WASHINGTON, (AP) -- For years he was known as chief of staff to Vice President Dick Cheney and assistant to President Bush. On Wednesday, I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby became federal inmate No. 28301-016.

Libby, who was convicted in March of lying and obstructing an investigation into the leak of a CIA operative's identity, faces 2 1/2 years in prison.

Now, all Pres. Bush has to do is commute the sentence to time served.

Unfortunately, he can’t/won’t do that until after the election next year. But he’ll surely do it after that.

So, Mr President, where’s that pardon for your Vice President’s loyal former staff member?

This is disgusting. We have millions of invaders to this country who steal identities, make fake IDs, over fill our schools, overwhelm our ERs (and we REWARD them) and yet a citizen of this country goes to jail for something this stupid.

Amazing.

When confronted by prosecutors and FBI agents, however, Libby lied about how he learned about Plame and whom he told, a jury found.

An important lesson, never tell under oath what you think you recall, without adding the qualifier, 'to the best of my knowledge at this time' or 'unless my memory fails me, this is what I recall'. Or you can just say 'I'm sorry, I cannot remember and I do not want to lie, so I cannot answer you'. Then they can never get to you later for supposedly lying.

Bush wanted amnesty for the false document illegals. He won’t give amnesty for one of his own people who was railroaded in a political prosecution.

He won’t do it.

This President seems to be able to do nothing right. He should take a page out of the book of Costanza and do the exact opposite of everything his instinct tells him to do.

He would probably see a bump in the approval ratings.

Republicans should never, ever say anything under oathe anymore. Plead the 5th, let the chips fall where they may. America may not be better served doing so, but at least you don’t incriminate yourself.

I have always wondered why a lawyer of Libby's caliber didn't know that or get that advice.

Remember Oliver North's boffo performance before the committee? He had his notebook right in front of him so he could make sure everything he testified to was correct and had written backup, but, of course, grand jury witnesses almost never have that option.

Oh, he does a few things right.

He stood up for our troops just a couple of weeks ago against the Dem and media onslaught.

Short-sightedness makes people forget quickly.

How? By throwing General Pace under the bus to appease Carl Levin, John McCain, and John Warner?

From the article: “Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald opposes Libby’s bid to delay his prison term. He says Libby does not have a good chance of having his conviction overturned and should begin serving prison time immediately.”

Bravo Sierra - this judge made so many decision prejudicial to the defense, and so many times said “Even though this may be overturned on appeal” the chances of a new trial being ordered are, IMHO, excellent.

I guess you didn't hear of his work to get the troop funding bill passed. He was extremely vocal about the fact that he would veto any attempt to draw down or cut short the troops' commitment.

It's because of the President that the battle in Baghdad is being fought now as we speak.

Sad to see it happen, but I sure hope he'll be out in less time than he's been sentenced.

I'm sure he'll make lots of new pals in prison, seeing as how he served on the DC Court of Appeals and the Supreme Court of PA. Libby probably won't get a moment's rest with all of the constant requests for legal advice he'll be getting in the joint. He might even make friends that none of his current detractors would ever want to run across out on a lonely open road.

Ah well. A year plus of hitting the weight pile oughtta give him more years on his life.

Totally agree. I have never heard of no right for stay pending appeal in a criminal case. Of course you apply to trial court first, and maybe expect them to say no, but the Court of Appeals should grant stay. After all they may take a couple of years to rule on the merits of appeal and by then an “innocent” person could serve very hard time.

Oliver North and Adm. Poindexter did not have to report to jail and their bogus convictions were overturned on appeal and they justifiably walked free. No one should be jailed unless and until their appeals run our unless they are a clear danger to the public or are committed in lieu of bond.

GWB has indicated that he is not able to pardon the man until the legal process is thru. He can pardon him then if need be.

He belleves that Libby is innocent and hopes the Appeal Court will see it that way. Or Libby can stop the appeal process at anytime then GWB can pardon him. But Libby wants to clear his name. The pardon won’t do that.

Has George Bush been assigned a failed Presidency number yet? They just need to use the number after Jimmy Carter’s. Bush is in real danger of becoming the Republican version of Jimmeh. The only major difference is a good economy under Bush.

Let’s see, 2 Boarder agents are railroaded and sent to prison for over a decade for shooting at a drug smuggler, another one spent two years in prison for “pushing” and illegal, and a third was sentenced to a year in prison for shooting at a car full of illegals that tried to run him over. Then, we have Marines sitting in the brig at Camp Pendleton facing life in prison because of the word of a known terrorist imformer who lied about Haditha, a Lt. Colonel in the Army had to resign or face court martial for “scaring” a terrorist into telling where a roadside bomb was located and, you call “me” disgusting?
