Terrible news. The newscasters reporting this are barely able to hold it together.

Sad, but inevitable.
Live broadcasts of police chases just encourage a certain class of moron to lead one of his/her own, with all the resulting chaos and danger.

So instead of the TV audience getting to see a high speed car crash (let’s face it, that’s why they broadcast this crap), they get to see a helicopter crash...

So, in an effort to continue to sell advertising spots on the local news, four people in the hire of TV news bought the farm while trying to get shots of some cops chasing some miscreant.
I don’t know whether to be saddened, or to laugh.

And the other news choppers following the chase provide the live coverage. There’s something disturbingly hilarious about the whole thing, they all follow these car chases hoping for blood anyway, the reporters actually providing the blood is a punchline you can only get in reality. Prayers for the families, and a stern look to the others in the car chase profession (and the “news” organizations that encourage it), we all knew this was going to happen eventually.

The two copters were operated by Valley television news stations KNXV-TV (Channel 15), the local ABC affiliate, and KTVK-TV (Channel 3), which is unaffiliated with any network. It's undetermined how many people were on board the craft and whether there are any survivors
This is harsh...I watch KTVK (channel 3) every morning and now I'm wondering if it's the same helicopter guy I see all the time?

If I had it my way, I would put NBC, CBS, CNN, MSNBC, and the NY Times out of business (and I just threw the NY Times in there for kicks).
They allow the sensationalism of these car chases and we all knew something like this would happen one day.
How about we just let the Police do their job? How about we stop showing people how to be a sensationalist? How about we bury the media because it needs to be?

Well, I sure am sorry to hear of this. The live video of the chopper going down with the reporter screaming as they plunged in was horrifying.
Still, I gotta say that I think that the Phoenix DA would have a hard time making a case before me if I were sitting on a jury that the fleeing suspect was responsible for the deaths of negligent onlookers far from the scene. I fully agree with charging them in the injury or deaths of anyone killed by the suspect or law enforcement during the apprehension, but it doesn't sit quite right with me about charging the suspect with murder for a distant TV helicopter crash.
What a weird precedent that would be. What if the suspect had been apprehended and sitting in the back of a police cruiser headed to jail and one of those helicopters ran out of fuel on the way back to the heliport thereby crashing and killing the crew? Would the suspect be guilty of murder then?
It's quite a stretch, I'm afraid to say. I'm not sure what to think of all this, and in cases where I'm not sure I'm not typically willing to endorse gymnastics in logic. It's just not particularly clear cut.
To: Milwaukee_Guy
I heard they were considering charging the driver in the chase with these deaths. Unbelievable if the DA does.
That is like charging him with the death of someone who has a heart attack watching the chase on tv.
