The Senate's three Democratic presidential hopefuls Hillary Rodham Clinton, Chris Dodd, Joe Biden and Barack Obama voted to advance the bill. Among Republicans, John McCain voted to keep the measure alive and Sam Brownback did likewise before changing his vote after defeat was obvious. "Immigration is going to have to wait until we get a new president and a new Congress," Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid said after a 46-53 procedural vote Thursday derailed efforts to move the bill toward final passage. The House also is almost certain to dodge the issue, with leaders of both parties hoping to spare members the fractious debate that dragged on almost three weeks in the Senate. Supporters of the Senate bill had indicated they were close to the 60 votes needed to end debate, but the forces of the political right and left overwhelmed an effort to address one of the most difficult issues facing the country. "Legal immigration is one of the top concerns of the American people and Congress' failure to act on it is a disappointment," said President Bush, who has pushed a comprehensive reworking of immigration laws since he came to Washington. Proponents said the Senate had succumbed to the angry voices of hate, venom and racism. Sen. Edward Kennedy, D-Mass., one of the bill's architects, compared the fight with the Senate's long struggle for civil-rights legislation against segregationist opponents. "You cannot stop the march for progress in the United States," he declared. To that, Sen. David Vitter, R-La., among the bill's most aggressive foes, snapped: "To suggest this was about racism is the height of ugliness and arrogance."

Build the fence. Then we’ll talk.
We must spread the word loud and clear in 08 which senators voted for amnesty. This is going to be war.
"You cannot stop the march for progress in the United States," he declared.
To that, Sen. David Vitter, R-La., among the bill's most aggressive foes, snapped: "To suggest this was about racism is the height of ugliness and arrogance."
Ted Kennedy himself, is the height of ugliness and arrogance in the Congress
I’m hearing the House sent some fairly clear signals that it didn’t stand a chance there.
So alot of the senators, hearing their phones ringin off the hook, decided to not commit political self-immolation by voting aye.
Typical liberal response...you don’t like my bill so you are a racist and I’m taking my marbles and go home...no attempt to begin from scratch to see what is in the best interests of the country instead of attempting to ram something unpalatable down the throat of 80% of the electorate.

An interesting comment within this post is as follows: "Supporters of the Senate bill had indicated they were close to the 60 votes needed to end debate, but the forces of the political right and left overwhelmed an effort to address one of the most difficult issues facing the country."
This is the first reference by the MSM to the political left also being active in this bills defeat. Poll numbers (as well as yesterday's vote tally) indicated it had to be so, but no one has admitted such...until now.
When Ted Kennedy speaks, America is undermined just a little more
If this is such a critical issue, why not have hearings and try to build a consensus?
Isn’t that how the legislative process is supposed to work in the civics books?
This business of power brokers making a Grand Bargain in secret and presenting a law as a fait accompli (we’ll tell you about it, you don’t need to read it) is bull——.
And this is how I feel about what any of them say. It is a beautiful day. Enjoy.

I am going to say again what I wrote my Senator today:
These people are termed illegals for a reason. It is because they broke laws already in existence regarding their presence here. Ergo, new laws are not needed as the existing ones are simply not being enforced. Enforce them and the problem does not exist.
Beautiful! But, I waited in vain for the Voinovich kite to crash & burn. :)
I have been watching the Senate floor today. It is a crying jag that is going on and we were just a bunch of loud mouths that are very small in number. They all need to STFU but in the meantime I love watching them cry.
It DOES NOT have to wait. We have sufficient laws on the books to deal with illegals entering this country. Find them and ship them back! It’s not rocket science!
Yada, yada. They're a bunch of prima donnas who can't face reality. They'll continue to make excuses, blindly insulating themselves from reality...hopefully,all the way to defeat in their next election.
The Dem party's black constituency was likely to be unhappy at the prospect of another minority group that would compete with them for affirmative action goodies
I watched the Dem debate last night and was intrigued and scared to death. Most answers/solutions were new programs, new programs and more new programs to level the playing field to make it easier for blacks to succeed. Spread the wealth.
This on the very day they voted to make it more difficult by casting their vote to let in unlimited illegals. I am so amazed people cannot see their transparency.
This is all so damn laughlable but it scares the hell out of me if one of them should get elected.
I want to see the Republicans taking responsibility for this bill failing—standing right up to it and explaining the reasons why. They need not run. Then I want them to start presenting bill after bill regarding enforcement. This could help them put the party back together.
Very well stated. Since the House Republicans were able to show leadership in opposition to the Senate bill (through a vote of 114-23 in a non-binding statement), this may be our first best hope of getting something accomplished.
I know my Congressman, Don Manzullo (R) IL, was opposed to this legislation. Why not take this issue to our Representatives in the House, and let them begin the process? After all, they're the ones who are really supposed to represent the American public.
I'm pinging the rest of the list on this, because I think it's a good call to action.
I believe it goes beyond that. Labor (rank & file) had to be dead set against it. And regardless of political leaning, every-day Americans had to see the costs we've been incurring in the medical, educational and law-enforcement communities; not to mention the cost to government of all that un-taxed revenue and monies going out-of-country.

Will our security have to wait too?
Probably failed to act on it because they were too busy dealing with illegal immigration...
Demand a border fence! Build it NOW!! Beef up the border patrol and close our borders!
