Muslim workers in Neb. allege harassment

Supervisors at a meatpacking plant have fired or harassed dozens of Somali Muslim employees for trying to pray at sunset, violating civil rights laws, the workers and their advocates say.

The five- to 10-minute prayer, known as the maghrib, must be done within a 45-minute window around sunset, according to Muslim rules. The workers at the Swift & Co. plant in Grand Island say they quit, were fired or were verbally and physically harassed over the issue.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations has drafted a complaint to be filed with the federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. The petition compiles testimony from at least 44 workers who had planned to sign the complaint during a meeting Sunday. The signing was changed to a later date because of a logistical problem.

Jama Mohamed, 28, said he was fired in June for leaving a production line to pray. Supervisors would not allow him a break, he said.

"Some of them took the (prayer) mat from me; they started shouting, they started telling me to stop it, and one of them grabbed me by the collar of my shirt," Mohamed said through an interpreter.

"I was crying at the time this was happening to me, and when I finished I told them while they were doing that I was in the middle of a prayer."

Mohamed said he was then called to an office, where a supervisor fired him.

Until recently, my company employed a Muslim who would disappear three times a day, for an hour and a half at a time. People needed to interact with him to get their work done and when he disappeared, work slowed or stopped. It turns out he was driving to a local Mosque to pray (or build bomb, who knows). Things are much better now that he has been replaced.

If you are running a production like, how do you schedule a 5 to ten minute break at a time that can change as the time of sunset changes? In some jobs, that won't matter. In other jobs, it does matter. I'd like to see what Muslim-owned businesses, that have a production line like this do? Oh, I'd also like to see what Muslim management would say, if I need to take time off for prayers or to hug trees to thank Gaia.

Employers are in business to make money, not to cater to a bunch of worthless scum who would stop a production line and cause the employer to lose money. If they want to work then they should do what they are told and when they are told to do it. Anything else cannot be tolerated because it affects the bottom line negatively.

The Muslims took the jobs the Mexicans lost because they were illegal. Now if they could just learn to read their Union contract they would see they are allowed only two breaks and the times for those breaks are specified in their contract with the exception of a needed bathroom break.Now I can not wait to see the out come and CAIR is not going to be happy nor are the rest of the muzzies.

The Muslims did not take jobs formerly done by Mexicans. There have been quite a few Muslims here for years. Mostly Somalis and Sudanese. I know many of them and most are very good people who are trying to assimilate. Somalia and Sudan are really nasty places to live and I don’t blame them for immigrating.

But, the prayer issue at Swift is ridiculous.
