Conservative leaders among House Republicans say that President Bush's upcoming showdown with them on immigration could threaten support for the Iraq war as well as for the president's other top policy goals.
"The White House should keep in mind that if they have a direct confrontation with House Republicans on [immigration], it could affect the vote on the Iraq appropriation in September," said Rep. Peter T. King, New York Republican. "It will not affect me. I intend to stand by the president. But I do think it is something they should keep in mind for other Republicans who are borderline."
Mr. King last week introduced legisla Mr. King last week introduced legislation that would focus on border security while eliminating many of the guest-worker and path-to-citizenship provisions in the Senate proposal, which he called an "amnesty bill."
Rep. Adam H. Putnam, Florida Republican, warned that a lackluster immigration bill could do "irreparable harm" to House Republican support for the president.
"If the president makes it clear he'll sign any immigration bill that gets to his desk, no matter what it looks like, then it certainly will do more harm than good," said Mr. Putnam, who as chairman of the House Republican Conference is the third-ranking House Republican.
Mr. Putnam said that a speech by Mr. Bush in Glynco, Ga., last month which the president's conservative base perceived as harsh criticism of its opposition to the immigration bill was a "major step backwards."

“Can anyone think of two POTUS who have squandered away a 90% approval rating in less time.”
To borrow a phrase from another Freeper, let’s learn the lesson: NO MORE BUSHES IN THE WHITE HOUSE - EVER!
Let’s see... you would throw away Iraq policy to get even for immigration policy?
I'll be honest. As we watch our homeland being overrun by millions entering illegally, creating every kind of problem imaginable, Iraq is a distant secondary issue.
It’s like he is on a mission to destroy the Republican party, so Republicans aren’t disliked enough because of the Iraq War? Hmm..Here is a little Amnesty proposal to keep them dancing...
The President is very close to being known as “Jorge” for a very long time, he is splitting the party with this bill that only 26% of “we the people” support, and Jorge just keeps on pushing for this Amnesty.

U.S. Constitution, Article 4 Section 4:
"The United States shall guarantee to every State in this Union a Republican Form of Government,
1. The act of invading; the act of encroaching upon the rights or possessions of another; encroachment; trespass.
I think part of the problem is that The President hasn't been "out in the community" like the rest of us, in a couple of decades. If only we could convince him to put on a disguise and walk past a gathering of day laborers outside a Home Depot with his daughters Barbara and Jenna. Just like other Dads taking their twenty-something daughters to the do-it-yourself store to help them with paint and things for their new apartment. Make sure its a warm day and the girls are wearing shorts and tank tops.
Then maybe he could tell us how many more of them he wants around.
If the President is willing to surrender to Mexico and the Globalists who want the North American Trade Union, then who cares about protecting the United States from Al Qeada? The United States wont exist anymore.
Why should our military fight a war for Mexico? We aren't Hessians.
Just say NO to Illegal Alien Amnesty!! Keep calling!! Its NOT OVER!!

The Clintons should be welcome in China and the Bushes should be welcome in Mexico. If we can’t deport 12 million - 20 million invaders maybe we can deport a few hunderd politicians who betrayed their homeland and oath of office.

