Mum Warner likely to move on (VA retirement alert)
The Washington Times ^ | June 26, 2007

Posted on 06/26/2007 5:06:45 PM PDT by Clintonfatigued

Virginia Sen. John W. Warner has said little about whether he will run for re-election, but the 80-year-old Republican is giving clear indications that he will not return for another term and that his coyness is merely an attempt to help Rep. Thomas M. Davis III, a fellow Republican, replace him.

"There has been considerable discussion about the possibility that [Mr. Warner] might delay an announcement of candidacy, then announce he wasn't going to run, to allow Congressman Tom Davis to build up at the beginning of the campaigns, which would give Davis an advantage," said Morton C. Blackwell, chairman of the Virginia's Republican National Committee and leader of the conservative Leadership Institute.

So what about Davis? Is he a conservative, or is he a RINO? If Mr. Elizabeth Taylor supports him, I’m skeptical already.

It occured to me that John Warner was doing exactly this.

Conservatives were hoping for someone more conservative than Warner, and Tom Davis doesn’t represent a major change.

He should have retired this morning, before the cloture vote.

If there is any good in this, it is that these traitorous scoundrels will be forever remembered for this vote, this vote alone, and everything else will pale in comparison.

Now leave the Capitol in disgrace, “Senator”

I agree. I also believe that, despite his having taken the war to the islamofascists, the same will be said of this president because of his support of this amnesty. I know for me personally, I have never been more disappointed in a politician in all my life.

What a loser.

Unfortunately, that is the truth. Davis is probably the only Republican who can win in northern Virginia.

Thanks for the info! Anyone is better than Warner IMO. If Davis can win, we need to get behind him because that seat is too important to let a Dem take it.

Indeed, the threat we face is perhaps more ethereal, more insidious than any we have encountered. I say that with the full knowledge of the awesome challenge presented to and defeated by our fathers and grandfathers in the World Wars. There we had a known target, now we have one far more elusive, and coached by their own doctrine to lie (without getting into a religious sidetrack).

George may have had the right idea taking the fight to them, but he has been hopelessly outclassed in the long-term ‘strategery’ of dealing with this new foe. Muddying the waters with this atrocious amnesty debacle, while failing to control borders during a time of threat sadly confirms this ineptitude.

I voted for him, I campaigned for him, but now it is time for him to get some help from people that know WTH they are doing, and put his pet projects aside. You see there is a country at stake here... ours.

You must have missed the fact that Mark Warner, who was going to run for President, has completely disappeared from the political landscape.

Something about him having an "intern problem".

Not likely he can replace John Warner now, and particularly since the Old Guard (circa 1865) has demonstrated with Webb that they can insert a neo-fascist into the Senate with impunity ("impunity" being the ultra-anti-semitic owner of the Washington Post).

Somebody else will have to do the job. This Davis guy is my Congress-critter. He's a little too RINO, but he can probably beat any Democrat (except another neo-fascist).

While true, I don't necessarily fault him for that. Who knew these crazies were so willing to die for such a lost cause? Where he does deserve condemnation is for not adjusting to the conflict once it was known. Sending our troops in to die on foot or in Hummers is foolhardy. It's like trying to find one flea at a time. Just bomb the hell out of them and kill them all where they hide.

More bombs/less bullets = less dead Americans.

Davis represents a move to the LEFT, as he is more Socially liberal than Warner. If Davis gets the nomination, we will lose this seat if Mark is the Dem nominee. Conservatives will either not vote or a 3rd party candidate will arise (and we all know what happened in 1994 when the RINOs refused to get on board with Col. North).

Nope, he's worse. Warner got a 64 from the ACU (81 lifetime), and Davis got a paltry 56 (just a few points away from outright liberal Republican), a 70 lifetime (but hasn't scored that in several years). We need to put up a real Conservative here, either Randy Forbes or even Jim Gilmore.

Tom Davis, to his credit, has tried to reach out to cosnervatives. They grudgingly supported his reelection bids, and appreciate his work with the NRCC during the 1990’s.

The big question is whether this will be enough to get their support for a U.S. Senate bid, which is a much bigger task.

