Why would his “base” vote for him when his policies haven’t changed?
What policy of Bush’s has changed?
Right you are, Ronald Reagan said the same thing about the Democrats when he switched parties in 1962. Some things never change.
He did? Explain how. Unlike other presidents, President Bush has kept all his promises
He should send Chertoff post haste back to NJ and let Chertoff do some hopeless task like rejuvenating the NJ GOP.
Can I abandon the part of him that supports illegal immigration and high spending, but support the part that is strong on the GWOT?
Well said Mike Gallagher.
I believe hes wrong. But I know that this good and decent man believes hes right.
So because of this issue, Im supposed to abandon my president?
You can do whatever you want pal, but AFAIC the immigration issue is so critically important that I will abandon anyone of either party who wants to allow the destruction of our nation by the foreign invasion that has been underway for the last several decades. We sit here and worry about Islamic terrorism 10,000 miles away while the nation is under attack every single night and day by an army of tens of millions of illegal aliens.
Bush may "feel" in his heart that his support for illegal immigration is the right thing to do, BUT HE IS WRONG. And it doesn't matter who you are or what government position you hold, when you're wrong you're wrong.
Bush said he would never support amnesty, yet that is exactly what the Senate bill was in 2006 and 2007. Moreover, the events of 9/11 should have been a wake-up call to secure our borders and implement a system to track and deport visa overstays. Our national security is at stake.
It’s not entirely a disagreement over policy. Look at the way he has abandoned those military people who ran into PC problems in Iraq. And those Border Patrol agents who he claims had a “fair” trial through his friend Johnny Sutton. GWB only stands up for Democrat liberals: he’s still trying to “win them over”.
The door does swing both ways. Immigration issue was completely unacceptable. The problem with Congress is the American people and their immoral actions electing DEMS. It is not the fault of Conservatives trying to maintain standards.
His policies have not changed. Why did you vote for someone you disagreed with?
We have not abandoned him. We’ve just corrected a mistake.
It is not possible to defend GWB by citing the failures of Ronald Reagan, because I will concede your point. Two of those more popular failures were Sandra Day O’Connor and Anthony Kennedy.
Like I said, you win, I was wrong to vote twice for GWB, and I won’t make that mistake again.
In 2000 and 2004 he was the lesser of two evils, that doesn’t mean that we were all comfortable with his positions on certain issues but you EXPECT your guy to listen to HIS base and admit he’s wrong when they rise up as we did on the amnesty issue.
Instead he took an arrogant “don’t you know who I am” stance and as a result has alienated the only friends he had.
He has made his bed and then wet himself in it. The time has come to let him lie in it until he makes amends.
Well said DevSix
The problem is he is not strong on the war on terror, just stubbornly ignoring the open borders that can provide openings for terrorists. He’s drinking water from a glass with a hole in it.
Yes, it IS a disagreement over policy.
Almost every thread here on FR becomes a place for psuedo conservatives to claim that even though they voted for Bush twice and even though his policies haven’t changed, they are now bashing him just like liberals and the media.
You cannot claim that Bush’s policies have changed when they have not changed.
You cannot claim that you voted for Bush and supported his policies when you cast your vote, but now that DUmmies and others are bashing him, well, you have to bash him too.
Bush was always one to work across the aisle. That hasn’t changed.
Sadly, VERY sadly, the ones who have changed are some Americans.
Those with the patience of a three year old.
I don’t think he has ever changed his mind about anything. I initially admired his steadfastness, but it is obviously a double-edged sword - he also won’t back down even if he knows he is wrong.
It may be that GWB’s amnesty is more about “cheap labor” for his friends than anything else at all.