...at which point I basically throw up my hands, say "what conservatives?", walk away and leave you to your fate, guys. Don't try me.
What’s the use? It’s apparent that future Republican presidents will also be controlled by liberaltarians or commies, because mindless voters won’t look at the records behind the rhetoric.
Unless our average ability to really be concerned and to learn increases, I see a no-vote on the way from knowledgeable Republicans in the near future.
Good post, TM. The Constitution doesn’t specify a MILITARY invasion, does it?
And if W were currently sporting a 99% approval rating would that affect the propriety of his immigration policy?
NO MORE LUDICROUS NONSEQUITORS - EVER!
W appeals to us in his Saturday radio address about the need for immigration reform. Try the laws on the books. If they don’t work, then correct them. But there’s no need to turn the country in to a 3rd world nation over a bunch of illegals.
LOL - “Stay out da Bushes”
It doesn’t look like Iraq policy is working either .
I find it amazing that the administration is focusing their energy and resources on Amnesty , while Iraq policy is going down the tubes . What gives ?
Unfortunately, the house republicans’ voices, like those of the electorate, appear to be falling on deaf ears. The President is going to push this issue as far as he can. What’s he got to lose? He can’t be elected again.
Yeah - let’s just have Carters!
Were Bush not so bull-headed, that wouldn't be the tradeoff from which we must choose. If it comes down to that, then I guess I'm in favor of saving my home country as opposed to getting Iraq straightened out.
Today they march, tomorrow we fight.
“To borrow a phrase from another Freeper, lets learn the lesson: NO MORE BUSHES IN THE WHITE HOUSE - EVER!”
I totally agree and no more Clintons. None of their children or relatives included.
What is odd is why is Bush throwing his Presidency down the toilet. I know the Clintons don’t care. The Presidency is just a tool to them and their backers; but Bush has really surprised me.
I think that when a sitting President will not listen to the voice of the people and continually goes out and pushes a proposal that would reward criminal behavior,Flood our social services, and create a voting block dedicated to reacquiring large areas of our country.Then as bitter as it seems I think the time has come for members of his party to approach him and suggest that they will introduce a motion for his impeachment on the basis of his not defending the security of the U.S. That by not securing our borders and enforcing our current laws the security of the nation is in dire peril.What good is it to fight them on foreign lands but let them in unfettered through our open borders.Maybe the thought of his own party impeaching him would shock him into action. Every politician needs to remember the preamble to the Constitution starts We the People Not We the elected few. I am a Republican but I am not an idiot I refuse to follow blindly what any politician proposes without thought and speaking out either in support or opposition. That is my right I served and fought in combat for this country and I refuse to surrender it to any politicians even ones from my own Party. President Bush has been a great leader and the majority of his programs have been outstanding but on immigration and amnesty he is crossing the line into that realm where the security of our nation outweighs allegiance to a party that is out of touch with the will of the People.
THEY MAY MARCH TODAY; BUT TOMORROW THEY GO HOME TO THEIR OWN COUNTRY.
“Lets see... you would throw away Iraq policy to get even for immigration policy?”
I think the point that the House GOP is trying to make is this... Bush’s amnesty plan is tearing apart the Republican party... making it harder to preserve a united front on other issues.
How many of our soldiers signed up to fight for Mexico? What exactly are they risking their lives to preserve if Bush signs our nation’s death warrant?
I don’t think it is wise to impeach him. First of all we have no guarantees that Cheney will not carry on and if he doesn’t Pelosi is standing in the wings. Can you imagine having that classless woman being President? She can’t find her way out of a paper bag; much less guide our country. Most every decision she has made that has been made public is outragelously stupid.
Face it, we have got a lot of anti-americans up there in power and please don’t blame it on the people. It has been designed this way. Maybe it took this wakeup call to unite Americans; but we can and will change this.
Good point, if we can’t deport 20 million, then we deport 100 of ‘em as a lesson to the others.
Not just tresspass, and invasion, Travis, but larceny. Grand larceny at that.
Don’t know all the US figures, but Parkland Hospital in Dallas, Tx. last year,(just one hospital) seventy-percent of all babies born there were to illegals. How many is seventy-percent?
It’s 11,200 ANCHOR BABIES-—amd all to the tune of 4,000 to 7,000 dollars each!!! Paid for by the taxpayers. Any wonder we can’t get any property tax relief here in Texas?
nor clintin’s either. If ole willy had done HIS job all those times the terrorists attacked us we might not be where we are today but..he had other pressing things on his mind.
You beat me to it, stupidty like that is why they are the minority party, I would not want to be a soldier for this congress, demorat or repub
Definitely no more kennedees.
No, no carters either. We need strength not weakness and carter is nothing but weak kneed. Always has been.
No, no carters either. We need strength not weakness and carter is nothing but weak kneed. Always has been.
Tricky Dick took 49 states and threw it all away real quick.
If we can't trust him with our National Security on his open borders whim, what makes you think we can trust him on Iraq??? War on Terror??? Surely you jest...
Just like other Dads taking their twenty-something daughters to the do-it-yourself store to help them with paint and things for their new apartment. Make sure its a warm day and the girls are wearing shorts and tank tops.
I don't believe George is that naive...I believe he knows exactly what the ramifications are and the situation is he has an agenda that in not in the best interest of the United States of America or it's citizens...
Stay out da Bushes
LOL! Agreed! One of the greatest silly lines EVER! Hubby and I say it all the time. We try to think of reasons to say it, like if we are walking down the street and someone’s hedge is overgrown, we warn each other “Stay out da bushes!”.
Indeed!
One upon a time it was called being tarred and feathered, and run out of town on a rail - cow catcher class.
Do they have cow catchers on 747's?
How about we agree on no more Bushes, no more Clintons. The country will be better off if both families just go away.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Add the Kannedy’s to that and you have a deal.
It's just too darn bad that they couldn't keep him in check < before > the RATS took over the Senate and the House. Bush has been the most liberal spending Republican President we've ever had, and he's still doing it.
Read my lips -- No new Bushes.
I guess I'm not up on the rules, but wouldn't the new president nominate a new VP? I mean Tip O'Neil (it was Tip wasn;t it?) didn't move into Ford's spot after Nixon resigned.
I think Nazi Pelosi only gets the spot if both the Pres and the VP are lost.
