WASHINGTON (AP) -- Senators pushing a new immigration policy appealed Sunday to wavering supporters ahead of renewed debate on securing the borders and dealing with 12 million undocumented immigrants.
A fragile compromise was pulled from the Senate in early June, then resurrected after bipartisan negotiations with the White House. The bill awaits a crucial test vote this week. With several senators distancing themselves from the proposal, the outcome was too close to call.
"We'll see if between the two parties we have 60 votes" needed to keep the bill moving toward a final vote, said Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif.
The measure would tighten borders, require workplace verification and create a guest worker program. It also would lay out a way by which the estimated 12 million people illegally in the U.S. could gain legal status and work toward citizenship.
President Bush long has advocated an immigration overhaul. On Saturday, he urged lawmakers to "summon the courage" to support what could be the last major legislative achievement of his presidency. "The status quo is unacceptable," he said in his weekly radio address.
But he faces dissension from fellow Republicans who demand better border security and oppose any policy that suggests amnesty for undocumented immigrants.

14% job approval is not low enough.
I want to get it down to within the margin of error.
Beating the proverbial dead horse. Contact your Senator and tell them to stop f**king around with our national security.
Just too delicious not to compliment you!!! I’m still chuckling . . . Penny
We have legislation that says we can build 854 miles of fence (wall) right now. Congress won't fund it.
We have laws that say we can hire more border security agents. Congress wont do it.
We have laws that say businesses can not hire illegals, but it is only enforced in token gestures.
Why should we expect them to fund and enforce any new law that Congress passes and the President signs?
"Pay no attention to attention to that man behind the curtain!"
I think that is probably closer to negative 14%.
Just say NO to Illegal Alien Amnesty!! Keep calling!! Its NOT OVER!!

Conservative leaders among House Republicans say that President Bush's upcoming showdown with them on immigration could threaten support for the Iraq war as well as for the president's other top policy goals.
"The White House should keep in mind that if they have a direct confrontation with House Republicans on [immigration], it could affect the vote on the Iraq appropriation in September," said Rep. Peter T. King, New York Republican. "It will not affect me. I intend to stand by the president. But I do think it is something they should keep in mind for other Republicans who are borderline."
Mr. King last week introduced legisla Mr. King last week introduced legislation that would focus on border security while eliminating many of the guest-worker and path-to-citizenship provisions in the Senate proposal, which he called an "amnesty bill."
Rep. Adam H. Putnam, Florida Republican, warned that a lackluster immigration bill could do "irreparable harm" to House Republican support for the president.
"If the president makes it clear he'll sign any immigration bill that gets to his desk, no matter what it looks like, then it certainly will do more harm than good," said Mr. Putnam, who as chairman of the House Republican Conference is the third-ranking House Republican.
Mr. Putnam said that a speech by Mr. Bush in Glynco, Ga., last month which the president's conservative base perceived as harsh criticism of its opposition to the immigration bill was a "major step backwards." ...
It certainly is, but amnesty is not the answer..

USA has been invaded by 12 million illegals! Help someone!
Elected officials help!
Note the author.
You mean the "status quo" created in part by the Executive Branch refusing to fix border security for 6 years after 9/11?
I have found that email addresses to senators and their aids are no longer working when they did previously. Guess they blocked me since I have been emailing almost every day! Either that or they just are not accepting any emails now. Anyone else having this happen?

According to http://thomas.loc.gov/ do a 'bill number' search "s. 1639". And when you are done, go back and do a search on "s. 1348"
Beck is right.
Hopefully it doesn't get that far and this stinker is killed in the Senate.
Agreed. Beck is right on with what he said per the situation. Won't post it, but completely agree.
(topic shift)
One of organizations opposing this amnesty has a complete list of Email addys for staff members of the senate/congress. I thought I put it in my "Favorite list" for websites, but can't find it now. Anyone else have it?
Coded cover for those cowards that will vote for cloture and then against the bill
Well, if this is an emergency and Congress can not come to terms, then fund and enforce the new laws. Wait and see how the current laws effect the situation. Make an assessment and repeal and/or make new law if necessary.
Amazing. W is still digging.

>>The new bill is S1639 .
Note the author.<<
The title is “Unaccompanied Alien Child Protection Act of 2007.”
I guess this announces how they are going to try to sell it? Is the word “comprehensive” losing its charisma to the extent that it does not belong in the title?
I think I saw some recent poll that 98% don’t want the bill. Makes me want to investigate why the Congress and Senate are so for this when no one else is?
Follow the money my friend.
Here is the proof:
So now even amnesty is “for the chilldruunnn.” Namecalling didn’t work, fearmongering didn’t work and empty promises didn’t work, so now they’ll try insipid appeals to emotionality.
“It certainly is, but amnesty is not the answer..”
What is the answer and how much is it going to cost?
I haven’t heard any congresscritter tell me that yet.
you will see:

Why, President Bush, I'm surprised at you. I've always thought you were a straight shooter. Tell it like it is. No foolin' around. Etc.
Maybe you'd like to think for awhile about what you said and maybe modify it a little? Maybe something like,
"Due to my administration's willful neglect at enforcing laws that are already on the books, we have a real immigration mess. Clearly, the status quo is unacceptable. You have my solemn promise that my administration is turning over a new leaf with regard to illegal immigration."We will aggressively enforce existing laws while seeking new laws that increase employer penalties for hiring illegal aliens. We'll find and deport illegal aliens in our jails and prisons. We'll built the promised fence.
"And, finally, I am immediately issuing a full pardon for Border Patrol Agents Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean."
