I can relate. I’ve been trying to find some dishes for everyday use. It seemed that everywhere I went, when I found something I liked, I would turn the plate over and see “made in China.” No way would I take a chance with that — I’ve read lately that, even though it is against US laws, many dishware coming in from China has been found to contain lead and cadmium in the glaze/paint used to decorate the dishes.
I finally discovered that the company that makes a great deal of the plates used in restaurants — which have to hold up to a lot of abuse — are made by Homer Laughlin Co — which is here in the good old USA. They also make Fiestaware for the consumer retail market. It’s extremely durable, and unlike the stuff coming in from China, which is only dishwasher/microwave safe, it is also oven & freezer safe. I found a great price online that was very similar to the “cheap” price of the chinese stuff. I also trust them when they promise it to be lead and cadmium free.
Sometimes it takes a little bit of work and a little extra money, but alternatives to Chinese goods can be found in a lot of cases.
“Mage in Japan” used to mean something was cheap...
didn’t mean it was deadly!

Sorry ... I don't know if I understand the point of your post. Because of the subject of this discussion, your lack of explanation leaves me with two (quite differnt) reasons for posting this as a response to my own statement.
Were you trying to show me their website (of which I'm already quite aware), or were you assuming that just because the word "china" was in their company name, that their products were actually made in China, and you were trying to warn me of that?
Just in case you are trying to tell me that because the word "china" is associated with their company means that they produce their dishware in that country, well, let me assure you that is not the case. The word "china" is in their company name because they make dishes, which are sometimes identified as "china." -- it isn't because the product is actually made in a country of the same name. 100% of their production is in West Virginia.
From the bottom of their home page: The Homer Laughlin China. Co. 672 Fiesta Drive Newell, WV 26050 Phone: 800-452-4462 Fax: 304-387-0593 General Info: hlc@hlchina.com Made in the USA since 1871 Lead Free
HERE is a virtual tour that describes how they make their tableware in West Virginia.
But, then, I'm sure you are already aware that there is more than one definition for the word "china," so I'll just assume that you were probably just trying to be helpful and show me, and other readers, their website. Thanks!
You posted their name, I supplied the link.
Could you post a link to where you bought it, if you haven’t already? And ping me if it’s not too much trouble? We’ve been eating out of stainless steel bowls and drinking out of mason jars for about two months now after we saw all our dishes and cups said “China” on the bottom.
Ignore my comment above. Duh.
You have freepmail.
If anyone else wants to know where I found the best price, just send me a freepmail. Their service was great, too.
