HAGERSTOWN, Md. (AP) -- The Washington County Sheriff's Office says a woman fought off a would-be robber and killed him.
It happened at an apartment on Youngstoun Court in Hagerstown around 3:30 a-m Sunday.
When Carri Humphrey opened the door, 32-year-old James Conely rushed in, hit her and pointed a rifle at her.
The second woman, Michelle Reeder, rushed into the living room with her handgun. According to court documents, she shot Conely as he moved toward her saying he would kill her.
During a struggle, Reeder stabbed Conely in the back and the two women fled. Sheriff's deputies found Conely dead in a bedroom.
A deputy responding to the call spotted 18-year-old Michael Watkins, who they say was also involved in the robbery, and arrested him.
Court document say Watkins told police he and Conely planned a robbery, but he didn't know Conely had a gun.
The women were treated at Washington County Hospital and released.

Yup, that is the way to handle that.
The accomplice didn’t know he had a gun???
It was a rifle!
Shot and stabbed him.....Must have had one of those Lazamataz Hell-Glocks with the bayonet.
Excellent headline: The writer clearly identifies the late unlamented Mr. Perp as one caught in the act of committing a violent felony, and clearly identifies the one who terminated his criminal career as the victim of his crimes.
That’s rare.
Beaten, stabbed, shot - the BST method, or maybe BeST method.
There's still a fair amount of Bubba left in Washington County, Maryland. That's just one county east of coal country.
I sent the article on to Gary Reeder Custom Guns —
He’ll be proud of his distant relative.
Whoops! Robbed the wrong apartment!
Good on yer, ladies.
TEN HUT
Ok hippie, grab yer rifle hold it over your head with one arm. Place your other on your crotch and repeat after me:
"This is my rifle; this is my gun. One if for killing, the other for fun."
It's a rifle hippy, not a gun. AT EASE.
If ignorance is bliss, the accomplice must has been in blissful heaven. Cant wait to see how some defense Lawyer works this one.
“Watkins told police he and Conely planned a robbery, but he didn’t know Conely had a gun.”
That’s the idea... :)
Maybe he had really baggy pants. I hear it’s the fashion right now.
One of my favorite true courtroom stories (which I heard direct from the judge who was presiding) is of an accused who insisted on taking the stand and told the most outrageous shaggy dog story about how he just happened to be standing at 2 A.M. in front of a busted-open cash box in the open drawer of a busted desk in an auto parts store that had been broken into . . . . when the police swooped down and arrested him.
The ADA looked at him scornfully and asked, "Mr. Doe, do you expect this jury to believe that story?"
The accused gave him a quizzical look and replied, "Well, it could possibly be true."
The ADA cracked up, the court reporter spilt her coffee, the bailiff had his head down on the table sobbing, the jury was having hysterics, and the judge had to pretend to drop a pencil to get his head under the bench to have his laugh out.
Yeah, they convicted him. I hope the judge gave him points for creativity in sentencing though.
LOL! Great story, thanks.
But whenever anybody gets in trouble, the first thing they want is a GOOD lawyer . . . .
Most hate cops until they need them!
(Actually, our current jurisdiction is very good on response time. Time we called them on something, they were here in 3 minutes apologizing for not being here sooner. But Atlanta proper is a different story. When my father SHOT A BURGLAR, IN OUR HOUSE, back in the late 60s or early 70s, the City of Atlanta police took almost an hour to show up. Guess they figured there was no hurry, dad had the situation under control!)
That’s the first thing I thought also. Refreshing!
“I hope for her sake that the handgun was registered, to either her or her roommate.”
In Maryland, one can carry a handgun on one’s home or business property without a permit. There is no registration of handgun requirement because police make a record record made of purchases from dealers.
That *is* the registration I meant. You can't legally purchase a handgun without a registering it. Since 2002 a state approved safety course is required to make such a purchase. I couldn't find any information about how accessible those courses are, but it would be the simplest thing to not certify any courses but those taught by the state, and then only hold them once a quarter for a class of 20 or so. I know it's not that bad, yet that is, but the potential is there.
I don’t know if you guys have followed up more on this story but those girls have spun a hell of a tale, from my understanding the rifle was never found.
