Phoenix Two helicopters collided in midair and crashed while covering a police pursuit in central Phoenix Friday afternoon, killing at least two people. Both helicopters were news choppers from local television stations.

....or when Michael Jackson was released. The skies looked like a swarm of big hornets had invaded the area.
Ok....I may be the first here....this is Bush's fault.
If a cop/whoever gets killed “as a result of his actions”,,,
I think that’s how they will apply the law,,,
Grace Of GOD those choppers didn’t come down on a school/?
They need an air-borne-air-controller at this rate...
Like the air-tankers over a fire...
If watchin’ a car chase is worth all that...
Blaming the perp is quite a stretch in this particular circumstance IMHO.
'Twas only a matter of time, but I always expected this sort of tragedy to go down first in L.A.
pass...
video links to the crash. Interesting watching the media covering themselves,

It's not, as I'm sure you agree. And I resent the fact that they will spend hours upon hours chasing after cops who are chasing after criminals, and neglect reporting actual news!

chicken.
Pilot killed during two-plane EAA crash
Oshkosh - Two planes collided while landing today, killing at least one person at an experimental aviation show, the Federal Aviation Administration said.
The FAA said the accident with the two P-51 Mustangs happened at 3:17 p.m. after the planes finished a performance at the Experimental Aircraft Association’s annual AirVenture show.
(sigh) Professionalism first! Are they giving pilot’s licenses to yahoos now?
i remember when this happened... Jane Dornacker used to do traffic reporting in the San Francisco Bay Area for KFRC's Dr. Don Rose segment... they were always being funny... she moved to NY... she was also an aspiring actress... she had been in a previous helicopter crash, where she and the pilot hit the water and survived... they were able to swim away from the wreckage... so when it was happening again, she told the pilot to hit the water... the second time they did not survive... it made the news here because of her earlier work on KFRC... this was very sad...
Let’s see how they dole out blame for an incident of their own making.
why on earth do so many freepers use otherwise tragic events to be dickheads?
pray tell..
that is unusual logic
Whole dang sky? It’s not quite as simple as that when one is maneuvering, especially in an urban area.
Still, this wasn’t an essential function, it was a silly car chase, and the pilots didn’t have to do what they did. They put sensationalism over professionalism, and a tragedy was the result.
A few here haven’t a clue. I wouldn’t pay them much attention.

Not Rant,,,Fact,,,
Is it gunna change ?,,,Not a chance...
Live video from the Channel 15 chopper as it went down.
Disturbing......

no kidding..
No, it likely won’t change. But this is ridiculous to put lives at risk over, not only the crew, but, as you mentioned, it could have also caused deaths of school children, if the location had been elsewhere when they crashed.
I don’t think it’s worth people dying over car chases.
Very sad.
AP/La Voz-The Arizona Republic, AJ Alexander -------------------------------- Could be this year's Pulitzer Prize photo. Did an amateur take this?
TANKS M_GUY,,,Prayers Up...
Godspeed!
LOL;0)
Police and firefighters stand near the site of a helicopter crash in Indian Steele Park.
What an awful day for their families and friends.
That was a disturbing video.
I doubt they would zoom in that much on any station. I recall watching stuff like this, and very rarely do stations zoom in enough to where you can see anybody.
For example, last year or so there was some incident in Colorado with a guy who was shot by cops on a freeway during a chase. The news didn’t zoom in very much...you saw the guy fall kind of, but that was about it....very distant.
Just like this coverage. I saw one shot that was quite close...50 feet or so away on the ground...but the rest has been far away.
One day....have you heard of pay backs????? : )
With ice cream on top ?...;0)
lolol!
“It’s” going to be a double now. : )
I agree, Donna. Very sad.
I don’t know. Time will tell.
I saw this on an old Adventures of Rocky & Bullwinkle once.
I have no idea.
Ill fated Channel 15 helicopter.
Perhaps this will also set a precident for perps to get nominated for emmy’s should the news crew be awarded for good footage...isn’t that the reasoning here?
I have to ask though, is it really necessary to have three news helicopters buzzing about for a friggen car chase?
Let the cop chopper chase them if need be.
My point was too damn many aircraft in close air-space,,,
uncontrolled...
If I had it my way, I would put NBC, CBS, CNN, MSNBC, and the NY Times out of business (and I just threw the NY Times in there for kicks).
They allow the sensationalism of these car chases and we all knew something like this would happen one day.
How about we just let the Police do their job? How about we stop showing people how to be a sensationalist? How about we bury the media because it needs to be?
1) Jealousy of celebrityhood. People love to see the noteworthy people taken down. That is, if they aren't propping them up.
2) Media hypocrisy. Anger at a news media that has a double standard between the people they cover and themselves when it comes to things like invasion of privacy and right-to-know. Add to this the constant tone of media elitisim that they know better than you do and if you disagree, you must be ignorant or biased, while they claim to always be objective and fair.
3) Tragedy overload. When the news every day is about death, dying and dire predictions, one cracks jokes to deal with the horror.
4) Gallows humor. Similar to reason 3, some feel that making jokes relieves some of the inner stress of witnessing something horrible.
That is stupid. These car chase videos are nothing more than ploy to attract more viewers. There is no need to have helicopters in the air for public safety in a car chase. They could have done it by simply listening to the police scanner and repeating back the useful information.
The key point is that the TV station had the *option* of putting helicopters in the air to cover this chase or just reporting information from the police. The cause of their deaths was their own failure to operate their helicopters correctly and maintain a reasonable minimum distance. The responsibility rests at the feet of the helicopter pilots themselves and those in the TV industry who push them on to do such stupid reporting--not on the perp even though he is undoubtedly a scumbag.
Dang. RIP, and condolences to their families.
Around 6pm, ABC15 said Molly was not on the chopper this time.
Sorry for being redundant. I was basically responing to your post #62 to let you know that Molly was not on board. I read post#87 wrong.
sorry, I don’t know how to resize.
by “whole dang sky” i was referring to the fact that the sky is much much less crowded than the traffic below making avoiding crashes ALOT easier..
...unless you are hovering around a car chase down below like a couple of mad parrots in flight..
..or perhaps a more fitting metaphor would be a couple of vultures looking out for carrion below
