Environmental activists get a shock in Vt.

BRATTLEBORO, Vt. -- Activists opposed to development planted flowers and herbs in a gentle protest that stretched through the night. In the morning, when they refused to leave a vacant lot where a truck stop has been proposed, things got ugly. The protesters were Tasered by police.
"It was torture," said Janisse Ray, one of the protesters, who witnessed Jonathan "Slug" Crowell and Samantha Kilmurray being shocked.
Police acknowledged that they used the devices Tuesday, but said they had to use them to get the protesters to move.
"There was no other choice," said Captain Steven Rowell, a police spokesman.
Rowell said it was the first time officers in the town, which is known for its outspoken activists, have used Tasers against protesters. The action was in line with the department's policy on the use of force, he said.
Police Chief John Martin has said he will investigate, but has stood behind his officers.
About 20 activists brought trowels and seedlings Monday to a strip of Route 5 lined with big-box stores, to protest what they feel is a creeping commercial assault on the town.
A few, including Crowell and Kilmurray, both 32, stayed all night. When police arrived in the morning, they arrested the couple, but found that they had chained themselves to a steel barrel.
The barrel was rigged so that the pair could release themselves, but police needed tools they did not have to remove them.

Crowell and Kilmurray, both from New Jersey, describe themselves as professional activists and educators, though neither is employed. They said they plan to transform the experience into a piece of political street theater.

“Activists opposed to development planted flowers and herbs in a gentle protest that stretched through the night. In the morning, when they refused to leave a vacant lot where a truck stop has been proposed, things got ugly. The protesters were Tasered by police.”
ROFLMAO. Deep Fried Hippie anyone? LOL!
What a bunch of fools.
They are religious fanatics.
Of course, they're unemployed. They're professional bums.
“Help! Help! I’m being repressed!”
Every time I read that section of the story I just smile more....
“....things got ugly....” Chances are most of them were ugly before any of this started.
I have the same love and admiration for hippies as South Park’s Cartman.
They could have pepper bombed them.
Just lob a pepper bomb fogger or twenty into the midst of them, then hose them down as they run.
I’d have paid money to watch that one..
Oh dear, LOL. I don't think this is a good idea.
It was a work week day, don’t they have a job.
Oh wait, they survive on the back of those of us who work for our money.
Sounds like amateurs to me.
Something is missing from the description. The many left-wing activists I have encountered invariably call themselves "poets and artists" as well as activists.
I wonder if it ever occurs to these "professional activists" that if they got jobs, worked hard, and saved their money, they might be able to buy the land and prevent its development?
A cattle prod would have been more effective
“I have the same love and admiration for hippies as South Parks Cartman.”
Eric Cartman is hilarious.
It was a work week day, dont they have a job.
Oh wait, they survive on the back of those of us who work for our money.
Greedy capitalist pig./s\
;0)
“I wonder if it ever occurs to these “professional activists” that if they got jobs, worked hard, and saved their money, they might be able to buy the land and prevent its development?”
But you can’t like, OWN the Earth, man. That would be like buying your Mother, dude! What a bummer.
(hippie sarcasm)
“The protesters were Tasered by police.”
Good. They should have shocked them twice.
Isn’t someone usually tortured in order to extract information? This was a pain compliance technique that police use all the time. Torture?
“May I suggest using your nightstick, officer?” - Eddie Murphy, Trading Places
You or I may think that way. But to the "environmentalist" Capitalism is the problem (read evil) and the only possible solution is to be implemented by the state.
And well deserved torture it was.
Shocking !!! ...
So who is paying for their upkeep and travel while they're doing their 'political theater'?
Nappy Slug was sporting a big grin after being “tortured”.
“We love you Slugger!”
What happens when you cross a laser with a water hose??
Call him and ask...

“There are so many hard-working, concerned, aware and dedicated
people in this community committed to seeing a future for Vermont
that continues it’s long tradition of a rural, peaceful landscape
and a good quality of life,” said Sam Kilmurray also locked down at
the site, “ We are part of a much larger, and broader movement
working to see that proposals like the future of this land take into
account everybody’s concerns for the future of our community. A
public garden is one option, a beautiful option, but there are many
others, and none of them include a truck stop, a box store, a strip
mall or another fast food chain.”

Many of those I have met have more money than you'd imagine, but that doesn't mean they will put their money where their mouth is... other people are supposed to bear that burden, now that they have theirs.
“But you cant like, OWN the Earth, man. That would be like buying your Mother, dude! What a bummer.”
Hippy sarcasm? “Bummer” fits but nothing else does.
Not my quote, but I agree with you anyway.
