The National Council of La Raza, which calls itself the nation's largest national Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization, hopes to increase Hispanic political power by persuading more people to vote.
That tops the agenda at the group's annual conference Saturday through Tuesday at the Miami Beach Convention Center, where Democratic presidential candidates Sen. Hillary Clinton and Sen. Barack Obama are expected to be big draws.
"We believe a top priority is for us to integrate Latinos into the political process," said National Council of La Raza spokeswoman Lisa Navarrete. "That begins with getting all those eligible to start the naturalization process to start the process, and then those eligible to vote registering to vote, and those registered to vote out and voting."
Navarrete said there are about six or seven million Hispanic permanent residents who are eligible for citizenship.
"That could come close to doubling the Latino vote overnight," she said.
But there are obstacles. Younger, poorer and less educated Hispanics are less likely to vote and some immigrants do not want to give up ties to their home countries by naturalizing, Navarrete said.
Backlogs in the naturalization process also slow down the effort to increase Hispanic voters, as will increasing costs, Navarrete said.
At the end of July, the processing fee for citizenship applications will rise to $595 from $330. On Saturday, the National Council of La Raza will hold a free naturalization workshop for anyone who wants to begin the application process.
Once they become citizens, however, the next challenge is to get Hispanics to actually register and vote. Navarrete said the Hispanic vote is "up for grabs." In 2004, 40 percent of Hispanics voted for President Bush, she said.

Voting fraud alert - Democrats + La Raza
Democrats DEPEND on the illegal voters....and NO law to require ID’s will ever occur, as they (Dimbulbs) always play the race card, scream “disenfranchisement”, “it hurts old people”, etc., to make sure no Federal ID is EVER going to stop the dead, illegal, multi-vote minorities, etc. to stop voting straight “D” ticket.
It’s frustrating that a public La Raza function doesn’t get the same kind of coverage that a KKK rally would. In nature they are very much the same.
As an American I'm all for more people becoming involved in the democratic process. It's good thing.
‘eligible for citizenship’
Hmmmm. Got some ‘splaining’ to do with that comment La Crapa.
Silly question, of course, but if the first three words in "Consejo Nacional de La Raza" routinely appear in English, why in the hell don't the last two??
No, it’s not, it’s a drive to elect people that will give them amnesty. There’s nothing “democratic” about La Raza.
La Raza = the Race, theirs.
“This article is simply about a drive to get more hispanic’s eligible to vote legitimately.”
Legals? Kind of like what happened in Los Angeles and Orange County, CA you mean? Where it was proved that illegals in large numbers voted?
Print the ballots in ENGLISH! That’ll fix ‘em!
Legals? Kind of like what happened in Los Angeles and Orange County, CA you mean? Where it was proved that illegals in large numbers voted?
If that happened it is wrong.
I am however talking about the article posted above.
That's your opinion and that's fine.
I was however addressing the article posted above.
And I find nothing in the article to support your claims nor anything wrong with it at all.
Big deal.
Ohhhhkay....then what DOES “La Raza” mean? Gotta keep those claims supported, ya know....
uhhhhh... lemme guess....the RACE?
OMG! OMG!
What does that mean, though - like a track event?
Creo que si.

Muzlims want to overwhelm Europeans by out breeding them and immigration
La Raza type Hispanics want to overwhelm native born Americans via illegal immigration and out breeding “whitey” and Blacks. Hispanics look down, look way down on native born Blacks
