Eighteen months after the sarcophagus believed to have once contained the remains of St. Paul the apostle was positively identified by Vatican archaeologists, Pope Benedict XVI has given his approval to plans by investigators to examine the interior of the ancient stone coffin with an optical probe, according to a German Catholic paper.

As WND reported in 2005, the sarcophagus was discovered during excavations in 2002 and 2003 around the basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls in south Rome.

"The tomb that we discovered is the one that the popes and the Emperor Theodosius [A.D. 379-395] saved and presented to the whole world as being the tomb of the apostle," said Giorgio Filippi, a specialist with the Vatican Museums.

The excavation was conducted after the administrator o

As much as I dislike the defiling of graves, this does seem interesting.

Why don’t they just open it up like they did the tombs in Eqypt?

Maybe they want to keep it really respectful so no one riots? He’s one of my heroes, so I wouldn’t be too happy if it were really his remains and they treated them like a lab rat.

At the very least, as this event unfolds it will help spread the story of Saul/Paul (and his transition from wretched monster to a saint). I suspect most here on earth have never been taught it, and it is a valuable story of redemption indeed.

Maybe some will be inspired to turn their life over to Christ. Every little bit helps!

I would hope because he is a Christian icon worthy of the highest form of respect.

“Secrets of the Tomb”....is much more intriguing. Then the archeologists can “speculate” forever....Like the Shroud of Turin.

He’s one of my heroes too. But if they can get at the tomb I don’t see why they don’t just open it up. Perhaps the lid is partially buried under rock and the building.

The Pope should be shrewd enough to not allow secularists to study the remains in the tomb, because they will not be looking to find Saint Paul, they will be looking to discredit the claim. And with their secularist, anti-religion filters they will find what they are looking for, inspite of the facts, just as with the Shroud of Turin. Decades after a majority of the ‘scientists’ declared the Shroud to be no more than 800 years old, a number of the scientists involved now claim that important things were overlooked and burried during the “scientific” investigation, and that their own findings concluded decisively that the Shroud could indeed be 2,000 years old. There are many top scientists who are men of deep Christian faith, it should be only those men who do the investigation, because as Christians they will be far more inclined to honesty than the atheists who believe they have no one to answer to but themeselves. Or the anti-Christians who have anti-Christian agendas.

Probably because of the way it's constructed and permanently sealed, opening it would damage it. If it's anything like Peter's casket, that would be a crime in itself to intentionaly ruin such a masterpiece stone work, just to satify someones curiosity. We already know what's in it anyways, the same thing every Pope has been buried with since.

Anyone going to Rome should sign upo for the Scavi tour. Under the altar of the basilica and look into the area where the church claims St. Peter's bones are buried.

Sign-up well in advance. Only 20 people per day.

It’s a grave; dirt, wood fragments and lumps of calcium carbonate.

Here's an interesting article on these tombs and contents, and why they aren't so easy to just open.
