GOOSE CREEK Ingredients necessary to make pipe bombs were found Saturday in the trunk of a car being driven by two Florida college students, according to court documents.
Now the men will have to post a combined $800,000 in bond to get out of jail, a circuit judge decided this afternoon.
Youseff Megahed, 21, and Ahmed Mohamed, 24, have been charged with possession of an incendiary device, Berkeley County Sheriff Wayne DeWitt announced today. If convicted of the charges, the men could face between 2 to 15 years in prison.
Mohameds bond was set at $500,000 while Megaheads was set at $300,000....
...At this point, it is too early in the investigation to say there is any link to terrorism, Kolko said.
News that explosives were found Saturday shocked residents in Goose Creek, home to the Naval Weapons Station, which houses the U.S. Naval Consolidated Brig, a military prison where enemy combatants have been held.

And he set bail?
Isn't that an old '80's heavy metal band name?
Yeah, I thought the “FLA college student” bit was beyond lame - and where’s DHS? They’ve already got a bail CAIR could help them meet.
[sigh] very poor reporting.
Most kitchens, garages and even cars have the parts for a pipe bomb.
ping
This article doesn’t say very much, really. You would think that it takes a significant find to convince a judge to impose a half million dollar bail, but the memory of Mike Nifong is still fresh.
Many things can be used to make an incendiary device. This includes gasoline, paint, smokeless powder, and many common household items. Match heads can be used to make a bomb.
So what did they have that was deserving of this bail? Until we’re told, I have to adopt a wait and see attitude.
These two clowns were from USF Tampa where IIRC, a muzzie prof spent years spewing hate and calls to jihad. Bill OReilly kept busting the prof nightly on his show and said prof was IIRC eventually fired or perhaps sent home.
Sounds like the MO of the Muzzie doctors from Egypt who tried to blow up Glasgow...where the one guy torched himself. Hope his 72 virgins like their meat well done—a little charred around the edges.
Both of them are really naïve kids, Bedier said.
yea,sure.
Seems to be a lot of really naïve muslim kids getting arrested lately.
I hate seeing these would-be terrorists referred to as, “students”. Their educational status is immaterial and only serves as an attempt to add a layer of pseudo-respectability.
“They are naive kids.”
“They had (PIPE BOMBS??) in their cars left over from the 4th of July.”
OH BET ME.

Combined 800K bail. Stupid headline writers.
Those are Norwegian names, right? Darn Lutheran separatists...
I think the band was called “MegaDeath” or something like that ...
Megahed should be the name of a metal supergroup featuring members of Megadeth and Motorhead. A Lemmy/Mustaine pairing would be pretty loud... and I doubt they’d go easy on terrorists.
Awesome.

...the war on terror is just a bumper sticker...until it blows up in your face.
Indeed. I believe "bomb making materials" is the FBI-approved term for the contents of the typical kitchen tool drawer.
I have a feeling that there's less here than meets the eye and that the authorities are desperately trying to cover themselves for having gone off half cocked. I could be wrong, of course. But there are young men of 'Middle-Eastern extraction' in America with no more sinister goals than getting laid on weekends, very possibly by female fireworks enthusiasts.
Megahed, originally from Egpyt, has been enrolled at USF since 2004 and had not declared a major. He was registered for three hours this fall, according to the newspaper.
Megahed is 21, and hasn't even bothered to declare a major? Doesn't sound like a very serious student to me. Mohamed is 24, and , I assume, in a graduate program. If he's a serious Master's student he'd have an advisor who should be able to vouch for his active participation in a program of study. If neither one are moving towards a degree, they have no business hanging around here. Send them back home.
In future the State Dept. should REQUIRE that any student receiving a Visa REMAIN in full time student status in order to retain that permission. The colleges that accept them should also be required to report their status each semester. This will keep foreign students from wandering around the country, unaccounted for.
Temple Terrace is a hot bed of activity for them. Continue up and down the gulf coast and you'll find pockets of them, training and waiting. Funny thing that CentComm is right there in Tampa as well. Coincidence? I stopped believing in that stuff long ago...
Keep your eye to the sky, and your powder dry!
Dubh
for the story on the 2 saudi's who "took the bus"...
Well, at least no one is claiming they were Mormons on the way to a Romney rally.
I personally enjoy the way people overreact here. It seems that the most vocal here at FR subscribe to a “Muslim until proven innocent” philosophy when talking about anything wrong with the world.
Are they Muslims? Likely, but we don’t know. They are Arabic - that much is undeniable. There is a chance they aren’t even practicing Muslims. Their descriptions sound like typical college students. Of course, that doesn’t preclude them from being Islamic terrorists.
The explosives? Didn’t sound too threatening. Might they have been? Absolutely. The Goose Creek promixity may have been a coincidence, and it may not have been. Maybe they were homemade fireworks, and maybe they weren’t. As far as I know, it’s fairly easy to make a homemade bomb whether or not you’re terribly intelligent. Even a moron could, if they intended, make a better bomb from what the description we have is.
What about the laptop? We’ll have to assume it was confiscated. If there’s anything terrorist related on it, then I assume they’ll be taken care of. Will we hear about it? Maybe. Sure, that won’t stop the overreaction here - far too many seem to think there is some conspiracy to prevent the disclosure of their ethnicity. (Only CNN makes no mention of it, while other sites I checked clearly state they are Middle Eastern.)

