Sen. Pete Domenici delivered the latest political body blow to President Bush's war policy today, as the New Mexico Republican announced his support for a bipartisan bill calling for redeployment of troops in the first quarter of 2008.
As I wrote in the story for washingtonpost.com this afternoon, Domenici endorsed a bill that calls for implementing the 79 recommendations of the Iraq Study Group, most importantly drawing down troop size to a limited number that merely patrol the borders and work on counter-terrorism operations.
"I am unwilling to continue our current strategy," Domenici said.

yeah : )
Domenici became the fourth senior Republican in 10 days to significantly criticize the current Iraq strategy, following Sens. Richard Lugar (R-Ind.), George Voinovich (R-Ohio) and John Warner (R-Va.).Combined, those four have 103 years of senatorial experience.
That's about 100 years too many! Throw the RINO scumbags out...
Will our base shut down Domenici phone lines?
They are all up for reelection. I say find challengers.
So I guess that's how we can tell the veracity of political position, right? Just add up the combined years of experience and viola!
Unfortunately, I see Bush’s surge policy losing out in the Congress real shortly. It is simply a matter of numbers. As Bush loses more and more support, eventually the Dems will start winning those pullout votes.
The writing is on the wall for the administration’s policy in Iraq. There is not enough time to let it work out. Bush unfortunately decided to late to try a surge, something that many people were advocating years ago. Bash McCain all you want but he was a proponent of more troops way back.
Another political coward. Keeping my $ from the GOP. What a waste.
He voted for shamnesty too...
They ALL voted for shamnesty as well. True RINO’s.
LOL! To me, the number of years in office is inversely proportional to a politician's credibility.
I believe it's coming, and all this "religion of peace" tripe from our politicians is but a weak attempt to postpone the inevitable. It's not about politics or culture, it's about the perpetual conflict between evil and good, Satan and God. And in these times Satan is getting very bold, seemingly looking for a decisive battle against whatever good is left in the world.
I noticed that pattern too. Of particular interest to me (as an Ohioan) is that doofus Voinovich, who in a show of dazzling courage, "switched" his cloture vote at the last minute on shAmnestyonce it was obvious the bill was sunk!
And that was only after making a total a$$ of himself on Hannity's radio show.
Unfortunately we're saddled with this tool until 2010. But I'll gladly do whatever it takes so elect a real conservative in the primaries and help dump RINOvich when the time comes.
Won't happen if our base stands firm and has our warriors backs. Congress will get the message (especially GOP members).
Bush unfortunately decided to late to try a surge, something that many people were advocating years ago.
Rubbish - There were more soldiers in Iraq for several extended periods of time then there are now (since 03). Reality is what has been accomplished to date (with the limited loss of life) is historically amazing.
Reality is we have lost (or are losing) the PR aspect of modern warfare. We are not losing the war on the ground....and on the whole there has been tremendous progress when one puts Iraq in context.
I for one would not be so opposed.
Right on the money, DevSix...right on the money.
What our military has done over there is astounding. I guess we are going to have to wait twenty years or so before anyone gets any credit for it.
It is an absolute disgrace that it is taking so long to put Iraqis in control of their own security.
I'm also well aware, as I often remind folks in conversation, that the Crusades were merely the Western Christians' response to Islamic terrorism.
I just hope today's Europeansor whatever generation does finally heed history's callstill have enough of the fightin' spirit left in 'em. Undoubtedly, we'll need to help, and I believe we'll be ready!
A revival of passionate, devout and deeply rooted Christianity would certainly help the Old Continent more than anything else. Europeans right now don't believe in much of anything at all; and absent any entity greater than oneself, what is there in life to get excited about?
Europe needs to rediscover the Gospel and her Christian heritage in a big way. In fact, she needs to be all the more dedicated to the Good News of Christ than the mad moozies are to their death cult.
In principle, I agree with you. Fact is, we could and should have had that country pacified by nowbut instead, our leaders decided to fight a PC, touchy-feely "hearts and minds" war. And our finest and bravest have paid the price! Dips#*ts on both sides of the aisle (but mostly Dems) have failed to see victory as the ultimate goal.
It angers me no end that the Washington political class thinks they can conduct wars better than our trained, disciplined field generals and battle-hardened soldiers. That's the real disgrace. I really wish the pols would have STFU from the get-go, and let our guys do their job!
“It is an absolute disgrace that it is taking so long to put Iraqis in control of their own security.”
We should have gotten out of Iraq as quickly as we got out of Germany, Japan and South Korea.
Another anti-American TRAIOTOR and al-Qaeda supporter joins his fellow travelers in the surrender of the American people to the Islamic Terrorist. Who is running against him in the Primary in NM? I will donate my money to them just as I am supporting Jon in Nebraska. Cowards and SCUM as the RINOS show their true anti-American Colors.
"There are some veterans of the Civil War in here. They will remember how, shortly after Sumpter was fired on, a large number of enthusiastic people who were not themselves going into the army began to shout, "On to Richmond," and to say that Richmond should fall in sixty or ninety days. It took four long and weary years; and the same people who in 1861 had shouted, "On to Richmond, the war must be ended at once", in 1862 wished to declare the war a failure and voted to abandon it because it had not been ended at once. Perhaps some of the older gentlemen remember that, don't you? Exactly. The hope of the nation then lay, not with the men who expected the immediate impossible, nor yet with the man who was cowed and did not believe that you could put the war trough, but with the man who recognized the difficulty of the struggle, who, recognized that they had a most stubborn gallant enemy to fight, and who went in and enlisted for a three years' war and saw the war through."
Maybe I missed it, but where is the administration’s quick witted response? We need a Lincoln but have a Bush.....
I support this war, but it must be constantly sold. (by the way, just because Bush seems incapable of using the bully pulpit at all, does not mean we should not be there - therein lies the dysfunctionality of our current national debate). Tony Snow is only a Press secretary and the press is treasonous.
Warner has been wobbly on Iraq for 2yrs now.
Well said.
Good analysis, and great blog! Thanks for the link :)
