Toddler Was Denied Shower Access as Well:

A couple says their vacation was ruined when an RV park owner told them they weren't welcome after discovering their 2-year-old foster son had the HIV virus. Last week, Dick and Silvia Glover went to the Wales West RV Park in Silver Hill, Ala., with their foster son Caleb. When the boy was banned from using the pool and showers, the Glovers said they were offered an uncomfortable and painful choice: They could either keep Caleb out of the water or leave.

Although the parents should probably not have mentioned the child’s condition if they didn’t want a negative reaction, the attitude of the park owner is stunning. Does he think that everyone with AIDS or HIV announces their status before jumping into the pool? He and his guests have probably swam with other folks with HIV and just didn’t know it.

A couple of days ago my daughter’s swim team cancelled their daily workouts when a tyke getting a lesson in the shallow end had an “accident” in the pool.

Someone should post a pic of the Snickers Bar scene from Caddy Shack.

Oh, ugh. Apparently the foster mother here ran her mouth about the child’s HIV status, and the owner of the place told her he needed some documentation about safety before letting the child use common facilities. Offended by the request, she then went to the media to air her grievance.

Not buying it. How did these people at the RV park happen to find out that this baby has AIDS?

For many reasons I don’t think we’re hearing the truth of this story.

In fact, the matter came up in a casual conversation with a desk clerk when she told the attendant of her plans to adopt the toddler.

The truth of the matter is revealed sometime later in the article. The woman talks too much and offered up information that created a problem where none existed previously.

Madam, would you like some salt to go with your foot, might make it taste better.

Sorry to sound cruel, but I wouldn't let my kid anywhere near a pool with a kid with HIV. The health of my child comes before the emotional wellbeing of the infected, or his parents.

It's not the child's fault it got HIV, it's not my fault to not want anything to do with it either.

"OK, now I know. The foster mother disclosed it, in the hopes of garnering a lawsuit of some kind."

Undoubtedly.

Running to ABC with the story certainly reveals her motives. ABC is now trying to make this the mid-1980s, where AIDS happens randomly and to anyone, and is only prevented (prevented, mind you...) by promoting liberal sex.

What does that have to do with anything? You can only attempt to control those things you know about. Once they knew about the kid's status, they took steps to ensure safety. You can't expect them to ignore safety concerns based on the reasoning that other risks may have occurred at some other time without their knowing about it.

Neil Young’s Alabama lyrics.

Oh alabama
The devil fools with the best laid plan.
Swing low alabama
You got spare change
You got to feel strange
And now the moment is all that it meant.

Alabama, you got the weight on your shoulders
Thats breaking your back.
Your cadillac has got a wheel in the ditch
And a wheel on the track

Oh alabama
Banjos playing through the broken glass
Windows down in alabama.
See the old folks tied in white ropes
Hear the banjo.
Dont it take you down home?

Alabama, you got the weight on your shoulders
Thats breaking your back.
Your cadillac has got a wheel in the ditch
And a wheel on the track

Oh alabama.
Can I see you and shake your hand.
Make friends down in alabama.
Im from a new land
I come to you and see all this ruin
What are you doing alabama?
You got the rest of the union to help you along
Whats going wrong?

It is ok for you to be cautious. The parents of the child should also be cautious. I am no doctor but I thought people with HIV or AIDS should be careful about picking up things from OTHER people. I would not want the tyke potentially swallowing pool water, etc. An infection or bug that a so-called normal person can handle can endanger someone with compromised immunity. I think.

the Glovers said they were offered an uncomfortable and painful choice: They could either keep Caleb out of the water or leave.

Or the other choice was to potentially expose others to an uncurable and deadly disease that has a lifetime of expensive and extensive treatment without their knowledge or consent.

Maybe the Glovers should be the bad guys in this story.

That's the problem, why even risk it? Why not put my child in a cage with an old tiger that hasn't bit anyone for years? Because he just might.

My heart goes out to kids and people that gets this stuff....Jesus hung out with the lepers, I probably couldn't. But after all, that's why HE was Jesus and well, I'm an uncivilized superstitious barbarian. :-)

Well, the easy way out is to carry documentation.

We were in the thumb of MI camping this weekend. We went into town with our Service Dog in training. She had on her vest with a patch stating it. She is very small (11 pounds) and training in hopes of becoming an autism or bipolar helper.

We stopped in a local pizza parlor and when we sat down, the waitress very nicely said that we could not have a dog there. I, just as nicely stated that by law she must allow service dogs. I pulled out the paper from the Department of Justice with the Service Dog rules on it. She took it to the owner and we were allowed to stay, with many apologies. I said that no apologies were needed and we had some GREAT pizza. The dog slept on the floor the entire time.

Now, had we still been asked to leave, we would have left and gone on to the eatery up the street. No reason to make waves, IMO. She is just training and none of us needed her to be safe. However, we would not have been calling the media either!

At Cracker Barrel on the way home, we were told the same and when I stated that she was a Service Dog, no problem. The women at the table behind us made it WELL known that even service dogs should not be allowed in restaurants. The waitress was so graceful about it. She said, “We have settled the litigation on the issue. Now how would you like your eggs.....” LOL! God love her. These dogs must be trained in public and she knew it.

The Glovers are good people for at a time of their lives when most have an empty nest to take on the responsibility to foster a baby with HIV. There good works will earn them a wonderful place in God’s Kingdom.

All the park owner asked for was more information from a qualified source, the child's doctor or the county health department.

Despite what the first sentence of the article states, if you read further, it is obvious that the park owner didn't say he wasn't welcome, he said that he needed more information so he could make an informed decision.

It is a tragedy that a child so young has such a horrible disease, but the world does not revolve around him, and you can't expect that everyone else will understand how HIV can or cannot be contracted. It is a relatively rare disease, and it is only prudent for a park owner to require more information before allowing the child with a incurable, fatal disease that he doesn't understand from using the facilities.

The kid's foster parents insist that everyone needs to understand AIDS better but weren't prepared to help educate people, and instead just threw a fit.

Two-year-olds do, however, pee in pools. Bodily fluids, ya know. And if the RV park owner knew the kid had HIV, allowed him to swim, and some other child was infected, guess who would be sued.

Ever been to a public pool before? Notice the cuts, scrapes and bruises on the younger set? How many times have you seen a toddler cut or scrape themselves?

If you answered No and never then you have zero knowledge in the area, and if you answered yes then you obviously care little for the other children in the area.

The pool owner did the right(non-PC) thing.

He/She has set himself up for a discrimination lawsuit that he will lose and likely cost him his park.

And liable and having to live with that decision the remainder of his days.

Some of the PC, holier-than-thou posts here would crack me up if they weren’t so sad. “You need to wear a helmet, knee pads, elbow pads and long pants to ride your bike but feel free to jump in the pool with a kid with AIDS”.

The thinly veiled Southern basing in this thread is typical as well.
