WASHINGTON Sen. George Voinovich, R-Ohio, misunderstood the results of a vote on an amendment to the "comprehensive immigration reform" bill being debated in the upper house today.
He also is apparently unfamiliar with efforts to re-impose the Fairness Doctrine on broadcasters operating on the public airwaves.
But it was nationally syndicated radio talk-show host Sean Hannity's persistent grilling about the senator's intentions on key cloture votes leading to a showdown on what is characterized as an "amnesty" bill that caused Voinovich to melt down before millions of listeners today.
The normally low-profile Republican hung up on the No. 2 talk host in the country.
The key sticking point in the conversation was Hannity's question as to whether the senator had done a cost analysis on the bill. The Heritage Foundation, a conservative think-tank, estimates the bill would cost the American taxpayers $2.5 trillion.
Voinovich said he didn't believe the cost would be that high because a third of those eligible for a path to citizenship would never take it.
"How do you know that?" Hannity asked. "Where does that figure come from?"
Voinovich did not provide any supporting evidence for his contention and admitted he had read neither the bill itself or the Heritage Foundation analysis.
The senator complained that some of his constituents have attempted to "intimidate" him by saying they would oppose his re-election if he voted for the bill.
"You do not intimidate George Voinovich," he said. "During my 40 years in this business, I have always looked at the pros and cons of each piece of legislation and made a determination. If people don't like my decision, they can express their will during the next election."

What a total ass. George Voinovich, I am going to intimidate you.
What a little turd. He needs to remember who he works for.
Geogre Voinovich is living proof that a person doesn`t have to be smart to be a Senator. When is he up for re-election?
The arrogance of the “safe seat.”
That says it all right there. Take a step back to reality sir, you have been in Washington too long.
If a Sean Hannity interview is too much for a guy, he should just hang it up.
At this rate of self destruction the Republican’s are doomed come ‘08.
2011
Would someone stand up and champion this cause?
Anyone?
I'm calling Tom Coburn...again!!
WOW. Really, what more can you say? These are the people representing us?
>>”He doesn’t even know what the Fairness Doctrine is,” exclaimed Hannity. “He doesn’t even know the outcome of a vote in the Senate today. And he gets mad at me when I try to explain it to him!” <<
So this turkey didn’t know that the amendment requiring illegals to return to their country of origin failed?
He never read the bill being discussed and became defensive about those who disagreed with his stance on it.
He never read the cost-benefit analysis put out by the Heritage Foundation, but....
He thinks the Heritage Foundation underestimated expenses because he thinks that only 1/3 of those offered citizenship will take it. (I guess he doesn’t care if they continue to guzzle resources, fill our ERs, commit crimes disproportionate to their population, fill our schools with their largely illiterate, Spanish-speaking kids, and all the while send capital out of the US and into Mexico?
This man is a total boob. I can do better than this, and I’m working 80-hour weeks!!
hotair.com has the audio (i didnt have much luck with the audio at wnd)
No, but we better get our butts in gear for the primaries. A lot of incumbent challengers can take the candidacy because of this. Screw the party leaders and their preferred lifetime appointments. I’ll start with my guy. Mel Martinez needs to be shown the door. He’s useless. Any republican who challenges for the seat will get my ear, my cash, and someone other than Martinez will get my vote.
Ohio, 2011, Voinovich.
Ohio Residents, Remember this.
Thank you. :-)
How about 2010.
Voinivich has been pretty useless since his arrival in DC.
When I read this, I thought, unbelievable that a U.S. Senator can be that ignorant. Then I thought about all the other dumb ass politicians and it's not so unbelievable.
It was done in CALIF....re: Gray Davis
I say start recall action on all those who are FOR illegal immigration.....
Voinovich probably was watching all the Paris Hilton coverage.
Voinovich sounds like Kucinich-Lite
Ping for later listening!
We don't care if you're intimidated. We just want you to GO HOME.
Having lived there the first three decades of my life I can only point out that they kept Glenn & Metzenbaum in office for years and re-elected Dick Celeste.
I listened to this today on the radio. What an ass this guy is.
If that doesn’t work, let’s recall them the old fashioned way. You bring the tar, I’ll pluck the birds.
Voinovich always has been and always will be a paper shuffler.
I suspect this is his last term because he will choose not to run.
Based on the current Republican in the Oval Office,I’d say Voinovich has the right intelligence to run for President !!!
I heard the replay and it was a real shame to see a grown man do that. You would think he would know the days of hiding behind the ruse if you only read the bill were over. Who would have thought that the Senators haven’t read the bill ... And I thought it was a Senator who was passing around that story.
George V. is one dim freakin' bulb.
Good point.
Isn’t Sen. George Voinovich the senator that teared up and voted aganst John Bolton for US embassador for the UN?
What will get these idiots our attention?
A mass defection from the GOP party?
An organized recall on every last one them?
What?
You and I both know....no one is going to sign on to a tar and feathering.....Although that's what they deserve. : )
I was serious too. If they pass this turd.
Ironically, V-bitch followed K'cinach(rhymes with spinach), as mayor of Cleveland. No wonder the city has been on lifesupport for all these years.
Listen to the audio.
I was shocked that Sean was that good. He was armed with facts and stuff today.
That’s why we have got to get rid of the worst ones in the primaries. No democrat will vote for these schlubs, and many conservatives are disgusted and plan to stay home. IMO the only way we can prevent that is by getting better candidates to win the primaries.
Remember Tip O’Neill? Even though Reagan had the presidency and the popular agenda, O’Neill never surrendered an inch. The executive and the legislative branches are abandoning we the people who put them there, and no one seems to be standing up, screaming, “These are the values that convinced them to vote for us!”
We must find some representatives that will shout out conservatism and never back down. This government and its leaders take us for granted. To hell with them.
A real contender for dumbest Senator.
Hehe! Thanks, I heard part of the interview in my car but didn’t know which Senator was doing the interview. It WAS a total meltdown! I thought he was going to hang up, then he told Hannity that he (Voinovich) was supposed to have at least five minutes to speak and Hannity had had more minutes than he and started laughing like a madman! Wasn’t Voinovich the Senator who started crying on the Senate floor a while back? HA! I’m getting his address and sending him a box of Puffs!
Good for Sean! I will check out the audio, thanks!
Congressman Billybob
But they won't get it....
I'm supporting Ham Sandwich for Senate.
Not that it has anything to do with the topic at hand, I just like to remind people of that fact.
That would be the guy. "Low profile" indeed.
Furthermore, Senator V. has like many been compromised. His handler or another prince has the goods on him. My guess is he has a page problem or worse. This fool is totally dependent and malleable to whatever agenda he is feed.
Yes, a blind chimpanzee would serve Ohio no worse.
Just say NO to Illegal Alien Amnesty!! Keep calling!! Its NOT OVER!!
