backdoor open for me.
Kidding!

Either this was a setup, or the girl did not have it in her to actually shoot the invaders, but instead fired "warning shot" after "warning shot"
If you cannot actually shoot an attacker, you have no business owning a gun. It is not a magic wand that will make bad guys go away merely by waving it at them

A lot of women do really well. Unlike many men, they typically don’t think they know it all, so they really listen when they get their range instruction, and get good results.

Here's the residence. Looks like a nice place. Since she is in her 20's and has a boyfriend is it safe to assume he is in his 20's also? Do the math: young couple, in over their heads with their mortgage which is common with the current problem of overextended credit causing the sub prime rate/foreclosures fiasco, so they stage a break in for a quick cash in. This is all speculation mind you.
To: SauronOfMordor
Either this was a setup, or the girl did not have it in her to actually shoot the invaders, but instead fired "warning shot" after "warning shot" If so, wouldn't the attackers shoot (if they have weapons) and kill her? Eliminate the threat.

VERY likely scenario. Would explain how they’d afford such a nice place. Pretty common here in Florida actually drud dealer’s living in a nice place in a nice neighborhood trying to be inconspicuous. Wouldn’t be surprised there is a meth lab on the premises. Again only speculation...

Hmmmm...You need to keep an eye on this one. Any time I see the victim is a young person my BS flag goes up. I doubt jewelry was taken unless she was house sitting. No description of the perps and no harm done on the lady...

Something fishy here. Seems that way, but you could run an insurance scam without faking armed resistance.
Gunfire is ALWAYS going to cause more police interest in the crime even if no one is hit, and more police interest can result in discovery of fraud.
Somethin's up, but it may not be an insurance scam.

Dont try that at my girlfriends house. Shes a deadeye shot shooting! Or at my single daughter's house. She can outshoot me or her brother any time any where. I taught both of them plus my wife to shoot handguns with a little H&R .22 revolver and rifles with a scoped Mossberg semiauto when he was about 8 and she was about 12.
None of us have had to fire a gun in self defense unless you count the 5-1/2' rattler that my wife nailed with the H&R revolver on our front door steps. She started out the door to go to work one morning when I was on a sales trip and the snake was coiled up on the top step she was about to step on.
I thought I got away from big diamondbacks, cottonmouths, and gators when I left FL for the Blue Ridge mountains, but a nearby neighbor shot a 5 foot timber rattler last week that was under his tool shed and a man down the road a short way lost a leg to a copperhead bite just after I moved here 10 years ago. I could probably kill a snake with a stick just as well, but I carry a little .22 Beretta pistol whenever I have to walk in the thick underbrush around here.

A friend of mine hasn't been to a range in 3 years (CCW-holder). I told him
not to bother pulling it if anything happens because he'll kill
or injure an innocent bystander and be arrested.
Practice makes using a firearm second nature if trained right. Training is a must.
