Questions on Romney-Marriott pornography connection "could get traction in...the South"
MSNBC News ^ | July 3, 2007 | Mark Murray, NBC Deputy Political Director

---

ROMNEY: CBN's Brody reports on an issue that could get traction in evangelical circles in the South: "Some anti-pornography groups are demanding answers as to how much presidential candidate Mitt Romney knew about the Marriott hotel chain's profits of pornography sales during his nearly ten years on the Board of Directors in the 1990s. The hotel chain is one of many that offer pay-per-view sex videos for sale through in-room entertainment."

I’m a porn enabler, too, then.

I pay my ISP a monthly fee for internet access. My ISP undoubtedly profits from illicit bits passing through their routers...

....therefore, like Mitt, I must be as guilty of promoting porn as Larry Flynt...QED

C’mon folks, I don’t want Mitt for prez, but this stuff is pathetic.

I got news for you, an anti-Romney movement is going to have traction in the South, but it doesn’t have a damn thing to do with porn. It has absolutely everything to do with his choice of religious denomination.

I’ll be ripped apart for saying that, but it’s just the truth. We don’t have many Mormons down here, and for all the disagreements that religious denominations have down here, the one thing they all agree on is that there is just something about Mormonism that doesn’t sit right. And I’m describing the metro areas here. Go into the country, and just imagine that effect amplified.

Doesn’t have a damn thing to do with pornography, and in fact, you may be the only person I know of who is opposed to Mitt because he’s a “porn merchant”

That being said, I believe that these continuous attacks by this thread poster and others like him/her are just blatant anti-Mormonism.

And no, I am not a Mormon. Get off your high horse AFA.

“You may be the only person I know of who is opposed to Mitt because he’s a ‘porn merchant’...

That’s because you don’t sit in on the quarterly DC meeting of national and state anti-porn groups, Azalea. Your not knowing them has no impact on their existence, of course, nor does it limit their influence and constituencies.

But, be advised that I’m also opposed to Mitt because he spent over a decade promoting abortion on demand, endorsing “gays in the military” and just about every other element of homosexual activists’ political agenda, and promoting gun control.

Saying porn movies were partly responsible for the VA Tech shootings, after having done nothing to stop the corp of which he was a director from selling $30 mil a year of the same stuff...that’s just icing on the cake.

True, there are not as many as out west, but even though they have a "different" message, they are usually tolerated well, at least around here. I don't think Mitt's religion will play as big a part as many seem to think. Heck, he may even get a VP slot on somebody's ticket, say Thompson or other.......

I agree with you. As a southern "evangelical" I am not impressed by this kind of trash. The muckrackers get more muck on themselves than they dish out.

I'm not for Romney either, but I don't think any candidate pulls himself up by putting other candidates down. There are good reasons for supporting others over Romney, but this is not one of them.

Maybe, but I don’t think his lack of support in other areas has to do with his religion as much as his image. He lacks Rudy’s tough-guy image, and Thompson’s larger-than-life persona, and he just comes off as too slick. I know that seems petty, but many of Bush’s failures boil down to his inability to connect with people and communicate effectively. If Romney does get the nomination, I’ll back him 110%, but he’s my third choice behind Thompson and Hunter.

Following the logic out, any candidate who owns stock/sits on the Board of any company that has stores that sell, dirty magazines, condoms, sex toys or anything anyone could consider prurient shouldn't be supported. Likewise for computer companies, which aid and abet in the production/editing/distribution of porn. Oh, and the cameras and film companies that provide the medium that porn is created upon.

Good grief. We're all porn czars!

Well, I was raised in Texas, of a father from the deep south. Southern Baptist until 1970 when we (myself and my Dad and then later the entire family) joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Our relatives, our friends, our neighbors, asked many questions. They were all, as were we, good Christian folk who love Jesus Chrsit and recognize Him as ou Lord and Savior.

