Stars come out for Thompson fundraiser
The Nashville City Paper ^ | John Rodgers

Posted on 08/23/2007 8:31:16 PM PDT by Josh Painter

Fred Thompson dipped into the Tennessee fund-raising well again Wednesday for his almost presidential bid, attending a $1,000 per couple west Nashville event that was also graced by top country music stars.

The event was held at the home of Gary and Lou Ann Brown. Gary Brown, an attorney with Baker Donelson in Nashville, used to work for Thompson, serving as special counsel on the U.S. Senate Committee on Governmental Affairs in 2002 when Thompson was the ranking member.

The event was attended by his mother and oldest son, Tony, Republican activists, state legislators and former Gov. Winfield Dunn.

Country music stars John Rich of the duo Big & Rich, Gretchen Wilson and Cowboy Troy also attended the event. Rich played for the gathering.

In brief remarks to a pair of reporters waiting near the house, the former Tennessee senator said it was “great to be back home.”

“I’m just delighted to be here and so happy that so many people have turned out to give me a good homecoming,” Thompson said.

On the prospects of an upcoming entry into the presidential race, Thompson said he would tell his supporters that he would have a “statement on that in the not too distant future.”

“So keep your powder dry,” Thompson said, repeating an oft-made statement the 65-year-old says to supporters breathless to call him an official presidential candidate.

Cars clogged Hickory Valley Road in both directions as they waited their turn for the valet service. Meanwhile, the valets were scrambling to find places to park all of the vehicles. After the street-side spots filled, Brown’s front yard was used...

I don’t see too many posts about other candidates having fundraisers on FR. They probably are, but I’ve not seen them posted.

Thanks for posting this one. Good to see how hard Fred is working, something going on with him almost every day.

I was strongly pro-Fred Thompson early on. But, both his (apparent) indecisiveness and less than stellar performances lately concern me. Can he...will he...live up to the hype he himself created??

I hope we haven't put all of our eggs into a basket with a whole in the bottom of it.

There has been nothing to indicate indecisiveness except for the fact that he hasn't been behaving as you seem to think he should and, therefore, you conclude, the problem must lie in him. Please, come away from the liberal mentality.

Here's the reply to the "indecisiveness" silliness.

Ronald Reagan announced his candidacy on Nov 13, 1979.
He announced his candidacy for reelection on Jan 29, 1984.

Thanks for the reminder. With the group of wet ends we have for candidates to this point in both parties, I think it's great that Thompson isn't wasting his time dealing with a bunch of folks who are in the process of self-destructing anyway.

There has been no indecisiveness on the part of Fred. He had to get his ducks in a row before he could officially announce.

I saw his "performance" at the Iowa State Fair and it was extremely impressive. My sister and her husband switched from being Tancredo supporters to Fred supporters.

THere was no indecisiveness on Fred’s part —it was all a financial decision. Reruns of CSI were scheduled through Sept 1 of this year — once Fred announced his candidacy those reruns would have had to be cancelled. If he had declared early he, and EVERYONE ELSE associated with the show, would have lost thier royalties for any reruns cancelled.

Give me a break...

Thanks for the informative photo(s). The guy (Cowboy Troy) is black? That alone makes me curious to hear how he sound. Who was the black C&W singer years ago? His name escapes me. Ya gotta understand, I was raised within 5 miles of NYC. You could take what I know about C&W, put it in a thimble, and it would still rattle around like a bb in a boxcar. I have simply never seen the appeal of it. Except e crossover performers like Jerry Jeff Walker. I was listening to him years and years before he hooked up with Willy and the boys. I will have to see where I can find snippets of all of these performers stuff on the net to listen to. Sure am not going to buy it just to find out I think they suck. There is really only one AM station you can get in this town (Kingman AZ) during the daylight hours and it is a talk radio station. Thanks again
