US Senate to open with Hindu prayers
Times of India ^ | 27 June 2007

Posted on 07/04/2007 1:28:03 PM PDT by Coleus

History will be created when a Hindu prayer will be recited at the opening of the US Senate in Washington DC on July 12.

Rajan Zed, a Hindu chaplain, said that he had been officially asked to say the prayer. He said he believes this may be the first time any Hindu prayer is delivered in the Senate since its formation in 1789.

Zed is likely to choose the prayer from the Rig Veda, the Upanishads and the Bhagavad-Gita. He said he plans to start and end the prayer with 'Om', the mystical Hindu syllable. The full text of the prayer will be included in the Congressional Record.

There are an estimated two million Indian Americans in the US.

Followers of Hindu groups like ISKCON may add up to another one million.

“July 12 will be an illustrious day for all Americans and a memorable day for Indian Americans when prayers from ancient Hindu scriptures will be read in the great hall of democracy,” Zed said.

Yes, but how big is the Congressional Hindu Caucus? Does it even have one member?

Yeah, well, whatever. Have any Hindus piloted civilian aircraft into any of our skyscrapers, or planted any IEDs to kill or main our marines?

“[When] the [Virginia] bill for establishing religious freedom... was finally passed,... a singular proposition proved that its protection of opinion was meant to be universal. Where the preamble declares that coercion is a departure from the plan of the holy author of our religion, an amendment was proposed, by inserting the word “Jesus Christ,” so that it should read “a departure from the plan of Jesus Christ, the holy author of our religion.” The insertion was rejected by a great majority, in proof that they meant to comprehend within the mantle of its protection the Jew and the Gentile, the Christian and Mahometan, the Hindoo and infidel of every denomination.” —Thomas Jefferson: Autobiography, 1821. President Bush Attends Iftaar Dinner at the White House

“America is a land of many faiths, and we welcome and honor the Muslim faith in our nation. Our society is enriched by our Muslim citizens. Your commitment to your faith reminds us all of the precious gift of religious freedom in our country. America is a more hopeful nation because of the talents and generosity and compassion of our Muslim citizens.”

Absolutely, two Pakistans were partitioned off because Hindus distrusted the ROP long before it came on the map so to speak in this country.

To show how tolerant and accepting we are of any religion ... other than Christian.

I thought there was talk not all that long ago about getting rid of the Senate chaplin position. Now it's back in vogue I guess.

I guess he thinks if he keeps saying nice things about Islam, they won’t try to attack us again.

It’s OK to say Hindu prayers in Congress but it’s not OK to mention God in the Pledge of Allegiance? I smell hipocrisy...

Actually I’m surprised...I would’ve thought the prayer would be said in Spanish.

Me too, and I am praying to the ONE TRUE and ONLY GOD... the GOD of Heaven and Earth, to intervene and hear our prayers to STOP this in its' tracks.

If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.

“Hindu chaplain”—Is there such a thing in the Hindu religion?

From Wikipedia:
United States Navy Chaplain Corps

The Chaplain Corps of the United States Navy consists of ordained clergy who are commissioned Naval officers. They serve not only in the Navy, but in the United States Marine Corps and United States Coast Guard as well.

Navy Chaplains “promote the spiritual, religious, moral, and personal well-being of the members of the Department of Navy.” They share in the difficulties and rewards of Navy life. The Chaplain Corps consists of clergy endorsed from ecclesiastical bodies, providing assistance for all sailors. Navy Chaplains come from a variety of religious backgrounds including, but not limited to: Orthodox, Protestant, Catholic, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist and Hindu. They are assisted by United States Navy enlisted personnel in the Religious Programs Specialist (RP) rating.

What about Wiccans, there has to be a few million of them running around praying daily. The Republic has clearly lost it Judeo-Christian way with Bush leading the way.

Where are all the brave Christian men in the Senate standing up against this? Must the country founded on Judeo Christian ideals give equal deference to every religion under the sun just so it can survive, then it's already lost it's standing.

Actually, Pakistan was partitioned off because Muslims didn't want to be in a Hindu-dominated country, not because Hindus didn't want India to stay united.

Gandhi and most other Hindus were very much against partition and only accepted it as a last resort. They may have lucked out.

Better Hindu than Muslim.

Well, they don't want to put the cart before the horse, do they??...One might ask themself why they're doing a Hindu prayer first rather than a Muslim one, being that they have the first Muslin Rep in the house. Ultimately they want the 'Ali Akbar', but they know they can't do it without some precident first, to temper that public outcry that would be due.
