LOS ANGELES, Aug. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- A recent Zogby International poll question conducted for Associated Television News found that 66% of the American voting public in a recent poll of 1,020 Americans from August 8-11, 2007 (margin of error of +/- 3.1%) found that the American public rejects the notion that new gun control laws are needed. (LOGO: http://www.newscom.com/cgi-bin/prnh/20030425/ATNLOGO) The poll asked: "Which of the following two statements regarding gun control comes closer to your own opinion? Statement A: There needs to be new and tougher gun control legislation to help in the fight against gun crime. Statement B: There are enough laws on the books. What is needed is better enforcement of current laws regarding gun control. Conversely, only 31% of the American public think new and tougher gun control legislation are needed. A majority of voters who support enforcement of gun laws already on the books exists virtually across all demographic groups and in all regions of the country with the only exception being Asian and liberal voters. "A majority of voters who support enforcement of gun laws already on the books exists virtually across all demographic groups and in all regions of the country with the only exception being Asian and liberal voters." The lefties are a natural but what's up with Asians?
I know an engineer from Hong Kong who is totally appalled but at the same time fascinated by the availability of guns in this country. He thinks no one should have them but if we crazy Americans insist on owning firearms then they should be limited to one rifle and one handgun per person. In .22 cal.
What a hoot!

66% of the American voting public rejects the notion that new gun control laws are needed. 66% of the American voting public do not realize that their legislators do not have the power to enact new gun control laws as "needed".
It's doubtful that another 33% do either.
It's probably fair to say that only about 1% of the voting public actually understand that Article VI, along with the 2nd, 10th, and 14th Amendments, forbid any level of gov't in the USA from infringements, or prohibitions, on our individual rights to own and carry weapons.

Polidiots who think for one second that criminals will follow their new and improved law are full of sh*t !
The only thread keeping this nation from anarchy from within is the standard Mk 1 Mod O armed law abiding citizen going about their lives of work, raising a family and trying to enjoy what little freedoms we have left !

Speaking as a woman who grew up in a strict no-guns-allowed home and who didn’t even know anyone who actually owned/used a gun until I was 18, this is typical of people who don’t understand that firearms are tools, each type being best or preferred for specific uses and various models among the same type being appreciated for specific attributes.
Strangely enough, my husband grew up w/similar attitudes and today owns somewhere in the neighborhood of a dozen firearms.
A friend of his makes it his job to teach men who have this sort of ignorance about guns and to introduce them to various types/makes/models. He has turned some into afficiandos.

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1885059/posts Many here at FR disagree with the basic concept that Congress is not enpowered by the Commerce Clause to prohibit commerce that is "completely internal, which is carried on between man and man in a State, or between different parts of the same State, and which does not extend to or affect other States."
-- These FReepers believe that our 'War on Drugs' is justified by "Congressional findings", -- opinions that prohibitions on dangerous products are a "necessary and proper" role of Congress.
Needless to say, many in Congress also see firearms as 'dangerous products'.

I like that!
My Asian engineer friend not only is afeared of and fascinated by guns but likes to bring up the topic during business meetings, social gatherings, etc. Of course, yours truly is pointed to as the typical American gun nut. He’s trying to elicit sympathetic responses in his audience which I find interesting. Honestly, there is a lot of gun ignorance out there.
I’ve offered to take him shooting several times but - get this - he is afraid that if he had a real live gun in his hands that he’d turn into some sort of crazed killer.
Muy humoroso!

There wasnt any percentage given because there was no option 3, I remember answering that survey.
Thats really the problem with most of Zogbys surveys. The "correct" (logical/Constitutional/moral) answer is almost always missing leaving one only able to give the answer that is the lesser of evils. The only "opinions" in these polls that one has to choose from are two dimensional representations of opinions that Zogby wishes you to believe the Democrat and Republican leadership hold. The outcomes of these polls often then do not represent the opinions of those polled at all.
After being polled I often send emails and explain the problems with their questions and ask about where such a wrong headed question would have come from in the first place. I have yet to ever get a response.

"We dont demonize cars the way we do guns." People who see the usefulness of cars are able to rationalize their use despite their dangers.
The same is true for many of us regarding firearms.
Your friend needs to hear, "When seconds count, the police are only minutes away". It's unlikely that he intends to summon an unarmed police officer when he dials 9-1-1. Ask him how he justifies expecting another person to face a life-threatening situation that he refuses to face. Why doesn't he expect the cop to "just give the criminal what he wants"?
Several of my Asian friends are very pro-gun. The two of whom I am thinking both fled from communist regimes. The government had guns; they didn't. They do now.

From the New York Times, March, 8, 1994.
Democratic lawmakers praised the Mayor's push for gun control.
"It would be great if Mayor Giuliani could become the point Republican pushing comprehensive gun control legislation," said Representative Charles E. Schumer, the Brooklyn Democrat who is the leading proponent of handgun control in the House of Representatives.
A a liberal bully like President Giuliani and Chuckie Schumer will get along well!!!

Some people really shouldn’t own guns. Who knows? He may be right when he says he wouldn’t be able to control himself.
