Don't be a hero, Johnny Johnson's mom begged her 28-year-old son in a phone call Wednesday morning as gunfire exploded in the background.
...
But armed with outrage and a 9mm Smith and Wesson, her 6-foot-5, 260-pound son didn't wait to see what the people who kicked in his family's front door wanted.
"I was the first person to shoot. I guarantee that," Johnson told the Times-Union later.
Surprising one of the intruders in a hallway, he squeezed the trigger as he tried to understand: "Why are these guys in my house" and "which one of these guys is shooting at me?"
After the gunfire exchange, the intruders fled, one while suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Police believe Jonathan River Comas, 24, of Jacksonville was the intruder who was shot. They said Comas was at Shands Jacksonville hospital in critical condition.
...
"I'm in the right. Because it's either me or them," he said while waiting for police to let his family back in their home. "... You got a right to protect yourself in Florida."
And while Johnson gave his mother a scare, when it was over, police agreed.

He works as a landscaper but took college courses in criminal justice and has thought about becoming a federal marshal. To my mind, this incident should reflect positively on his job application, if he ever goes for that federal marshal job.
And likely leaving this guy crapping into a bag for the rest of his life.
It was a real shoot out. Doesn't the shot before entering hint at them being high on drugs to begin with?
Home invasion robberies are terrible crimes. Hopefully more and more of these type of robbers will get filled full of lead and the practice will die down.
I know I will empty my first magazine on some dirtbag that comes into my home and threatens my family. There will be no discussion, just shooting.
He is the perfect Marshal candidate, big and brave.
You have the right to protect yourself anywhere in the world... however, a few people want to restrict that right.
Don't you hate it when that happens!

In my case, the first guy through the door is going be on the receiving end of at least two or three 00 buck rounds from the Saiga-12. That leaves seven or eight rounds in the stick magazine, and there’s another mag clipped to that one.
Don't be a hero, Johnny Johnson's mom begged her 28-year-old son in a phone call Wednesday morning as gunfire exploded in the background.
Still stuck in the front lawn was a placard from the alarm company whose security system blared a warning and alerted the Sheriff's Office when the intruders burst in the front door and woke up Johnson about 9 a.m.
Was he on the phone with his mother while he was asleep? When he was awakened by someone kicking in his door did he call his mom on the phone first thing while he was getting his gun to investigate? Did having a phone in one hand while he was shooting with the other affect his aim?

Maybe an infection will save the taxpayers from having to pay for a trial and incarceration.
Apparently not much. Pretty good gun control.
What is that? Some kind of auto-loading shotgun? I think I want one of those for the house - I’m tired of hearing how a guy takes four or five hits and then runs away.
I don't know, the guy was taken to the hospital rather than the morgue.
We know it has to be a super clean case for that to happen...
They should farm him out to a Cuban hospital to increase his chances.
It’s an AK-47 (well, AKM) based semi-auto shotgun.
Combines the best of both worlds - AK reliablity, plus being a shotgun the AK’s notorious inaccuracy isn’t a problem. Made in the Izhmash AK factory in Russia, feeds off a 5 round magazine as imported, 10 round US-made magazines are available, 19/20 round drums are on the market or available RSN.
They used to be a lot cheaper, now they’re around $500. And they’re giving the traditional shotgunners fits on the skeet and three-gun-match fields.
Good for him.

The hero in the middle with his mother and brother-in-law.
Good shootin', Tex! Give him a medal. He probably saved his own life and others as well.
$500? That’s it? And I thought I got my M590A1 for a bargain...
Yup.
The Benelli guys all hate us. Especially those of us that bought them early, when they were $239.
Very nice weapon!!
I’m here in California so my weapon choices are less. But the short barreled Remington 870 I have holds 7 shots and it is filled with 3” OOO copper plated buckshot. It will make a fairly persuasive impression on any intruder. And I’ll still have my Glock Model 22 in reserve if need be.
At shotgun range, is an AK’s inaccuracy any kind of problem anyway?
Considering you can reliably hit out to 100 yards with a shotgun? Yes.
AKs are bullet hoses.
I find it very difficult to believe that an AK is not capable of reliably hitting a target at 100 yards.
That’s worse accuracy than the old Brown Bess.
Thank you for the Excellent Articles you Post! And Anyone Busting Into my Home will Come Face to Face with my .38 Revolver.
You’ve not seen old ComBloc assembled AKs, have you?
On some of them, it’s not possible to zero the sights as they are so far off. And then there’s barrel whip and sloppy assembly, etc. The Soviets taught that the AK was an area-effect-use weapon, not marksmanship.
There are ways to get an AK accurate, but the design itself was never intended as a tack driver (like the AR-15 was).
The Soviets favored volume over accuracy, we went the other way.

There, it corrected now :-)
My father in law, T. Kelly, bless his dear departed soul, would appreciate the joke---
That is one BIG guy. I wouldn’t want to tangle with him even if he wasn’t armed and a good shot...

“Alert resident shoots gate crashing thugs, kills 1”

When a pair of interlopers at a party in East Memphis left, then returned wearing gloves, one resident became suspicious and got his pistol.
And when the two men announced a holdup and demanded money and valuables, both were shot by their intended victim.
One was killed.
The second suspect remained in stable condition Wednesday at the Regional Medical Center at Memphis.
Multiple shots with a 9mm and the guy managed to get away. The boy needs to upgrade.
I like this guy. Shoot first. Ask questions later. :-)
The police switched from the reliable .357 to the 9mm and the shots fired count soared along with the criminals being more likely to survive.
When you gotta shoot, shoot, don't talk.
Anyone breaks in here they’ll meet my Benelli loaded with #1 buckshot and 1oz. slugs, and if they get past me the Mrs. is pretty handy with her .38.
I HAVE A REMINGTON 1187,HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
The Benelli is a great shotgun. I went with the Remington becuase it was cheaper and held 7 rounds, but the Benelli is REALLY smooth.
I will be getting an M1a real soon. It’s just about the best weapon you can still get in California.
"Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached." - Manuel II Palelologus
Awright!!! Hats off to Johnny Johnson!!
Unlike Philly, Jacksonville blacks can still arm themselves against the predators.
I wish I could still live in California (originally from the high desert area), but the gun laws there are just one of the reasons I don’t.
“...but the gun laws there are just one of the reasons I dont. “
And they are one of the reasons I am seriously considering leaving. Idaho, Montana, and Texas are on my short list if I do leave.
I know the High Desert well. I did two tours at Edwards AFB. It gets hot there, but it is a pretty nice location if heat doesn’t bother you.
That makes more sense, though if I were in a situation like that I doubt I would pick up the phone and call anybody other than perhaps 911. I would be reloading and making sure I cleared the house of intruders before I started making calls.
