Feds deny protests affected immigration arrests

HOMESTEAD, Fla. - Neighbors of Elvira Carvajal sought refuge in her house so immigration agents wouldn’t arrest them. Friends of Herman Martinez asked him to bring them milk for their children because they were afraid to step onto the streets.

In the weeks leading up to the huge pro-immigrant rallies in the spring of 2006, rumors swirled that authorities were on the streets rounding up illegal immigrants across the country. Fear of being caught and deported kept many illegal immigrants, and some legal ones, in their homes.

Non-worksite arrests did indeed jump in the first half of 2006, up 75 percent over the previous year, according to Homeland Security data released to The Associated Press.

If the borders had been managed for 10-20 years and criminal employers prosecuted as they should have been, we wouldn't have this epidemic.

And it's flat-out wrong to surrender to it via shamnesty.

This is a hell of a story. Thanks for posting. Let's see now, they are here illegally -- they protest by the thousands in the streets -- the feds crack down and arrest them. And they are surprised and chagrined? What did they expect?

"Last year’s demonstrations began in response to legislation that would have redefined illegal immigrants as criminals.

"In late March 2006, tens of thousands students walked out of classes. More than 500,000 people took to the streets in Los Angeles alone. On April 1, thousands formed a mile-long line across New York City’s Brooklyn Bridge. And despite the rumors of arrests, on May 1 more than a million people demonstrated nationwide.

An YouTube still has the video if anyone is interested. I just don't understand why some of them weren't arrested at the demonstrations, especially the ones carrying signs that said I'm illegal and I'm proud.

The huge numbers at protests by many, if not likely most, being illegal immigrants is a complete embarrassment and a tell-tale sign of Chertoff’s incompetence.

Chertoff, you’re doing a heckuva job ... [/s]

It’s a shame it had to reach this point. If you were ordered not to do your job, quit and confess.

Plus, who ever was urging them to demonstrate didn’t do them any favors. It was just too much in-your-face for many people who might otherwise have been likely to sympathize with them, or tolerate their presence as long as they kept quiet. I think they overplayed their hand. Time will tell.

I think they overplayed their hand.

That's a very astute observation.

It was for me. Hey we're stealing jobs and skipping out on taxes!!! Well, none of the rest of us get a pass on taxes and the contributions to SocSec, fed unemployment, state unemployment, etc. But they already bypassed laws so they thought why not make even more waves? The criminal employers have to be dragged out into the streets like in Portland.

If you are not here legally, then you will be arrested and deported. What is there not to understand here? This isn’t a story.

The shamnesty bill proponents in D.C. and criminal employers want YOU to feel guilty for not supporting their RICO criminal activity.

“Friends of Herman Martinez asked him to bring them milk for their children because they were afraid to step onto the streets.”

I like how they always manage to insert a tug at heartstrings referance to children in the stories. Guess what. It ain’t working. I was telling a neighbor of mine the other day that I believe in the near future here in the SW the issue is going to lead to big time bloodshed before it is over.
