Sweden profits from public urination
www.thelocal.se ^ | 08/06/2007 | TT/The Local

Public urination is fast becoming something of a cash cow for Sweden, garnishing the state coffers with 1.8 million kronor ($264,000) so far this year.

Though fines for peeing in public were increased from 500 kronor to 800 kronor last October, this does not appear to have had any dampening effect on the practice, Metro reports.

This year's crop of outdoors types are well on the way to smashing last year's record of 3,328. Figures for the first seven months of 2007 show that 2,252 people have already been find for public peeing this year.

This can be compared to 2002, when police dished out a mere 900 fines for the same crime.

Members of the general public were most likely to be caught short in Västra Götaland, Stockholm and Östergötland. A large police presence, rather than peer presure, is thought to be behind the higher number of fines in these regions.

Interesting....a couple years ago, in Indianapolis, they charged 3 college kids for this and made them register as sex offenders.

Just more proof of Western culture going down the toilet.

Or rather we wish they would still USE the toilet. Geez.

Authorities are idiots everywhere on this earth.

At least you Americans have been intelligent enough to nurture an idea called ‘small government’ - don’t you EVER give up on this sanity of yours!

"small gov't", you have to wonder where it went.

The kids I'm talking about had been at the Indy 500, during those days, prosecutor brizzi was creating all kinds of made for T.V. moments. Now that the gangs are running the place you never see any of them on T.V.

- Although I’ve understood that the US has become very much like Europe the last decades, the ‘small government’ ideal is still a part of the national culture of your great country. These values are, hopefully, possible to restore.

My impression is that the US still is a very strong nation, despite PC politicians, the MSM etc.

A lot of things are great about Europe too, but we suffer from an exaggerated trust in things like politicians, unions, authorities, the medias and bureaucrats. Presently, it seems like Europe, at large, is beginning to wake up.

I hope this process will continue.

About 40% of Americans trust in those things too.

20% are ignorant or apathetic.

The other 40% of Americans are the only thing standing in the way of world government.

That’s about 120 US dollars. But they might be on to something here. Think if we just patrolled our local public golf course, our city coffers would swell. Something about guys and trees (or nice-sized bushes), I guess.

Public urination? dampening effect? Someone's have fun with the wordplay here. It's a wonder the author didn't title the piece: "Sweden: Urine the Money"...

Europe is aging. Increase in public peeing is probably driven by geezers who can’t find a bathroom quick enough.

Furthermore, urine can be easily crystallized into urea, which is an excellent snow melter in the winter.

That is one of the dumbest things i’ve ever heard. Common sense is rapidly going out the window in this country.

I’d normally object to people peeing in public, but i guess in Sweden and US golf courses that would just be trying to swim upstream

At one time the Confederates collected it to extract nitrates for making gunpowder. That must have been a fragrant operation.

Mark Twain was shocked by the casual practices of Italians when it came to relieving themselves. Something about walking a pace or two from mixed company and letting fly into the shrubbery. Sounds like spring break!

Curious that they would also be recording statistics in that regard...

“You’ve obviously never been to Europe.”

- I reckon you have, but I believe you’ve managed to avoid the ugly parts.

Large parts of Europe consists of people who deem the Volksvagen Golf an attractive car.

The US is a better place to live. Scandinavia is even better, but Europe as a whole is very different from Scandinavia.

You’re most welcome back, fellow FReeper!

Välkommen tillbaka.

I guess you’d find out a lot of things have changed.

Still a lot of Volvos and taxes, but also a population even more convinced they are suitable of staking out the future of mankind.
