The Boston Globe

WRKO paid 'servant' Carr $790,000

August 3, 2007

Howie Carr has protested that WRKO-AM is treating him like an "indentured servant," trying to force him to remain at the station when he is ready to bolt to WTKK-FM this fall.

But indentured servitude never looked so good: The conservative talk show host made $790,000 in salary and incentives last year, according to industry executives who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly.

And, had he hit all of his bonus targets, he could have earned north of $900,000.

"He was well-paid by industry standards, but they wouldn't pay him that if he didn't generate that kind of revenue," said Michael Harrison, publisher of Talkers magazine. "The top gun on a major-market radio station could be responsible for many millions of dollars worth of revenue each year."

Bret Cohen, Carr's attorney, declined to comment about Carr's pay.

This is hardly a secret. The running gag, in almost every program somewhere is that he's paid "eight hundred large" -- with the corresponding "dis" that he's not worth it.

Of course, Howie *is* actually 'RKO's revenue tent-pole, or they wouldn't be fighting so hard now to keep him, so, apparently, he's worth every penny of the "eight hundred large" they pay him. This being the *Globe*, of course, they'll always want to slip in the knife whenever they get the chance...

This story is not complete without highlighting former Speaker of the MA House of Representatives and convicted felon Tom Finneran's disastrous radio program on the same network.

There... Now it's complete.

OK, so he is a highly paid indentured servant.

I want to projectile vomit when I hear Tom Finneran get all excited when her interviews Ted Kennedy and John Kerry on the air like they are old chummy friends.

I like Todd Feinberg.

They need to give him a bigger and better time slot.

He is up on all his facts and knows how to stimulate an audience.

Considering Howie’s nonstop on-target taunting of corrupt Mass. Democrat Politicians, I’m surprised they have not tried to whack him. For 800 large Howie needs to hire a first rate bodyguard. God bless you for hectoring those slimeballs, Howie!

I like Todd’s show too.

He also does a live weekeend show Sat and Sun 1-4 ET. You can listen live via www.toddtalk.com

Howie is probably sick of working at the same station with Finneran, plus they pre-empt parts of his show with the Red Sox, who belong on WEEI. Not to mention that he will take over Imus’ old slot at WTKK.

eventually)...I run his show ping list.

C’mon WRKO! It takes a lot of cash to put up a respectable front in Howie’s chosen neighborhood of Wellesley, MA. I once heard one of his callers refer to his ‘hood as “Wells-off-ly”

Oh, the story is much better than that.

Howie also works for the Boston Herald. He had a rivalry with then-Glob columnist Mike Barnicle.

Barnicle was on Imus's show a lot, and told Imus an untrue story that Howie said something "unpolite" about Imus.

Imus then says something nasty about Carr's wife while she and her kids just happen to be in the car, with the radio tuned to Imus on WTKK-FM.

Carr's wife now has a new condo in FL, courtesy of Imus...

Barnicle also had a gig at WTKK-FM, btw.

So, Carr is now suppose to fill the hole at WTKK-FM left by Imus' firing, Barnicle didn't get the slot, and Howie now gets to go up against WRKO's felonious former hack politician that has little radio experience.

And, he gets away from being bumped for the BoSox and is now on FM with a better signal than WRKO.

And, WTKK-FM's drive time host no longer has strong competition.

Too bad. Howie could make for some entertaining drive time radio. I got him syndicated, so the move leaves a hole in my drive time listening. Hannity just doesn't do it, and Jerry Doyle's kind of dry for that that period.

Howie deserves praise

Amen, FRiend. I don't care what Howie makes... more power to conservative talk radio hosts!

You’re right. Howie is the most entertaining conservative talk show host. Sorry Rush, I love you but you are a close second. Hannity is okay, but not as entertaining as Howie. I believe Howie will eventually return to the late afternoon slot because it will be in his financial interest to do so. We know what motivates Howie. Todd Feinberg is excellent as a debater and a thinker, but he does not have Howie’s well-developed humor and his delicious taunting of liberals. No one can mock them like Howie does.
