A recent government study found that leading “comprehensive” sex education curricula intended to reduce teen sex, pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases contain sexually explicit material and factual errors.
The study was conducted by the Department of Health and Human Services, Administration for Children and Families (ACF) at the request of Senator Tom Coburn (R-Oklahoma) and former Senator Rick Santorum (R-Pennsylvania). The request came after the “Waxman Report,” written in 2004 by the staff of Rep. Henry Waxman (D-California), claimed abstinence curricula are deficient. That report was criticized for its own inaccuracies, and for failing to evaluate comprehensive sex ed curriculum.
The ACF study addresses four main questions: 1. Does the content of the comprehensive sex education curricula mirror the stated purposes? 2. What is the content of comprehensive sex education curricula? 3. Do comprehensive sex education curricula contain medically inaccurate statements? 4. Do evaluations of these curricula show them to be effective at (a) delaying sexual debut and (b) reducing sex without condoms?
What the study found will shock many parents and legislators. The leading comprehensive sex ed curricula discourage the most effective way to reduce teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases (delaying sex until, and restricting it to, marriage) by explicitly describing various sexual activities, encouraging role playing of sexual acts in the classroom and field trips to buy condoms, and downplaying the risks of pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases with contraceptive use.
The “comprehensive” or “abstinence plus” programs promote increased contraceptive use among teens, emphasizing condom use and how to incorporate it into a sexual encounter. Abstinence is grossly underrepresented. The study reports, “Of the curricula reviewed, the curriculum with the most balanced discussion of abstinence and safer-sex still discussed condoms and contraception nearly seven times more than abstinence. Three of the nine curricula reviewed did not even have a stated purpose of promoting abstinence.”
The content of these “comprehensive” programs may lead you to think you have read eroticized phrases from the latest Cosmopolitan magazine. But these are, in fact, taken straight out of curricula from “comprehensive” sex education programs being taught to children as young as 10 years old.
One curriculum directs the teacher to say:
“Think up a sexual fantasy using condoms” and “use condoms as a method of foreplay….act sexy/sensual when putting condoms on, hide them on your body and ask your partner to find it…tease each other manually while putting the condom on.”
“Don’t worry if you are in a fix and need lubricant for a condom immediately, just use ‘grocery store lubricants…grape jelly, maple syrup, and honey’ instead.”
In addition to learning how to make “safe sex” interesting, students are also instructed on ways to “be close to a person without having sexual intercourse…The list may include body massage, bathing together…reading erotic books and magazines…”

The ACF study also found medical and factual errors in the curriculum. Some curricula inadequately addressed the failure rates of condoms. The erroneous information relays to students a false sense of security in the protective power of condoms against sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and pregnancy. These “comprehensive” programs severely weaken what little abstinence message may be given by giving incorrect information, by approaching sexuality outside of a value system and by assuming that youth will engage in sexual behavior despite the risks.
Ironically, although abstinence-only programs have seen significant success and give more accurate information on condom use and the emotional effects of early sexual activity, the government spends only $1 on abstinence programs for every $12 spent on comprehensive sex ed and contraceptives. This despite the fact that surveys show that 78 percent of parents want their children taught abstinence.
The small amount of federal funding currently set aside for abstinence-only programs may be eliminated. One particular channel of funding for abstinence programs, included in Title V, is set to expire on June 30, 2007 if it is not re-authorized by Representative John Dingell (D-Michigan), Chairman of the House Energy and Commerce Committee. Dingell plans on simply allowing the bill to expire or making amendments that gut funding for abstinence education. The money would most likely be re-directed to comprehensive sex ed programs.
Take Action: Concerned Women for America’s (CWA) members should contact Rep. Dingell at 202-225-4071 to encourage him to reauthorize Title V before the June 30th deadline.

And as a side note, is that really medically sound? I mean that stuff contains a lot of sugar, which can stimulate bacteria growth. I’m not a doctor or anything, and I didn’t stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night...so I don’t know. Maybe there’s a biologist, nurse, or doctor on here that could enlighten us.
The biggest argument I hear from parents who send their kids to the local ISD....is they can't afford to home school or use private education. The truth is.....most don't want to hinder their lifestyle choices.

In certain places, the VD training during the Vietnam War included “information” about an STD called “Ho Chi Minh’s Revenge,” and, according to the instructor, it was so nasty, incurable and contageous that if you were diagnosed with it, you’d get sent to a remote island whose location was classified and your family would be informed that you were either MIA or dead. It may have been total BS, but it sure scared the bejeebers out of most of the young guys who attended the training sessions!

My son will be in 4th grade this year and my husband and I just had a discussion about when to begin sex ed with him. I believe this is when I was first introduced to it in school. However, since we homeschool, we decided that his lack of interest in my pregnancy (how the baby got in there, etc.) shows that he is not ready for it! He is satisfied with the baby being God’s gift to a married couple so I’ll hold off for a few more years!

The only lubricant I've bought from a grocery store was motor oil. Yes, motor oil. But never mind that. A lubricant is slippery, not sticky.
So why grape jelly, maple syrup, and honey rather than say, vegetable oil?
The teacher is either ignorant almost beyond belief. (Never made a PB&J and ended up with sticky jelly on hands. PB&honey is equally as good, and sticky. Versus spreading Crisco on an oven pan so the baked food will slide right out.) Or, sweet flavored foodstuff is more appealing to the mouth than cooking oil. Oil is relevant to condom use, the other three aren't.

OK I can be realistic. They better be thinking at least 16 year old kids. I think that people should have to get a license to have sex. OK just kidding, but it should be something that you wait to have. Plus the sentence that saying that Santorum is against sex is really funny considering he has six kids so he has had sex at least six times. Salon is a hoot.

I am shocked that they are teaching children as young as 10 such things. Condiments as lubricants? Yuck! Those other types of intimacy are nothing but foreplay that will lead to the kids having sex. It’s really a shame that the funding for abstinence will inevitably be cut. Children need to be learning about reading, english, history, science, and math. They don’t need to be learning foreplay and ways to have sex. Sadly, libs don’t care about the results of this. Their goal is to have people of all ages having sex with a variety of partners regardless of sex.
I was reading about culural marxism, socialism, and communism. All this valueless sex continues to breakdown the nuclear family. The nuclear family is a main or the main component in a thriving democracy which stands opposed to cultural marxism, socialism, and communism. Sadly, the leftists are destroying the family saturating our society with sex at every turn in schools, the media, and graphic pornography.

Guys like him who are constantly letting their mouths overload their butts are quick to sing a different tune when it IS their own butts - and not somebody else’s - that are actually on the line.
There was a time when people who were diagnosed with syphilis had to give the names of all their sexual contacts to the local health authorities with a view to preventing the spread of the disease. In fact, here in Massachusetts, blood tests were once required as a condition of being granted a marriage license.
The most apalling thing about the current political correctness with regard to certain STD’s is that today’s dangerous STD’s like AIDS may also be partially responsible for increased instances of diseases like antibiotic-resistant TB since people with compromised immune systems are far more vulnerable to diseases like TB, Hepatitis, etc. than they normally might be otherwise. Once they get these diseases, they can pass them along to the population at large.
Come to think of it, when “gay marriage” was imposed on the state of Massachusetts by our unelected State Supreme Court, I don’t recall hearing anything about blood tests being required as a condition for obtaining a marriage license....... This is because our state lawmakers repealed the law requiring such blood tests in late 2004...AFTER gay marriage was imposed on May 17, 2004. Interesting, wouldn’t you say?
