It is one of the great, dark, evil lessons, of history.
A country — a government — a military machine — can screw up a war seven ways to Sunday. It can get thousands of its people killed. It can risk the safety of its citizens. It can destroy the fabric of its nation.
But as long as it can identify a scapegoat, it can regain or even gain power.
The Bush administration has opened this Pandora’s Box about Iraq. It has found its scapegoats: Hillary Clinton and us.
The lies and terror tactics with which it deluded this country into war — they had nothing to do with the abomination that Iraq has become. It isn’t Mr. Bush’s fault.
The selection of the wrong war, in the wrong time, in the wrong place — the most disastrous geopolitical tactic since Austria-Hungary attacked Serbia in 1914 and destroyed itself in the process — that had nothing to do with the overwhelming crisis Iraq has become. It isn’t Mr. Bush’s fault.
The criminal lack of planning for the war — the total “jump-off-a-bridge-and-hope-you-can-fly” tone to the failure to anticipate what would follow the deposing of Saddam Hussein — that had nothing to do with the chaos in which Iraq has been enveloped. It isn’t Mr. Bush’s fault.
The utter, blinkered idiocy of “staying the course,” of sending Americans to Iraq and sending them a second time, and a third and a fourth, until they get killed or maimed — the utter de-prioritization of human life, simply so a politician can avoid having to admit a mistake — that had nothing to do with the tens of thousand individual tragedies darkening the lives of American families, forever. It isn’t Mr. Bush’s fault.

If your team is playing, do you cheer for your team, or do you tell ‘em to get out of the game? Not that war is a game, but there are similarities. It is not easy to get out there and fight to win when the people who are supposed to support you are whining all the time.
I can think of a number of descriptive words to describe Keith Olberpunk and Hillary Klinton. Scapegoats isn't one of them.
Yes Mr. Olbermann is frankenstein. His Civii War analogy is very interesting if you actually think about it. The population of the United States was about 32 million and the 12,000 number he uses for one battle that Burnside commanded represented about 1/3 or one per cent of the population of the country killed in one battle. The 3600 heroes of the current conflict in a country of 300 million represent .00012 per cent of the current population or 1/300 of the figure from the civil war battle. Put in perspective, if the ratio of those who lost their lives in 4 plus years in Iraq is compared to those in the Civil War battle, would Burnside have been so livid if 384 of his troops were killed rather than 12000000?

While not really comparable, as a point of historic interest these figures hold up when looking war as a percentage of GNP as well. WWII was about 60% of GNP, Vietnam, about 15%, WOT about 1%, if that.
Think back to high school. Think back to the assembly when a person of some importance visited the school. Maybe it was a senator or congressman or the mayor.

We could have an intelligent conversation about whether the undersecretary should have sent this message, but what the undersecretary said was “I wish you wouldn’t do that” not “the entire war is your fault!!!”
Olbermann always mispresents and gets angry. If the undersecretary had said “the entire war is your fault!” Olbermann would have had a point amidst all his usual leftist slogans.
But then again, if we really were “busting schoolchildren” or having a “deaf penalty”, Emily Litella would have a point.
