Scouts' firing range irks residents
Neighbors say clay shooting events disruptive
By Ivan Moreno, Rocky Mountain News
July 7, 2007
ELBERT - Neighbors say the Peaceful Valley Scout Ranch is anything but that. The realization came after an explosion of shotgun blasts from the camp in May, when Boy Scouts held a two-day clay shooting fundraiser.
"It sounded like Hamas had a training camp next door," said Elbert County Sheriff William Frangis, who fielded numerous calls from people who live near the ranch.
The Scouts say no one complained to them.
Although the camp has had a shooting range for rifles and shotguns for years, noise has not been an issue until now.
Neighbors say part of their frustration is that the Scouts only notified them of the event with the sound of the guns, and they never applied for permit from the county.
"They didn't talk to anyone; they just did it," said 75- year-old John Dunn, a former Elbert County commissioner and 44-year county resident who lives about a quarter mile from the Scout camp.
"The noise was unbelievable," Dunn said, adding that it was enough to scare the elk, deer, and birds in the vicinity. "We haven't seen them since."
The Scouts have planned five more fundraising events from July through August, but they're waiting for a permit from the county commissioners to continue using the clay shooting range. The commissioners will hear their case Wednesday.
But while there's a cease-fire for now, residents fear more events like the one held May 19 and 20 will not only disturb their peace but will bring down the value of their properties.

If the scouts and their range has been there for years, this might be a lot like moving next door to an airport or a gold course.
These whiners should have considered living close to a gun range before they purchased their homes...
Shotguns?
When I was in BSA, we learned on .22s.
This seems like a liberal nonsense account.
They don’t call it Rifle and Shotgun merit badge for nothing.
And for the record, there is a shotgunning merit badge offered by the BSA. The camp which Lurker Jr will be attending this month has a shotgun range for just that purpose.
L
Lol.
OK where’s that handbook...
(tossing dust-covered Estes rockets aside)
Colorado has been Californicated.
There is a rifle & shotgun merit badge - it was my introduction to shooting.
I went to 10 Mile River scout camp in upstate NY - great times. I hope to have a son or sons to participate in Scouting with!
It was my introduction to firearms, a passion to this day. I have bigger guns now but love to shoot .22 LR - it brings me back in time.
I doubt they would have complained if had actually been Hamas next door. Instead, it's those intolerant Scouts.

These Scouts better come up with five new ways to raise funds!
Anyone know if Fred Thompson was a Boyscout?
What BS ! Shotguns, particularly with clay loads, make minimal noise. This crap sort of reminds me of the Montgomery County, Md. that tried to have a guy arrested for smoking in his house, because she claimed she could smell it a couple of blocks away.
Unfortunately, the liberal left, after having ruined Kalifornia, has taken over much of the rest of the West and is in the process of trying to destroy it as well.
Freedom, we hardly knew ye.
If our youth is cheated out of the chance to learn how shoot; who will be able to defend these pisssheaded freeks from the many enemies of this nation?
Nice comparison. This guy must be gay and have it in for the Scouts to make an asinine statement like that.
Republicans need to start contributing to the Scouts, the way the leftists contribute to the ACLU.
Seriously. It’s a great program. Nothing else like it.
We need to rally behind them. There are lots of nasty leftists out there fighting against them.
If an elected official said this about what goes on in the wahhabist mosques, it'd be hate speech and President Jorge would already be publicly condemning them. But calling peaceful American shooters terrorists is just business as usual.
Have a boy who was in scouting and now he is a National Guardsman and in college ROTC studying to become a ARMY officer. He won the Excellence in Armor award in basic and is third generation ARMY.
Scouting WORKS!
The military has been dealing with this for years. It's called urban intrusion and the base usually ends up closing mostly all because the people who moved near there were too stupid to check into what was in that locale before they moved in.
Living next to a gold course would be something.
Here is one for the scout list.
Busy bodies trying to make trouble they must have very good ears to hear shotguns from that far away.
Yeah, El Torro in these parts closed down.
Also that base up by the Bay area. Don’t remember the name.
But the important thing is to start to turn around the stifling un-American, dingy dumbing down and politically correct WHINING which has made so incredible inroads on what used to be a country of optimistic individualists.
Sheesh. I’m getting so tired of leftwingers telling everyone what to do.
I’d like to go dump some tea in San Francisco harbor.
***Although the camp has had a shooting range for rifles and shotguns for years, noise has not been an issue until now.***
Sounds like people who just moved in and now want the “old-timers” to change their lives to suit them.
It’s going on all the time all over the country. Let them sue the developers who did not apprise them of the noise, or better yet, Caveat emptor should apply.
Which base was that? Moffett Field Naval Air Station? Hunters Point Naval Shipyard? Alameda Island NAS, where the carriers also docked? Presido of San Francisco? Perhaps south of SF Bay, Fort Ord? Two Air Force bases were closed near Sacramento.
Yes, Presidio, that’s the one I was thinking of.
Thanks.
There should be a Ping Merit Badge.
Who was there first?
These pissheaded freaks ARE the enemy our nation needs to be defended against.
If you make that 20 tons of Rice-A-Roni ("The San Francisco Treat") I'll join you.
You left out Hamilton Field, in Marin County.
Also, Naval Station Treasure Island ...where I did my Basic.
Big chunks of Concord Naval Weapons Station...if not all of it by now.
Where's that? I went to Camp Bedford, a long time ago.

The Sheriff speaks like a kitten.
It doesn't work that way. Almost all communities have laws on the books dealing with noise in residential neighborhoods. If the shooting range is in violation of those ordinances, then it's at fault and it doesn't matter who was there first. That's just life.
When I was a kid, we used to race motocross at a track located East of Colorado Springs. When the city grew Eastward, and the noise bothered those in new developments, the track had to close. That's just the way it works.
...and the nice neighbors can be tested for the whining merit badge, but then on second thought, they wouldn’t be “merit” badgers then would they?
BTTT
BINGO: Old Mountain Coloradans wouldn’t give a d*mn if the Boy Scouts held a shoot-out; heck many of them probably would have kids or their friends in the contests..I know I have grandparents cousins in Den, the near Evergreen, Montrose, and grew up there untill I was 8 y/old!
Sporting clays shotguns do not sound like a “Hamas training camp.” Even 100 yards away, it is just a muffled pop.
These neighbors just want to close down the range for political purposes. They hate guns and they hate the Boy Scouts.
FMCDH(BITS)
Grandfather clause!

Read the words carefully and you'll see.
Narrowsburg, NY
Yep, I shoot sporting clays all the time, if nobody is at one of the stands next to the parking lot, you can’t hear anything.
The offers were always never high enough, the offers were always above market value. The Denver Area Council BSA has for many years made offers for the property
of the J BAR CC camp adjacent to Peaceful Valley ranch.

There is the

“Raising in excess of $200,000, this year’s Sporting Clays Invitational was an unprecedented success. Held May 19th at the Peaceful Valley Scout Ranch and sponsored by Coors Brewing Company, AMG National Bank and Wells Fargo, the event boasted 31 shooting teams. The money raised during this year’s event ensures that Scouts enjoy a quality and safe experience at Denver Boy Scout properties. For more information or to participate in the 2008 event please send inquiries to sportingclays@denverboyscouts.org.”
To all in Colorado go bust some clays next year to support your boy scouts. Please note the boy scout reservation is 3000 acres not some tiny old camp in the middle of suburbia.
That pretty much sums up everything the left is against.
It gets even worse for then when they go to the 12 Points of the Scout Law. You should enjoy this link http://usscouts.org/boyscouts/jwlaw.html