It’ll be interesting to see where the bond monies come from. You can bet it’ll be coming...
Both of them are really naïve kids, Bedier said.
It takes a great deal of naivite to not put certain components like explosive materials, young Middle-Eastern men and a military establishment in close proximity to each other and not think someone might get suspicious. Especially when their stories didn’t jive with an innocent alibi. That kind of naivite belies their university-class IQ.
No it sounds like you are a nut if you don't think that something is wrong with 2 muslims that are 500 mi away from home with explosives in their trunk. And I haven't seen it determined to be firecrackers as yet. have you?
Detention until airplane available to parachute them into middle of Ramadi where we will let the friendly Sunni tribal heads and their local GI buddies know they are coming.
We need to do more of that - only faster. It took years to convict al Arian.

So they had some pipes and a can of gas. I've often had similar items in my car. I may even own materials for making my own fireworks. In the (quite likely) possibility that they are just naive kids I hope they have some rich relatives to post bond.
It’s obvious bail should have been denied. No links to terrorism? Is this guy nuts? Let’s see, Muslims with bombs targeting military base on U.S. soil? No terror threat there! What the frig does it take!?
Cho was naive too....
they still havent released half of his stuff!
K-1 Kerosene for my Dietz lanterns. Fertilizer for my lawn. Family two way radio. Cell phone. Spare saved junk wire. 15 minutes on an internet search engine. What house does not have these items?
"Us" People? Explain.
Well, you’re a prime example of my point above. You don’t seem to know the specifics of this case. In fact, the only thing concrete in your statement is that the military base is on U.S. soil.
We don’t know that they were bombs. If they were bombs, based on the description they weren’t very good bombs. We may never know. We do know they were driving away from the base. We have no proof that even if they were bombs they were targeting the base - the base that was in the opposite direction. Hell, we don’t even know that they were practicing Muslims. We know they were Arabic.
But go ahead and cry Muslim every time something bad happens. By the time an actual act of Islamic terrorism occurs, nobody will believe you.
Christ, I thought everybody had read “The Boy Who Cried Wolf.” Now I guess some people don’t understand unless it’s “The Poster Who Cried Muslim.”
Mohamed is originally from Kuwait and completed his undergrad education in Cairo, according to the Tampa newspaper. He has been at USF since January and was registered for six hours during summer session, the spokesman told the paper.
Megahed, originally from Egpyt, has been enrolled at USF since 2004 and had not declared a major. He was registered for three hours this fall, according to the newspaper.
One of them is named Ahmed Mohammad. Do think maybe that is a muslim name? You are being disingenuous. The reason posters here are quick to see potential islamic terrorist in this incident is becasue usually the MSM is quick to discount any Islamic link to the point of hiding the religion of perps who are islamic until they are compelled to do so.
? Cair to explain that statement?

You sound like an ACLU lawyer looking for work. And those 19 guys involved in the Trade Centers coming down were just taking harmless little flight lessons right? So harmless little pipe bomb materials is no big deal either. What a dope.
Sure, it’s a Muslim name. That doesn’t mean he’s ever set foot in a mosque. I know plenty of people with Jewish names who probably don’t even know what a synagogue is.
This isn’t the point, though. People are not merely speculating. The poster above proclaimed they were Muslim terrorists planning to bomb a U.S. military base. Are they suspicious? Absolutely. Are they more suspicious because they’re Arabic. But we do not know if they are terrorists.
While I believe that the drive-by media is generally far too cautious with its handling of Islam, I don’t necessarily believe that the absence of inclusion of religion in such an article necessarily means that they are hiding something. It may mean that there isn’t anything to hide.
Personally, while I find the situation pretty suspicious, I’m not going to unequivocally state they are terrorists and need to be tortured. I certainly won’t find out any incriminating further developments on CBS News (not that I watch) but I’m fairly confident that any more details you think the media might try to cover up will find their way here just the same.
