New York City will continue searching for remains of victims of the September 11 attacks indefinitely, with authorities saying they will not be able to finish the task in one year as planned.
Bits of human remains continue to turn up more than five years after hijackers crashed two jet airliners into the World Trade Centre, killing 2,759 people including themselves.
Remains have still not been found for all of the victims.
Surviving relatives say it helps with their grieving to know that some physical remains have been recovered.
Edward Skyler, New York's deputy mayor for administration, told Mayor Michael Bloomberg in a report that the city medical examiner's office would continue to sift through excavations in areas surrounding the crash site.
"Due to the additional material that needs to be excavated and sifted, the one-year goal for this operation is no longer attainable," Skyler wrote.
"In fact, our experience over the last nine months and the ongoing rebuilding of the World Trade Centre will continue in one form or another for the foreseeable future."
The former World Trade Centre site and surrounding areas are now a construction zone, with four skyscrapers in the works.
In addition a former bank building just off the site where some remains have been found is being demolished to make way for a new office tower.
In all 2,992 people died in the 2001 attacks in New York, Virginia and Pennsylvania.
They’ll be finding human remains indefinitely if they continue the search.
Also,during my last visit I made it a point to walk down a little side street on the perimeter (Liberty Street?) and came across a small fire station there.I talked for a few minutes to several of the firemen about that day...they told me that they lost something 6 or 8 firemen from that little station.
Dasher,that's the Deutche Bank Building I referred to in my previous post.It didn't collapse (even though it was *very* close to the towers) but it was so badly damaged by debris that it was determined that it couldn't be repaired.A few months ago they found human remains on its roof.Like I said....spooky.

I also recall that it had some big chunks of its lower facade gouged out by the falling crown of WTC 2, which fell into the street.
The fire alarms supposedly sounded for days and everything got soaked, but that didn't stop someone from walking through and picking up the abandoned laptops.
I don't know...it's certainly possible.What I do know is that not that long ago they found fragments of human bones on the roof.

Although I'm not certain I thought I read that the main reason why the Deutche Bank Building was declared unsalvageable was because the foundation was found to have been too badly damaged by the earthquake-like shaking of the ground caused by the actual collapse of the three large buildings (WTC-1,WTC-2 and WTC-7) very close by.This shaking,I read,showed up on many seismograph machines worldwide (it was that strong).
The damage you spoke of may well also have occurred but I didn't notice it because any time I've seen the building it's been completely surrounded by scaffolding.
