Report: Iraq may have world's second largest oil reserves
World Tribune ^ | Wednesday, July 18, 2007 | staff

BAGHDAD — Iraqi oil production could double in five years, according to a new study. The report found that Iraq's oil reserves may be almost twice as much as previously estimated. The study by the U.S. consultancy IHS said another 100 billion barrels of oil reserves could be found in Iraq.

IHS said the estimate would rank Iraq as having the second largest reserves in the world, following Saudi Arabia. Currently, Iran has the second largest oil reserves in the world.

Of course they do, if they didn’t then the left would have nothing to blame President Bush on for going to war....

The left says it was all about oil.

I have always assumed that it was about oil, too. We needed to deal with the states that supported terrorism, and the obvious place to start was Iraq, so we could have access to oil if, as seemed probable, we then went on to deal with Syria and Iran.

And then there’s Saudi Arabia, which happens to be to base for terrorism all over the world. What are we going to do about that? Nothing, certainly, unless we can secure another source of oil first.

So, maybe the leftists think it would be better if Russia, Saudi Arabia, Venezuela, Nigeria, and company control the world supply of oil. But I think it’s better if we do. There, is that so bad? I’d rather trust Bush with my oil supply than Putin and Chavez.

So much oil...

OPEC run out of market before they run out of oil.

Yes they do — and let them pay in “barrels” instead of Dinars....

One way to sway public opinion back to supporting the war would be to point out that if Iran were able to gain control over Iraq’s oil, they would be paying $7 for a gallon of gasoline. People in the country are selfish enough that they would not want that to happen.

Let’s say a million barrels a day for about 50 years produced at cost+10%, that ought to do it!

If they could just get their shiite together they could be as rich as the Saudis and the Kuwaitis (and still pay their bill to us). Here’s hoping 20 years from now they are.

I notice the report says production could double in 5 years but so far all predictions of increased production have failed. I think it’s still running around 2 million barrels a day.

Actually, they will probably surpass the Saudis in Personal GDP in the near future. SA has little other than oil and agriculture (wheat).

See...that's what irritates me. If it was ever about oil then Bush REALLY eff'd up and I'm pissed. Consider this: Mexico is right next to us and Venezuela within a boat ride. If Bush was a smart capitalist looking for the biggest return on investment for his oil dollar buddies, then why oh why didn't he takeover Mexico and Venezuela???

They have LOTS of oil! It's close by, easily accessible and shipping costs are nothing compared to the middle east! It would have been EASIER, FASTER and had a much higher RETURN ON INVESTMENT to conqueor Mexico and Venezuela than Iraq. And we could've created a lot of jobs for all those illegals to stay home for too! Wow...what a solution to our energy and illegal problem.

Didn’t Pres. Carter explain in his “malaise” speech that the US has more oil in shale than Saudi Arabia? And more coal than anyone else?

I have heard that the reserves in Iraq probably are greater than those in the Gulf. This would include those under lands held by the Sunni. Now if they would just get OVER having to play second fiddle to a Shia government. But among the Arabs, pride trumps all.

I think conquering Canada makes more sense. Land access to Alaska and they are our #1 oil exporter. Plus, the French Canadians would have been pushovers ; )

Their crude is a lot more CRUDE than Iraq's lighter, sweeter crude! Lybia has some of the best crude on the planet! Venezuela's and Mexico's is much more costly to refine!

One of you oil patch dudes correct me where I'm wrong, ok?

Where is the oil industry report issued the beginning of the week?

Agreed. Like a war for oil is a bad thing. Take away the oil and see what happens. People would realize that a war for oil is justifiable and the alternative is not very pretty.

You’re correct except that the Mexican and Canadian oil, and even the Venezuelan oil, is a lot more accessible and much safer to obtain even given it’s higher refining costs.

The link says it’s breaking. I don’t know anything about the organization that released the report but they’re not the first. I even saw a report recently that said there are 1,100 billion barrels of oil in Iraq but it was issued by an Iraq organization and I was skeptical so I didn’t post it.

Yep. Imagine armed ADM executives in the cornpatch yelling 'get off our land' if city people were forced to return to agriculture and tried to go back to their grandpa's farms if we had no oil.

lol that's actually a pretty funny picture.

So what are we doing to boost production? If we had spent less time on the stupid purple fingers of these Iraqi savages, and more time on drilling and pumping, we wouldn’t be seeing $80 a barrel around the corner.

You’ve got to stabilize the country before major drilling and production efforst get under way. The elections was an attempt to do that. Oil field workers aren’t going to drill when they know they’re going to get shot at on every occasion.

It SHOULD be about oil, but we keep getting limp-wristed Prsidents named Bush who declare that it is about Democracy, as if Arabs are even capable of such a thing. Bush 41 groaned on about the poor Kuwaitis (boo hoo) in 1991, but if Kuwait exported avacados instead of oil, no one would have given two shiites about them. It's about oil, dammit, and we should say so, and end the silly posing. Moreoever, we should make it a central goal of U.S. foreign policy to remove all Arab control over the oil supply. For it is that control of oil that has given the world terrorism and the endless Arab-Israel "conflict".

Right now with the new moon earthquake knocking the largest nuke plant off line for a while, uranium is experiencing a setback. It’s still good but a harder sell than ever. Coal is good for centuries, but too many have an image of black soot covering their new SUVs.

War for oil is justified when held by a bloodthirsty dictator. I also think the Iraq War is for more than oil. We had so many reasons to free Iraq but the Liberals wouldn’t accept any number of reasons to go to war. All they needed was to see one reason not pan out and they went apesh*t.
