08/22/2007 Kerry Statement on Bush Speech to the VFW
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: August 22, 2007 CONTACTS: Amy Brundage/Vincent Morris, 202-224-4159
BOSTON Senator John Kerry (D-Mass.) today made the following statement in response to the speech today by President Bush to the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Kansas City, Missouri in which the President invoked comparisons to the Vietnam War to defend his war policy:
Invoking the tragedy of Vietnam to defend the failed policy in Iraq is as irresponsible as it is ignorant of the realities of both of those wars, Senator Kerry said. Half of the soldiers whose names are on the Vietnam Memorial Wall died after the politicians knew our strategy would not work. The lesson is to change the strategy not just to change the rhetoric. We want democracy in Iraq, but Iraqis must want it as much as we do. Our brave soldiers cant bring democracy to Iraq if Iraqs leaders are unable or unwilling themselves to make the compromises that democracy requires. No American soldier should be sacrificed because Iraqi politicians refuse to resolve their sectarian and political differences.
It is unfortunate that President Bush would want to invoke a false comparison of Vietnam to Iraq, but not surprising that he would oversimplify the differences and overlook the tragic similarities. As in Vietnam, we engaged militarily in Iraq based on official deception. As in Vietnam, more American soldiers are being sent to fight and die in a civil war we cant stop and an insurgency we cant bomb into submission. If the President wants to heed the lessons of Vietnam, he should change course and change course now.
How embarassing that he is one of my Senators.
Dear Lord -
Thank you for sparing us this pompous, arrogant, blue-blood with an overarching sense of entitlement as President.
Someone close to ‘carry’ should tell HIM that America does not give a damn whats HE thinks.
But when Democrats compare Iraq to Vietnam, it's OK. Go figure.
They really are scared to death that the public might learn what actually did happen in Viet Nam aren’t they?
Is he talking about those soldiers he accused of war crimes Or those soldiers he said were only soldiers because they were to stupid to get into college.
"Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached." - Manuel II Palelologus
It does not matter what America thinks, it is what the Media think.
Why ELSE would anyone bring up the embarrassment of J.Carter all the time?
I’s way past embarrassing...
It’s... way past embarrassing...
More embarrassing than the other one?............
So the VFW has changed its name to “Veterans of Failed Wars”?
Cuz this is exactly what it’s gonna be guys like Kerry get their way. Shame on them for even giving him a forum.
Hence my name for him: J-FinK............
Hey, John, go check out “The Killing Fields” at your local blockbuster.
The only people dumber than you are the ones electing you to office.
Kerreee is not too Swift. He’s dangerous, stupid and won’t die soon enough...
Kerry’s treason sicken my soul.
What’s really embarassing is he might be the BETTER one...
Sorry to say that. It hurt me more than it hurt you.
