Bullets flew in a bank parking lot in Miramar Thursday morning as an attempted carjacking turned into a shoot out.
Miramar police say it happened just around 5:30 a.m. in front of the Wachovia bank branch on Miramar Parkway and 68th Avenue. Fifty-seven-year old Bruce Allen Williams had just pulled his truck up to an ATM at the bank when two men got out of a small brown car and demanded the keys to William's truck.
As Williams got out of the truck and handed the would-be carjackers his keys, one of the robbery suspects fired on him. Williams, who has concealed weapons permit, drew his own gun and fired back, hitting at least one of the men. Williams was not hurt. Both of the robbery suspects then took off on foot as the driver of the small brown car fled the parking lot.
Police established a perimeter in the area in an effort to capture the 3 suspects, one of which is suffering from a gunshot wound.

We should make that moron wear the shirt -- "I was shot by my carjack victim and all I got was this stupid t-shirt."
Then again, the Constitution forbids cruel and unusual punishments...

I was not there. If they had the drop on him he may have been waiting for an opportunity to pull his piece. As they take the keys is a good time to move.
Still - at that time of the morning, heck any time, the wise will take a good look around the parking lot as they pull in and look for a parking space.
Not many people “just sit” in a parking lot. They are zipping in and out.
Keep you eye’s wide open and your head on a swivel.

I have to admit, I was wishing I was armed last night when I was cornered by two cars in a road rage incident, and one of the drivers came up to my window threatening me. Instead I called 911.
Glad the guy in this story was successful.

In that case, the epitaph on his grave stone will be "My Carjack Victim Shot And Killed Me... And it is all Bush's Fault."

How about one of those big yellow signs in your window saying, Warning: GUN ON BOARDLOL! I like the way you think!
Of course, in the real world, that is a very bad idea. If the carjackers, or any other criminals, see that sign (assuming they can read), and decide to go after you anyway, they will likely come in shooting. Or they may break in to the car when it is parked, looking for the gun. Better to have the fact that you are carrying come as a surprise to them.
And if you ever have to use the gun, you can bet your last dollar (and you may well have to do exactly that in lawyers' fees) that the noospaper and TV stations in your community will prominently show that sign, along with whichever of the 150 photos they took of you that seems to show you with a sneer on your face. Together those photos will prove that you are a dangerous "gun nut" who should be put behind bars for shooting that "boy" (He was only 17; and, yes, I know he was 6'4" and 225 pounds, but they will not mention that.) who "made everyone laugh" and was "turning his life around." They will show pictures of his grieving mother, grandmother, sisters, aunts, and two year old daughter, who now has to grow up without her father (as though he was actually actively involved with her), and his pregnant girlfriend (not the mother of the two year old). The activists in your community will stage demonstrations, and the District Attorney, facing reelection in the fall wil feel compelled to indict you for second degree murder.
You must prepare ahead of time to win the shooting AND what comes afterwards.
If you live in Texas, you may disregard the two preceeding paragraphs. (God bless Texas!)
But I still like the way you think.

Actually, in Florida they will show pictures of the family of the little dirtbag who “made everybody laugh” and “was turning his life around” as the family members grieve and then burst into uncontrollable weeping when they find out that, under Florida’s Stand Your Ground law, the shooter can not be prosecuted because he feared death or serious bodily injury, and the shooting occurred in self defense during the commission of a forcible felony.
Then the uncontrollable weeping will turn into mud splattered conniptions with rending of garments and gnashing of teeth when the family of the dead dirt bag finds out that, under Florida’s Stand Your Ground law, they can’t file a civil suit, either.
I like it here. :)

We're considering of retiring to Texas from California, for many obvious reasons. Can we carry our primary In Home Defense System (a Mossberg Cruiser 20 ga pistol grip short barrel pump loaded up with magnum shotshells) in our car?? Or are we limited to a handgun?
Told to me by an officer of the law: what manner of reactive confrontation does a hot burglar or home invader fear most? A woman with a shotgun. That why the wifey is checked out and totally comfy with the System.

No idea myself; you’ll have to contact officials there. You can probably call the Texas Department of Justice and have them send you a packet of information there. I know that Texas is pretty lenient on firearms carry, except for the strange exception that open carry isn’t allowed. In my state, open carry is permissible without a permit.
I’ve never thought of handguns as “limited” versus shotguns. I’d rather have something a little more portable myself.

In much of the Southwest (Arizona and New Mexico) you don’t need to have a permit to carry a gun. You can carry openly, which I often do.
Your vehicle, in New Mexico, is considered an extension of your home, so you do not need a permit to have a firearm concealed in your car. In Arizona, a firearm in a holster is not considered concealed in your car if it is in the glove box or map pocket, or other storage compartment.