As time went on and they saw the fruit of our religious endeavors in the Chrtistian church of our choice, they not only tolerated us, they respected us and quite a few of them joined as well.

We're talking roots here in the deep south, Alabama and Georgia specifically. And in those areas there are many hundreds of thousands of members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, whom you refer to as Mormons. The vast majority of them are good citizens, good family people, and good followers of their Savior.

I have always found that anyone who was committed to living their life like our Savior, would give us the benefit of the doubt since our joing the Church in 1970. I found it on my mission to Germany in 1875-1977, and since throughout my life. When most discover how we live, what the point of our convictions were (that being the Atonement of Jesus Christ for us all), and our desire to emmulate Him and make Him the center of our life...they had not problem with that and respected it, despite whatever differences in other, far less important theological matters.

In the end, Jesus Christ alone saves...and that intrinisc belief is shared by all Christians and is the heart of being a Christian, including members of my faith. I will not debate it, I will not argue over it. I will simply witness it. As with any other religion though, if you want to know the true fruits and beliefs...seek out the people who are whole heartidly and with conviction living it, not thosee who have an axe to grind against it. This is not only good sense, it is a primary tennant of any investigative research into such matters.

Then, if you disagree, which many may well do, it is at least based on legitmate, straight forward information, and usually leaves both parties willing and able to at least work together for the good of our nation because of the vast, shared belief system despite whatever other differences.

Anyhow, that has been my own experience in the south and my own attempts to navigate these issues in life..

“I believe that these continuous attacks by this thread poster and others like him/her are just blatant anti-Mormonism.”

Hit the stopwatch...

What took you so long, Gator?

This is typically the FIRST tactic deployed by Romney defenders: respond to criticism of Romney’s record of support for abortion on demand or the homosexual agenda or inaction on pornography — all of which his church opposes — by falsely accusing the public policy critic of attacking the church.

Romney’s problem in a public policy context is not that he’s a Mormon, it’s that his political stands haven’t been Mormon enough, i.e., consistent with the values typically associated with the LDS Church.

Also, please note that in an article posted yesterday by the Christian Broadcasting Network, a prominent fellow Mormon refused to let Romney off the hook:

“John Harmer, president of the (Salt Lake City-based) anti-pornography group The Lighted Candle Society and the former Lieutenant Governor of California under Ronald Reagan isn’t buying it. He wants to hear more. ‘My attitude toward board members is that they are fully responsible,’ Harmer said. ‘They knew exactly what they were receiving. I don’t think any board member under any rationale could claim ignorance. You’re either a board member or not. I can’t imagine a board member going a full year and not receiving a revenue report from the company.’”

See the Brody File at:

http://www.cbn.com/CBNnews/188311.aspx

Further, in a post yesterday on Freep, I stated:

“Don’t judge the Mormon church based on Romney or Marriott.
The LDS Church this winter published a seven-part series on the damaging nature of pornography.”

Finally, unless you yourself are one, Gator, I’ve probably helped elect more members of Mitt’s church to public office than you’ve ever even met. But they were all of the pro-life, anti-homosexual agenda, anti-porn worldview that is consistent with LDS values.

Who’s next to step up to the plate with the “anti-Mormon” mantra?

I support Hunter, Thompson, and then maybe Mitt, in that order...depending on what happens. I believe, when the dust clears, Thompson has the best conservative chance.

I am cocerend about Mitts past and his "conversion" to conservative principles (abortion, gay rights, gun rights, etc.). While I want to give him the benefit of the doubt, it is still too soon for me and optimally he would need several years professing and defending correct principle. That is aside from it being between him and Rudy...or him and the likes of Hitlery or Obama in which case I would choose him over them.

This is also irrespective of our sharing the same religious faith. Heck, Ried, sadly, and I am ashamed to say, is also LDS. Look at othe religions and you will see the same...the liberals can come from all cuts of cloth, IMHO, irrespective of the basic doctrine their faiths may teach.