I’m just sayin that Rick would have an uphill battle being the #1 target of the pro-abortion folks. Maybe in some states that would fly, doubt so in VA.

The ‘90s are a long time ago. Lindsey Graham still had integrity in those days, and Trent Lott still had a shred of dignity. Putting up Davis will go against everything we see as wrong with Congress today. Run him in Massachusetts, but not Virginia. I also heard Dick Obenshain’s daughter, Kate Obenshain Griffin, may run for the seat. That would be a nice tribute to send the daughter of the Conservative legend that would’ve been the Senator from VA rather than the horrid RINO John Warner 30 years ago. The only downside is that she didn’t have a lot of luck as Chair of the VA GOP recently (though it’s not entirely her doing).

The name Obenshain is gold to the Conservative grassroots in VA. But whether she is as well known as the other Republicans, debatable. She obviously isn’t as well known as Mark Warner (but then, neither are the other Republicans, save Jim Gilmore or George Allen). Of course, sometimes being a semi-unknown quantity can be a help.

2008 is going to be a tough year for Republican Senate candidates. There are 21 Republican seats up and only 12 Dim seats. The fact that the Virginia seat may be in play is part of the problem. I fully expect the Dims to gain Senate seats. The House is probably the only hope .

The ultimate nightmare: President Hildebeast and a Dim Senate and a Dim House.

I’ve never trusted John Warner since his 1976-1982 marriage to Liz Taylor...

Not that I would not hit on Liz... in the days when she was a major babe, but...

As Frank Sinatra told JFK about Judy Exner... when he said, “Yeah, Jack, she looks like Liz Taylor, but you don’t have to marry her to ^*%# her...”

BTW Natasha Henstridge went dark haired in her 2002 flick Power and Beauty playing Judy Exner and it was a really good little flick.

Of course... I may be biased toward Natasha a mite!

And, I guess to be completely 100 per cent honest... I would marry Natasha.

Once again, Bender... you have stolen my sweetheart.

Don't worry, Dr Z... I doubt Natasha will be buying rice anytime soon...

Virginia is rapidly becoming a blue state. A big reason is the effect that illegal immigrants have on the vote - and yes, they do vote, in significant numbers. Even the state politicians will admit it in private, but don’t want to stir the pot because the MSM will quickly label them racist.

Webb beat Allen by 9000 votes. Many more than that margin were illegals who were registered in voter drives that hispanic organizations and Democrats set up at hispanic festivals and outside mercados. Illegal? Yes. Easy? Yes. They just tell them to check the box on the form that affirms you are a US citizen and resident of the voting district.

I played dumb and tried to regiser myself. I asked the little old ladies from the League of Women Voters if I had to show some citizenship proof. Nope. I went through four of these tables and then had them call over the supervisor. Nope. “The county registrar will follow up” she said. I called them later - they don’t.

So, the Republicans will lose next year, because conservatives in northern Virginia are turned off by the weasles in the US and Commonwealth Senates, Republicans all, who are in lockstep with the corporations and developers and Chambers of Commerce who want that cheap labor.

One hundred and forty-two years after the Civil War, Virginia is returning to a Democrat slave state. They just use nicer words to describe it.

But in Great Falls and McLean the lawns are neat and the toilets are spotless.

In a statewide race, the best course of action is to go for someone who has a very strong base area....or, someone who has actually won a statewide race before. In this case, I’d say the best solution is Gilmore, I think he was fairly popular when he left office.

Though my personal opinion about Allen losing is that, at least to some people, he seemed to be jumping the gun, call it the John Edwards syndrome. When people in North Carolina began to think Edwards was using that seat as a stepping stone, his ratings went down. Now, I know there were other factors at work in VA, but this had to have had a tiny thing to do with it. I kind of wonder if this same factor will hurt Obama in 10. Never mind the recent electoral history of Illinois, the fact is, his victory had some conditions surrounding, but that’s a story for another day.

Gov’t really is a corrupting influence. If not Davis, then Randy Forbes would be our best bet. BTW, do you still think Mark Warner will ditch the Senate race in favor of another stint as Governor?
