Fred Thompson’s Not-Quite Campaign Draws Legal Challenge From Blogger By Marie Horrigan | 6:30 PM; Aug. 20, 2007 | Email This Article Republican Fred Thompson has spent an unusually extended period as a near-certain but still undeclared presidential candidate. In doing so, the actor and former Tennessee senator has skirted the edge of the murky federal regulations governing when a White House contender must officially declare a candidacy and file required documents with the Federal Election Commission (FEC), as reported by CQPolitics.com in a July 31 article.

Now a liberal blogger named Lane Hudson has filed an official complaint with the FEC, charging that Thompson has been “ignoring the letter and spirit of the Federal Election Law for his own political benefit.”

“Up to this point, no one has taken the time to take action against this abuse. I hope that the FEC will act quickly on this issue,” Hudson said in a statement.

I don’t know if this will amount to anything, but it’s a distraction that can be done without.

We should all thank the person brining this groundless complaint for all the free publicity. Many who have refused to take Fred seriously may be swayed by this sort of misuse of the system for partisan attacks.

An email I just sent to the writer:

Marie:

You and the rest of the Old Media really jumped on this non-story. Lane Hudson is a DNC operative and his FEC complaint is just another tactic of the Howard Dean smear machine. Think about it, an FEC complaint about someone who isn’t even an announced candidate. Where does that come from?

Thanks for all your reporting on Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama and their pre-declaration fundraising. Just a bit of balance would give CQ some credibility. Story idea: Democrats so fearful of a Fred Thompson candidacy enlist a gay activist to put a political hit out on him even before he gets into the race.

For the record, Hudson and the DCCC orchestrated an ambush of Congressional Republicans with the Foley nonsense. The story was shopped around for over a year before ABC News and Rahm Emanuel breathlessly presented it to the salivating media as a breaking scandal.

A bit of advice: Go out and do some real investigative reporting instead of waiting for press releases to show up in your inbox. I can tell by how much coverage this story got that you and many of your colleagues did just that.

Stenography is not journalism.

Fred knows campaign finance law and has lawyers and accountants that know it better still. This moron’s complaint will go nowhere.

Yes indeed. She had no idea for the longest time whether she wanted to run for public office.

Especially since “the complaint names the Fred Thompson for President Exploratory Committee, which does not exist. Instead, Thompson formed a different kind of committee, called Friends of Fred Thompson Inc.”

“Stenography is not journalism.”

That would make a great tag line.