No, as stated in my original post, I’m not one. However, you’re wrong because I’ve known many hundreds and even attended various functions at LDS places of worship. The wife and I homeschool our children and were in an organization run by and filled with Mormons. Their worldview seems to be “live right and teach your children well”.

You write and present your ideas in an intelligent manner. I am willing to guess that you have investments, IRA’s, etc. Are any of those investments with any company who does biz with a person or entity that has viewed or invested in porn? Are you sure? It has become a ubiquitous part of our society. If one digs deep enough anyone alive could be accused of things as bad or worse than that which you assail Romney with.

The constant harping on such a non-issue seems to me to be motivated by something deeper than a disagreement with Romney’s business associations. I will admit that I could be wrong, but I seldom am.

P.S. Mormons are like anyone else. Fallible and prone to stumble, slip and fall from their self-appointed pedestal. This comes from personal observation. The higher one gets on their highhorse, the farther it is to the ground. Careful that you do not break anything when you slip out of that sainted saddle.

You haven't even brushed the surface of the Porn conspiracy. A Mormon invented TV as well. Just add in some references to "the Brethren", credit card companies, and someone wearing a 666 labels and maybe you could really get some traction. /sarc

Philo Farnsworth

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Philo Taylor Farnsworth (August 19, 1906 – March 11, 1971) was an American inventor. He is best known for inventing the first completely electronic television. In particular, he was the first to make a working electronic image pickup device (video camera tube), and the first to demonstrate an all-electronic television system to the public. In his later life, Farnsworth also invented a small nuclear fusion device known as a fusor.

Wow!!! that's one long mission. Mine was only two years ;-)

My grandfather served a mission to Germany pre-WWII. He took a picture of Hitler in a parade and the SS took his camera away. They had two police assigned to follow them to all their appointments and one night they were arrested and interrogated all night as "American spies". Ten days before the war started the Prophet called all missionaries from Europe home. (If you are Mormon It was Revealed to the Prophet by inspiration, if you are not mormon then the prophet just got a "lucky guess"). He served in the FBI durig the 5 years of the war cracking codes because of his fluency with the various dialects used in Germany.

We have a few Mormon churches here, but, they don’t go out of their way to make a public presence. My opposition to Romney has nothing to do with the fact he was Mormon

It has everything to do with the fact that he is from Massachusetts, and at one point, was so far to the left that he couldn’t have won a Democratic nomination in this state. I am also not happy about the idea that he is essentially a legacy politician. It’s the wrong message for us to send, especially if the Democratic nominee is Hillary (I don’t think it will be, but, anything is possible) to also have someone there who, it can be argued, is on that ticket because of who they are and not what they’ve done.

The reason we couldn’t get hit with this in 2000 is because we had the son of a President running against the son of a Senator. Both owed where they were in large part to who they were, so neither side could use that against one another. As much as I hate populist nonsense, this is going to be an election where people rebel against the “establishment” as they see it, and I just think Romney is not the person, backgroundwise who can fit that message.

And I am in one of the deep south states you mentioned, and in the city, out of 200,000 people, I think we have at most, 500 Mormons, and I couldn’t tell you who any of them are. Our Mormons don’t really out themselves, and I only make this estimate because I have passed by churches that I can actually identify as Mormon based on the name. Our local culture doesn’t really mesh with Mormonism.

But the point is, even if only 10% of white voters vote against the ticket because a Mormon is on it, and we assume the Republican should in normal circumstances, get 55% of the total vote, just the defection of those 10% can pose a real problem, based on the electoral map.

It’s just not a risk I want to take electorally when there are potentially two supreme court appointments at next in the next 4 years.

Each of those Church buildings probably house two wards. Each ward has about 600 members.

If the buildings are very small, then they are probably what we call branches with anything from 50-200 members each.

Anyhow, my own opposition to Mitt is based on his all too recent conversion to several critical conservative principles. I would prefer to see him hold those positions and have to defend them for a space of years first, without a major election hinging on his simplu spouting them.
